E: Hi Lersy, how are you?

E. Hi lersy I'm interested in what you do, I remember you told me that you were begin an
investigation.

L: I have been working on several things but since I am here in Bogota I'm interested in
other things , If I needed help and if I had known you were here, I would call you right away.

E: I would have helped you if you had asked me, but they told me that you investigated the
construction of the Eifel tower

L. If I had investigated more about this, I would have worked in Paris

L: I think I made a good choice when I decided to search more information about the
amazing Eifel Tower

E: I'd like you to tell me what you found out.

L: I tell you that I really liked that experience, it began to be built in 1887

E: Wow ! That was a long time ago, do you know how long the construction lasted?

L: Of course ,it was built in 2 years, 2 months and 5 days

E: it's amazing and tell me, do you know what was used in the construction?
L: A new pneumatic box system for excavation was used, also a new pneumatic
box system for excavation.

I: It was kind of modern for the time, right?

L: Yes of course, in those days nobody thought of doing a job of that magnitude, I wish I had
been in the whole investigation it was really amazing
E:Did you know that the Eiffel Tower is the most recognized symbol of Paris and the
most visited monument in the world?

L: Yes Edwin, the construction was especially complex because it was a swampy and
unstable area
E: What did they do when they discovered the complexity of the swamp area?

L: It was necessary to dig five meters below the water table until reaching firm ground
If I were one of those engineers I wouldn’t have known what to do
E : How long did it take to complete the foundation and what did it consist of?
L: The foundation was executed for five months. It consisted of a bed of compact gravel
several meters deep, on which large stone blocks were built on top of the blocks in which the
four pillars of the tower were anchored.
E: I wish I could have the chance to participate in the construction of something similar, it
would be an unforgettable experience, if I had built of that importance, I would be very happy

E: Imagine that I read an article about aesthetics in engineering as it is an important part

of the job, this includes shape, finishes and details.
L: In fact, in the Eiffel Tower we can see the resistance to wind and its variations, the basic
aspect of aesthetics is the functionality of its design and the beauty of its structure.
E: Do you know anything about the lighting of the tower?
L: not much, my research went more about the constructive part.
E. I have read that modern lighting started in 1985 and the old lamps that had been installed
in 1889 were replaced, If I had built it in that year, I would have changed the design
E: If I had enough money, it would be awesome travelling to Paris. Have you ever been to
Paris ?
L: Yes, I have. It was a beautiful place. I was enchanted
E: So what is the lighting of the tower like?

L: Lighting not much updated, technology improved, surrounding projectors turn on in

less than 10 minutes. Sensors inside activate it at dusk., everything is interrelated

E: Wow! that is modern and beautiful, it looks bigger, imposing also stronger

L: Nowadays all the efforts to modernize the Tower

luminaire are helping to improve its energy performance,

which has been continuously decreasing

E: fabulous, that helps a lot with ecological problems

L: I wish I had more time to talk with you, Walking is good for your health
