PHILOSOPHY OF PUBLIC TRANSPORT
●
The history section traces a progression from pre-industrial communities where most
trips were made on foot to present urban regions marked by dominance of the private
automobile with consequent decline in public transit and increased congestion.
●
Need of mobility in large metropolitan areas cannot be resolved by automobiles
because of the space and environmental problems.
●
There is also a need for energy conservation.
●
Today's cities need good public transit which is ensured by integrating transport and
town planning, by assuring that transit can share roadways with private transport
until a point is reached where new infrastructure must be developed for transit;
●
by organizing finance to produce sufficient resources for operation and investment;
and by achieving proper organization for transit and coordinating it with all other
phases of urban planning.

Understanding the scientific principles of:
●
design, development and operational evaluation of total
systems for:
●
the physical movement of people, materials and
information,
including general network design and planning, site
evaluation, transportation management systems, needs
projections and analysis, and analysis of costs.

Strategic Problems
●
market and trade selection,
●
ship design,
●
network and transportation system design (including the
determination of transshipment points for intermodal services),
●
fleet size and mix decisions (type, size, and number of
vessels), and
●
port/terminal location, size, and design.

Tactical Problems
●
adjustments to fleet size and mix,
●
fleet deployment (assignment of specific vessels to trade routes), • ship routing and
scheduling,
●
inventory ship routing,
●
berth scheduling,
●
crane scheduling,
●
container yard management,
●
container stowage planning,
●
ship management, and
●
distribution of empty containers.

Operational Problems
●
cruising speed selection,
●
ship loading, and
●
environmental routing.
