Mid-Semester Examination (MSE)
Odd Semester - 2020-21
Chemical Reaction Engineering - CB301
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Full Marks: 25 Time: 2 Hours Exam Slot: 3-6 PM Date: 01/10/2020

Notes: 1. Please write your name and roll number on your answer copy.
2. Please send scanned copy of your answer sheet copy by email to
sksamanta@iitp.ac.in or krsanju07@gmail.com and also whatsapp
at 7033582467 within scheduled finish time of exam (6 PM). Please
give a declaration citing your reason if you need extra time for
submission.
3. Make suitable assumptions if required & state the same.
4. Notations bear their usual meaning and significance.
5. This is an open book exam. You are permitted to see any teaching
contents, books, e-books or internet material. However, prewritten
material can't be added as answer copy. Any programmed calculation is
strictly not allowed. Detailed steps of solutions are very essential for any
numerical or mathematical problem (with suitable assumptions if required).
6. Answers should be brief and to the point.

Answer All Questions (Marks are indicated against each question)

1. For the reaction A + B à 2R; rR=kCBCA. Is this an elementary reaction? What is the molecularity
of the reaction? 2 Marks
2. Calculate the fractional volume change of B (εB) for the gas-phase reaction 2A + B à 4C with a
feed consisting of CA0 = 300, CB0 = 200 and CI0 (inerts) = 100. 2 Marks
3. What do you understand by the principle of microscopic reversibility. Give example. 2 Marks
4. Come up with (guess and then verify) a mechanism that is consistent with the experimentally
found rate equation for the following reaction:
2A + B à A2B with + rA2B =k[A][B] [4.5 Marks]
[P.T.O.]
5. Explain integral method of analysis of kinetic data for irreversible bimolecular second order reaction
with the following stoichiometry as well as rate equation:
A+2B -----> R+S; -rA = kCACB for (i) CB0 = 3CA0 and (ii) CB0 = 2CA0. [3+2 Marks]

6. The first-order reversible liquid reaction A ↔ R, CA0 = 2.0 mol/l, CR0 = 1.0 mol/l, takes place in
a batch reactor. After 5 minutes, conversion of A is 30% while the equilibrium conversion is 75%.
Find the rate equation for this reaction. [5 Marks]

7. For the following irreversible reactions in series, derive the maximum concentration of R and
the time at which it occurs for a batch reactor and also mention all the assumptions.
