Form 4
Optics
1. (a) (i) What is refraction (1 mark)
(ii) State Snell’s Law of refraction. (2 marks)
In an experiment to verify this law, the angles of incidence, i, and corresponding angles of refraction, r,
were measured for light moving from air into a glass block and recorded in a table as shown below.

i/° 20 30 40 50 60 80
r/° 13 19 25 30 35 41
sin i 0.34 0.75
sin r 0.22 0.50
(iii) Copy and complete the table. (2 marks)
(iv) Plot a graph of sin i (y-axis) against sin r (x-axis) (5 marks)
(v) Determine the slope of your graph (2 marks)
(vi) State the significance of the slope (1 mark)
(b) A ray of light is incident normally on the surface AB of a 45°- 90°-45° glass prism as shown in the figure
below. The critical angle of the prism is 42°.

A
B i C

i. What is the angle of incidence i on the surface AC of the prism? (1 mark)

ii. Draw and complete the diagram to show what happens to the incident ray when it meets the surface AC
of the prism. (2 marks)
iii. Name the phenomenon occurring in (ii) above and give one practical use of the prism when functioning
this way. (2 marks)
iv. State two conditions necessary for the phenomenon in (iii) above to occur. (2 marks)
