3 OBJECTS
WARM UP
Choose 2 objects that best represent you (e.g. A book
if you like reading) and 1 which does not. Do NOT tell
us about them!

Let’s guess! Which object is the odd one?

Then, be ready to explain WHY you have chosen

them!
ACTIVITY 1
Read these quotes and reflect upon them. Do you agree with the
message?

ACTIVITY 2

Who do you believe?

Neil, Catherine and Rob all have some interesting and sometimes amusing
stories to tell you but how true are they? Have a listen to them here and
work out which one is fact and which ones are fiction. Only one story is fact
- that is, it really happened. As you listen see if you can spot the narrative
tenses being used.
ACTIVITY 3

Let’s check your understanding! Go to the following webpage and do the

quizz. Don’t read the transcript yet!
https://www.bbc.co.uk/learningenglish/english/course/intermediate/unit-20/se
ssion-3
Which elements make up a story?
ACTIVITY 4

Now, let’s go back to the webpage and read the transcript. Do they follow
these steps? Which tenses do they use to tell their anecdotes?

Narrative
Tenses
Past forms, a reminder!

❑ The past simple is used when there is a completed action in the past.

❑ The past perfect simple is used to show that one action in the past happened
before another action in the past.

❑ The continuous verb forms are used when actions continued for a period of time
and when actions in the past are interrupted by other actions.

•I was walking down the street to the shops. (The activity of walking continued for a
period of time)
•I hadn't been walking for very long when it started to pour down. (The walk started
before and was in progress when the rain started)
