Introduction

“Pedal your way to cleaner clothes, save energy, and get fit in the

process!”

Washing laundry is one of activities that many households do daily.

Basically this is done either by our hands or by powered machines. Washing

by hands involves scrubbing, beating, soaking and rinsing the dirty clothes.

This is a laborious and time consuming task. Electric Powered washing

machines were developed to eliminate the labour and time involved in

washing clothes manually.

A washing machine is a device designed to wash laundry such as

clothes and sheets without applying any physical efforts.

Washing machines are one of the most useful devices in households

today. A washing machine [1] is basically a machine designed to wash or

clean laundry such as towels, clothing and sheets. Generally washing

machines are powered by electrical energy.

Mechanical washing machines appeared in the early 1800s, although

they were all hand-powered. Early model cleaned clothes by rubbing them,

while later models cleaned clothes by moving them through water. Steam-

powered commercial washers appeared in the 1850s, but home washing

machines remained entirely hand-powered entirely until the 1900s, when

several companies started making electric machines.

The Automatic Electric Washer Company and Hurley Machine

Corporation both began selling electric washers in 1907, while Maytag

offered an electric wringer washer in 1911. In 1947, Bendix offered the first

fully automatic washing machine, and by 1953 spin-dry machines overtook

the wringer types in popularity.

In these days there exists a wide variety of washing machines in the

market and there is stiff competition among the manufacturers. The price of

these washing machines depends upon functions and features. All of these

washing machines are powered by electricity and the basic principle of

operation is by creating a turbulent flow of the detergent around the dirty

clothes.

However, in rural areas electric powered machines are not viable

mainly because there is no electricity or because the machine itself is

expensive. Women are mainly the ones burdened by the washing of clothes

and can spend an entire day washing clothes. The project intends to solve the

problem faced by so many people in their day-to-day life.

S.G.bahaley designed and fabricated a pedal powered multipurpose

machine. It is a human powered machine which is developed for lifting the

water to a height 10 meter and generates 14 Vol., 4 ampere of electricity in

most effective way. Power required for pedaling is well below the capacity

of an average healthy human being. The system is also useful for the work

out purpose because pedaling will act as a health exercise and also doing a

useful work.

Linxu, Weinanbai designed and developed a pedal driven washing

machine, the main objective is to provide a product with an alternative way

to wash clothes when there is no electricity. So the machine which is a pedal

driven machine, it satisfies the need of rural people by giving them an

alternative way of washing clothes which is quick, cost-effective and eco-

friendly. This study aims to design and fabricate a pedal driven

washing machine to obtain a less effort uniform washing and sinning and to

have a comparison between hand driven and pedal driven washing machine.

Furthermore, Pedal power [2] involves transferring power from a

human source by means of foot pedals and crank system. This form of

transfer has been mainly used for transportation, for example bicycles are

propelled by pedal power.

Throughout history, human has applied energy through the use of

arms, hands, and back. With the invention of bicycle and pedaling, legs also

began to be considered as a means to develop power from human muscles. A

person can generate four times more power by pedaling than by hand

cranking.

At the rate of 1/4 hp, continuous pedaling can be done for only short

periods, about ten minutes. However, pedaling at half this power (1/8hp) can

be sustained for around 60 minutes. Pedal power enables a person to drive

devices at the same rate as that achieved by hand cranking, but with far less

effort and fatigue. Pedal power also lets one drive devices at a faster rate
St. Mary’s Academy of Hagonoy
5
(formerly St. Anne’s Academy)

than before, or operates devices that require too much power for hand

cranking.

Based on the study of Adarsh Ranjan, Kushagra Sharan, and Sudeep

Mazumdar, the power levels that a human being can produce through

pedaling depend on how strong the pedalin person is and on how long he or

she needs to pedal. If the task to be powered will continue for hours at a

time, 75 watts mechanical power is generally considered the limit for a

larger healthy non-athlete. A healthy athletic person of the same build might

produce up to twice this amount. A person who is smaller and less well

nourished, but not ill, would produce less; the estimate for such a person

should probably be 50 watts.

All washing machines work by using mechanical energy, chemical

action and thermal energy. Mechanical energy is transmitted to the clothes

load by the rotation of the agitator or by the whirling action of the drum. In

this project, rotation of the drum or agitator is caused by the rotation of the

pedals. The temperature of the wash bath supplies the thermal energy. The

chemical energy is supplied by the detergent.

The literature and studies cited tackle the different concept, ideas, and

understanding generalization or conclusions and different development from

the past up to present and which serves as the researchers guide in

developing the project. Those that were also included in this chapter helps in

familiarizing information that are relevant and similar to the present study.

This paper intends to directly address the problems faced by people in

the rural areas when washing clothes by designing and fabrication a pedal

powered washing machine. The machine can also be used in urban areas to

save electricity and also to exercise. The machine does not require electricity

or an engine but uses human power. The transfer of human energy through

the use of a foot pedal and crank mechanism is what is known as Pedal

power. This is the mechanism that has been used to propel bicycles. The

paper designs and fabricates the pedal powered washing machine.

