Types of sentences according to Function/ Purpose

When we write or speak, we can use many different types of sentences to

express what we want to say. Here, we will discuss four main types of sentences
namely declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory sentence. Each
has its own purpose and patterns. Don’t be afraid of their fancy names because
their meanings are simple and easy to understand.

Let’s Think About This

3
Try to construct your own sentences guided by picture and the purpose you
want to convey for constructing your own sentences. Try to construct two or
four sentences and use appropriate punctuation mark for each sentence.

C. Write two sentences that ask questions about the idea expressed in the
picture.
D. Write two sentences that tell something about the idea expressed in the
pictures.

Let’s Learn

Did you construct the required sentences? What do you think is your purpose in
constructing two sentences asked on letter A? on letter B? on C? and on D?
How about the punctuation mark you used, is it appropriate? You will realize
how important a sentence is for conveying meaning and expressing ideas.

5
Your sentences will be more likely similar from the sentences below:
A. Please join the international coastal clean - up.
Segregate wastes and follow waste management.
B. Wow! How good it is to clean the surroundings!
What a brilliant idea it is!
C. What is the unit used in water meter reading?
How do we compute our electric consumption?
D. Batanguenos use electricity wisely.

Could you identify which among these sentences function as:
Sentence/s stating or declaring something?
Sentence/s that ask questions?
Sentence/s that express strong emotions /feelings?
Sentence/s that give command, ask favor or making request?

with Php. 274.00 this month?

Let’s Learn

In linguistics, sentence function refers to a speaker’s purpose in

uttering a specific sentence, phrase, or clause. The four basic sentence
functions in the world’s languages include the declarative,
interrogative, exclamatory and the imperative. These correspond to a
statement, question, exclamation and command respectively.

Declarative sentence

This is the most common type of sentence according to function. It is

use to state something. There is a pattern for the formation of a declarative
sentence. In its formation, the subject comes first and the predicate follows
it immediately. In other words, the declarative sentence is the basic form.
The basic form of a sentence is when the subject comes first and the
predicate follows the subject immediately. Period (.) is the punctuation
mark used in this type of sentence. Examples are:

 Teen - agers from Batangas have shown care in the environment.

 The class of ALS Batangas city is making a debate about negative effects of
improper waste disposal.
 The teacher from Batangas is teaching learners how to compute water
comsumption.
 Cubic meter is the unit for water meter reading.

Interrogative Sentence

An interrogative sentence is a sentence that seeks to elicit information.

When you need to ask a question, the interrogative sentence comes handy.

7
Question mark is the punctuation used in this kind of sentence. Before we give
examples of an interrogative sentence, it is essential, at this point, to let you
know that there are various types of questions in English. We have the
following questions which are all forms of interrogation and, therefore, fall
under the category of interrogative questions:

Yes/No Questions - This type of question requires yes or no for an answer.

In the syntactic of the polar question, there is subject-operator inversion; that is,
we inverse the primary auxiliary such that it takes the place of the subject. We
also call this ‘S-op’ inversion. For instance:

 ‘Those girls are planting gumamela.’ becomes ‘Are those girls planting
gumamela?’
 ‘Your electric bill will increase this summer.’ becomes ‘will your electric
bill increase this summer?’
 ‘She was protesting her arrest for throwing toxic wastes at Wawa river.’
becomes ‘Was she protesting her arrest for throwing toxic wastes at
Wawa river?’

Here some more examples:

 Are those trash bins for waste segregation?

 Will you join the bakawan planting in Sta. Clara area?
 Will the garbage truck from the city come today?

Take note that at the end of the question, the voice pitch rises.

‘Wh’ Question - This type of question usually starts with the ‘wh’ element
which we refer to as the ‘Q-word’ that is, the ‘question word’. An answer to this
type of question cannot be ‘yes’ or ‘no’ like Question. Examples include:

 What are you doing at Meralco Batangas branch?

 How does it feel looking at Calumpang river today?
 Where do vendors in “Luma” public market dispose their wastes?
 Why is water bill tended to rise during summer?
 When are we planning to start wastes segregation?

Unlike the polar question, which has the possibility of only two answers,
that is ‘yes’ or ‘no’, ‘wh’–question permits broad or open-ended number of
answers. Note that the voice pitch drops at the end of the question. This
distinguishes it from the yes/no Question among other things. In forming this
8
type of question, the Q-word (what) comes first, the operator (the auxiliary
verb) follows, the subject comes next, then the lexical verb and the adjunct.

Exclamatory Sentence

This type of sentence expresses an emotional feeling and it is usually ended

with an exclamation point (!). In the formation of this type of sentence, the EX-
element, which brings out the exclamation, always comes first; then a
complement intensive usually follows and the subject and predicate follow
respectively. Each sentence formation depends on the structure of the
exclamatory sentence. Look at this example, “How I used to enjoy myself in
those days!,” (the EX-element ‘how’, an adjunct, comes first, then comes the
subject, predicate the complement intensive and the adjunct respectively. For
example:

 Wow! What a wonderful campaign this is!

 How lovely Mabini plaza looks!
 Eto Batangueno disiplinado!
 What a strange sight they saw in Verde island!
 What a mess!

Imperative Sentence

An imperative sentence is one that makes or expresses a command, gives an order

or gives an instruction. Depending on the tone of the voice, a command sentence can
also be a request sentence. In the syntactic formation of an imperative sentence, the
subject is deleted and an imperative verb is used. Note that we use ‘may’ and ‘could’
to make polite requests in English. Examples of the interrogative sentence include:

 Stop polluting rivers in Batangas immediately!

 Work on these recycling and reducing!
 Practice recycling and reducing.
 Stop wasting water and electricity.
 Get out of here now!
 State your mission clearly!

declarative sentence which provides statement or declare some idea. Interrogative
sentence seeks information by asking questions. It comes in varied forms such as yes/no

questions and “wh” questions. Third type is exclamatory sentence which expresses strong
emotion such as yelling and exclaiming. Then, imperative sentence which is used to give
command or directions and to request.
Based from the given key points above, try to make your own generalization
about the type of sentences according to use or function. Feel free to use three
or more sentences or a paragraph for your answer.
