The thread gauge, also called thread template, is used to check the pitch of a thread. The
thread gauge has several templates on both sides. With the templates on one side the external
thread, for example of screws, is checked and with the templates on the other side the internal
thread, for example of nuts, is checked. The templates have different sizes with which the
corresponding thread size is checked.

Another possibility to measure a thread is the so-called thread plug gauge . The thread plug
gauge belongs to the group of form gauges and can be used to check not only the thread pitch
but also the thread diameter and the flank diameter. It has only one thread size on each side.
The plug gauge is mainly used to check a large number of identical threads in a workpiece.

When checking the thread, for example of a screw, the individual templates for the external
thread are created and the appropriate template is selected. If the template and thread match,
the pitch value of the thread can be read off the marking on the template.

The inspection of an internal thread is carried out according to the same principle. The test
piece, for example a nut, is simply screwed onto the respective test template for internal
threads. If the nut can be screwed onto the test template without difficulty, the pitch value can
also be read off the template. However, care must be taken to ensure that the nut is carefully
screwed onto the template, otherwise the thread may be damaged.

When testing with the thread plug gauge, the plug gauge is screwed into the thread to be
tested. Care must be taken that the thread plug gauge can be easily screwed in by hand
without any effort. If this is not observed, the threads of the workpiece and the plug gauge may
be damaged.

Incorrect handling of the thread gauge can very quickly damage both the workpiece and the
thread gauge.

Measuring errors can occur if the templates do not fit correctly in or on the thread or if the
templates are applied and screwed on with a lot of force. Measuring errors can also occur if the
templates are placed or screwed in at an angle.
