LEADING EDGE – LE
The level of expertise required for significant development of the Skill Area. This skill level appl
ies to a small minority of positions and individuals – normally no more than 10 to 15 positions pe r
Skill Area throughout Unilever. Typically:
1. creates major innovation or new best practice in the Skill Area;
2. creates Unilever best practice in the Skill Area;
3. acts as a Unilever reference point for the Skill Area.

FULLY OPERATIONAL – FO
The level of expertise required to perform personally the majority of the activities of the Skill Area.
Typically:
1. resolves problems and makes improvements in the Skill Area;
2. applies and adapts best practice in the Skill Area to local conditions;
3. acts as local reference point for the Skill Area.

WORKING KNOWLEDGE - WK
The level of expertise required for direct involvement in decisions and actions in the Skill Area.
Typically:
1. assesses and diagnoses issues in the Skill Area;
2. provides reasoned challenges to specialists in th e Skill Area;
3. supervises or directly works with practitioners of the Skill Area.

BASIC APPRECIATION – BA
