PLAN

Design:

Allowable Gross bearing pressure at fdn. level (WL Case) =

12x1.25+1500/1000x1.8= 17.7 t/m2

Permissible tensile Stress in flexure in brick masonry (WL Case) :

Ref. IS:1905-1987, Table1(Page 6), Grade of Mortar = M1
Ref. IS:1905-1987, Clause 5.4.2, Perm. Tensile stress in flexure in longit. dir = 0.14 Mpa
Hence, Permissible Tensile stress in flexure in longitudinal direction, st1 = 0.1862 Mpa
Ref. IS:1905-1987, Clause 5.4.2, Perm. Tensile stress in flexure in vert. dir = 0.07 Mpa
Hence, Permissible Tensile stress in flexure in vertical direction, st2 = 0.0931 Mpa

Calculation of Design Wind pressure :

Ref. IS:875 (Part-3) -1987, Table 1(page 11), Risk coefficient, k1 = 0.71
Ref. IS:875(Part-3)-1987, Table 2(page 12), Terrain,height & structure size factor, k2= 1.03
Ref. IS:875 (Part-3) -1987, Clause 5.3.3.1(page 12), Topography factor, k3 = 1.00
Ref. IS:875 (Part-3) -1987, Appendix-A(page 53), Basic wind speed, vb = 47 m/s
Design wind speed, vz = k1*k2*k3*vb = 0.71 x 1.03 x 1 x 47 = 34.3711 m/s
Design wind pressure, pd = 0.6*vz*vz = "0.6x34.3711 x 34.3711 = 708.82 N/m2
= 0.071 t/m2
Ref. IS:875 (Part-3) -1987, Pressure coefficient, Cp = 1
Hence, Effective Design wind pressure, pd = Cp x pd = 1 x 0.071 = 0.0709 t/m2
Tensile stress in longitudinal bending :
Considering per m height of b/w, udl (w) = 0.0709 t/m length
Max. longitudinal BM, M1 = wl2 / 9 = 0.0709x3x3 / 9 = 0.071 tm
Section modulus, z1 = 1000xtw2 / 6 ="1000x345x345 / 6 = 19837500.0 mm3
Hence, Tensile stress in bending in longit. dir. = M1/z1=0.071x1e7/ 19837500 = 0.036 N/mm2
<0.1862 HENCE OK

Tensile stress in vertical bending( ref. figure 1, about X-X) :

Area of section, A = wp x tp + (l - wp) x tw = 0.69x0.69+ (3-0.69) x 0.345 = 1.27305 m2
ymax = tp / 2 = 0.345 m
I about X-X, Ixx = wp x tp3/12+(l-wp)x tw3/12=0.69x0.0274+(3-0.69)x0.0034= 0.0372 m4
Vertical load of b/w at GL, P = A x H x 2.0 =1.27305x3.6 x 2 = 9.166 t
Moment due to wind, M2 = pd x l x H x H / 2 = 0.0709x3x3.6x3.6 / 2 = 1.378 tm
Hence, max.tensile stress in vertical bending = M2 x ymax/Ixx - P/A =
=1.378x0.345/0.0372 - 9.166/1.2731 = 5.565 t/m2
= 0.056 N/mm2
<0.0931 HENCE OK

Stability against Overturning :

Overturning Moment due to wind, M2 = 1.378 tm
Vertical load of b/w at GL, P = 9.166 t
Restoring moment due to s/w of b/w = P x tw / 2 = 9.16596x0.1725 = 1.581 tm
Flexural moment of resistance o/a tensile strength of masonry =
=st2 x Ixx/ymax= 9.31 x 0.0372 / 0.345 = 1.005 tm
Thus, total restoring moment = 2.586 tm
Factor of safety against overturning = 1.877
>1.5 HENCE OK

Check for stability of Foundation :

Vertical load of b/w above GL, P = 9.166 t
Vertical load of b/w fdn. & soil combine, P' = l x W x Dx1.9 =3x1.15x1.5x1.9= 9.833 t
Total Vertical load =SP = P + P' = 18.998 t
Moment due to wind about toe of b/w fdn., M3 =
= pd x l x H x (H/2 + D) =0.0709x3x3.6x(3.6/2 +1.5 2.526 tm
Gross soil pressure under the foundation =
= SP/Wl +/- M3 x 6/l x W2
=18.998/1.15/3 +/- 2.526x 6 / (3x1.15x1.15) = 9.33 t/m2 max.
1.69 t/m2 min.
Max.soil pressure= 9.33 <17.7 HENCE OK
