Issues in Remedial Education in Malaysia

Remedial education also known as developmental education, basic skills

education, compensatory education, preparatory education, and academic upgrading
is assigned to assist students in order to achieve expected competencies in core
academic skills such as literacy and numeracy

Whereas special education is designed specifically for students with special needs,

education can be designed for any students, with or without special needs the
defining trait is simply that they have reached a point of lack of preparedness,
regardless of why. For example, even people of high intelligence can be under-
prepared if their education was disrupted, for example, by internal
displacement during civil disorder or a war.

Remedial education in our country started in the sixties in 1965 when there
were 3 teachers who received training in England returned to serve in Malaysia. Until
1968, a total of 9 teachers received training abroad. Therefore, the rehabilitation
education program in Malaysia has started as a 'Pilot Project' in 9 primary schools
throughout Malaysia. This project began in early 1967 and ended in 1970. A study
conducted on these primary schools has concluded that the Rehabilitation Education
Program is very necessary to help children with learning difficulties.

There are 7 Remedial Education Programs in Malaysia, namely Special

Remedial Education Program, KBSR Classroom Remedial Education Program,
Literacy and Numeracy Program (LINUS), Orang Asli Special Remedial Education
Program (PKMOA), 3M Programe (PROTIM), 3M Mastery Determination Instrument
(IPP3M) ), and 2M Early Intervention Class (KIA2M
The field of education is now progressing in line with the progress of our
country. However, there are still a handful of students with serious reading problems
such as dyslexic students, remedial students and students with special needs. To
address the problem, there are various methods of teaching reading have been
identified to be able to address the problem. Among the methods that can be used
are the Multy Sensor Reading Method, sight and pronunciation, alphabet and
phonetics.
A multisensory learning approach is a term many schools use to describe
teaching methods that involve engaging more than one sense at a time. Involving the
use of visual, auditory and kinesthetic-tactile pathways, a multisensory approach can
enhance memory and ability to learn. This can also include taste, smell, touch, sight,
hearing and movement. The students are able to experience a lesson through
multiple pathways that can best stimulate their brains and engage them more deeply
in the subject matter. There is a long history in the educational literature dating back
to Montessori, John Dewey and Grace Fernald, just to name a few.

All children benefit from exposure to multisensory lessons; including those

who may not have any difficulties with learning or paying attention. Whether general
education or special education, if a student has the opportunity to learn something
using more than one sense, the information is more likely to make a memorable
impact and be internalized.
However, multisensory learning can be particularly helpful for students with
learning disabilities and cognitive limitations who may have difficulty in one or more
areas of education. For example, a differently-abled student may have trouble
processing visual information. This can make it challenging for them to learn and
retain information through only reading and visual stimuli. Using other senses, such
as tactile or auditory, these children can make a stronger connection with what
they’re learning.

In conclusion, remedial education is a matter that plays an important role in

education in our country where children who have problems in learning are given
interventions so that the problems identified can be corrected at an early stage. This
is because, children who are early identified with the problem and given the right
intervention can then become illiterate citizens.
