LEARNING AREA : PHYSICS

LEVEL : A LEVEL

SYLLABUS TOPIC : ELECTRICITY AND MAGNETISM

SUB-TOPIC : ELECTROSTATICS

CALA TYPE : PEN AND PAPER ACTIVITIES,

CONSTRUCTED MODEL AND ILLUSTRATIONS

CALA TITLE : DUST EXTRACTION MACHINE

COMPETENCES/SKILLS : - RESEARCH
- COMMUNICATION
- CRITICAL THINKING
- PROBLEM SOLVING
- MODELLING
-

Background

Dust is the most common waste in school buildings and homes. Dust particles are difficult to
clean because the stick to the inaccessible places like the ceiling, air vents, window sills and
corners. Some of the places are difficult to clean using cloths. Most times some places are left
uncleaned because of this.

The CALA

The CALA has two separate parts, Part A and B. You need to complete both parts.

Part A
- Research on the problems faced when cleaning inside the laboratories and houses.
- Research on the problems caused by not cleaning these places that are difficult to
access
- Research on the ways of solving these problems.
- In your research include interviews, record notes, use ICT tools, and make recordings
of your findings on the problem faced when cleaning inside the buildings.

Part B

- Using the information in Part A, design a dust extraction model to help when cleaning
these places which are difficult to access.
- Make a dust extraction machine.
- Use the machine to clean the dust particles in the Physics lab.
- Write notes or explain orally about how the machine works.
How you will be assessed

- To assess your presentation, your facilitator will consider your research materials,
explanations about your model as well as the modelthat you have made.
- Achievement standards specific to this CALA will be provided so that you are aware
of the assessment criteria.

CALA Tips

- As you carry out your research, remember to write notes, use ICT tools or make
recordings.
- You can use different materials like clay, paper marched, picture collages, cardboard
boxes, manila.
- You can read your notes.