Experiments are conducted in order to determine the optimum operating

conditions.

Thus, designing and fabricating a pedal powered washing machine has

the following merits: First, The machine does not use electricity suitable for

places where electricity is not available or is expensive. Second, it saves

time as compared to washing clothes manually. Third, the machine will be

low cost and thus affordable. Fourth, one will also be exercising while

washing. Fifth, women no longer have to be in contact with soapy water

which may damage hands.

Specifically, the research CYCLEAN (Clean Your Clothes and do

Leisure Exercise ANytime): An innovation of Pedal Operated Washing

Machine sets out to answer the following questions:

1. How CYCLEAN innovation is different to an ordinary washing

machine?

2. What are the advantage and disadvantage of this innovation?

3. In what way will CYCLEAN innovation help the people in urban

areas?

Methods

This chapter presents the method and techniques, instrument of the

study, the data processing, and the materials and procedure to the said

experiment.

The researchers used a qualitative research using experimental

research design. It is a research conducted with a scientific approach, where

a set of variables are kept constant while the other set of variables are being

measured as the subject of experiment. This experimental research design

would help the researchers to determine the effectiveness of this research as

alternative for washing machine as well as they would come up to an

answers for their research problem.

The components used are:

Seat

Seat is an arrangement in any bicycle on which a person can sit

comfortably. Seat may be made of plastic, rubber, metal etc. The seat used

here is of satisfactory softness and big enough for most users to use the

machine without much fatigue.

Pedal

A bicycle pedal is the part of a bicycle that the rider pushes with their

foot to propel the bicycle. It provides the connection between the cyclist's

foot and the crank allowing the leg to turn the bottom bracket spindle and

propel the bicycle's wheels.

Chain

When creating your own human powered vehicles, a chain drive will

likely be your chosen power transfer system, as it is an inexpensive, easy-to-

install and highly efficient drive mechanism.

Bevel Gears

Bevel gears are useful when the direction of a shaft’s rotation need to

be changed. They are usually mounted on shafts that are 90 degrees apart,

but can be designed to work at other angles as well.

Bearing
St. Mary’s Academy of Hagonoy
10
(formerly St. Anne’s Academy)
A bearing is a machine element that constrains relative motion

between moving parts to only the desired motion. Bearings help in smooth

rotation of the shafts thereby reducing the pedaling effort. Fig.6 shows

bearing component.

Pulley

A pulley is wheel on axle or shaft that is designed to support

movement and change of direction of a taut cable, supporting shell is

referred to as “block”. A pulley may also be called a sheave or drum and

may have a groove or grooves between two flanges around its

circumference. The drive element of a pulley system can be a rope, cable,

belt, or chain that runs over the pulley inside the groove or grooves.

for washing machine or not. The researcher will only assess the result of the

said topic if it is functioning and tested.

Results and Discussion

A working model of pedal powered washing machine was fabricated using the selected

components as mentioned in the design. The machine was fabricated to study the design

feasibility and the efficiency of the working model. It was found that pedal powered washing

machine can be easily manufactured in a workshop using scrap components and conventional

manufacturing processes.

Human beings are very adaptable and can produce power over a wide range of pedalling

speeds. However, people can produce more power for a much longer time if they pedal at a

certain rate. This rate varies from person to person and depends on their physical condition, but

for every person there is a pedalling speed in between straining and fatigue that is the most

comfortable, and that has the most efficient power production

Cost benefit analysis is done to determine how well, or how poorly, a planned design project will

turn out. This chapter will be devoted on capital project appraisal which will be used to deduce

whether it is helpful or worth to implement the project.

It can be concluded that the pedal powered washing machine is an economical solution to the

washing problems faced by people in the rural areas as it is affordable and easier to implement.

Pedal powered washing machine is an environmentally friendly solution. It is the best solution

for the environment since some parts use recycled material and since it also saves water.
St. Mary’s Academy of Hagonoy
14
(formerly St. Anne’s Academy)
The solution does not require electric power or power from internal combustion engines thus

saving energy. The design has great benefits to the social live hoods of many people in the rural

areas. Villagers no longer need to waste time scrubbing clothes and thus can utilize that time for

other business like working in fields. The machine helps protects people’s hands which were

being damaged by washing detergents when scrubbing by hands. The machine doesn’t need one

to get into contact with the detergent thus no danger is posed to one’s skin.

The pedal-powered washing machine is quite different from the community’s current method of

washing clothes; the community may be reluctant to try the new machine. Achieved what we

desired i.e. to build a manually driven pedal powered low cost washing machine using locally

available materials and performing necessary function of washing and rinsing with ease. Our

washing machine doesn’t consume electricity. The washing machine can be used by the urban

people also while workout and exercises. It can serve dual purposes. While cycling, the clothes

can be washed utilizing the pedaling of the human being. If the production of this washing

machine is done at commercial scale then the total production cost of the machine can be

reduced to 40% of estimated cost.

The project entitled “Title” works on the principle of rotating impeller by paddling and causes to

washing clothes. The basic idea is to use a bicycle pedal stand as the power source, and use an

assembly of chain drive, belt drive and gears to connect it to a container.
