Summary

1. Criteria:
- Cover all the main points
- Paraphrasing skills

2. Process of summarizing:
- B1: Read the text and check the vocabulary carefully
- B2: Underline or highlight the key points
- B3: Make notes of these, taking care to use your own words
- B4: Write the summary using these notes, reorganising the order of ideas where necessary
- B5: Check the summary to make sure no important details have been omitted or distorted

3. Guidelines:
 Determine the main idea
 Write 1 sentence that captures the main idea
 Note the major areas or evidence of the piece
 Write 1 sentence that communicates the gist of each of these major areas

4. Problems:
 Plagiarizing
 Miss out on important details
 Express personal opinions
 Do not open the summary with “In this article, it says …” or “The article is about …”
 opening by specific name of piece + strong action verbs (show the function of the text) +
main idea (Eg: The 60 Minutes story “Thrift Shop Masterpiece” explains the controversy
surrounding a possible Jackson Pollack painting.”)
