Solution of case study

Answer to the question number 1
The fact that there was no orientation program at all for a pulp-making company owned by a
prestigious multiplant conglomerate is absurd. But yet Mr. Naik, unknowingly, placed an
order for materials worth 12 lakh rupees without prior approval and thinking he has the right
to do it all by himself. Hence it leaves a big question mark beside the process and
effectiveness of the orientation program. An orientation introduces new employees with all
the information he/she needs to function effectively in the organization. These also includes
rules of work i.e upper level approval. So if there was a proper orientation program, Mr. Naik
would have remembered about the conditions and pursued upper level approval. There is
every possibility the authority didn’t give enough effort in the orientation of Mr.Naik which
led to his unwanted behavior. Therefore, there was an orientation program but it wasn’t
effective enough for Mr. Naik to consider while doing a task.
Answer to the question number 2
There might have been some issues in the orientation program but it is also important for an
employee to think twice before doing a major task like placing an order worth 12 lakhs
rupees. Mr. Naik should have considered that such major transactions need approval or at
least an opinion of the prior level. Hence Mr. Naik should also be held accountable and the
behavior he expressed is highly inappropriate. If myself were in his place, I would have taken
the responsibility all by myself. The case doesn’t explicitly refer to the ineffectiveness of the
orientation program, it is an assumption. So ignorance on Mr. Naik’s part is very believable.
Again I would have sincerely apologized to my boss about the misunderstanding and vow to
never repeat it again, instead of being so arrogant about it. Also if given the opportunity, I
would have advocated the importance of prior approval for doing a task.
