5/16/2017 [WP] You gain EXP for everything you kill and you know when you gain EXP. Easy kills like bugs get you only a couple of EXP, tougher kills give more EXP. …

[– ] My Master was one of the most powerful. Usually, hunters would live in seclusion and kill their victims immediately or
quickly sell them to someone else. Everyone with enough EXP feared that they would get killed the moment they lower
their guard. This one didn't. He lived in a palace, surrounded by his slaves. There were many attempts but noone seems to
be a match for him.

From all his servants, he trusted me the most. I was nothing, certainly not a threat.

There were many people in the dining hall that night. Some kind of ball. It was a great prestige to be invited to one of
those. Every hunter from across the land came here to see the great lord. One of them was just talking to my Master.

"I tell you, best wine in the entire Amarrokk."

The lord just gestured to me, visibly trying to hide his drunkenness. As I approached, a flash of panic flashed across the
other man's face.

"There's no need to bother that servant, your highness. I can pour us the wine myself" he uttered.

"My master likes his slaves useful, not just uselessly standing aside." I responded with the sentence I heard so many times
and grabbed the bottle.

"But..." There was a mixture of confusion, panic and a silent threat in strangers look. My master watched the whole scene
with a smile. He loved it.

I poured both men a glass of the reddish drink and assumed my previous position. There's the lord and those lesser. He
makes no further differences.

The rest of the evening went normally. Nothing interesting happened anymore.

As usual, the ball ended late at night. The guests were slowly dispersing when a scream of agony pierced the chatter and
everything stoped. Everyone was procesing the act that was playing out before their eyes. Everything went silent. My
master writhed in pain.

I stood paralyzed. No, it can't be happening!

The high lord, slayer of thousands was dying. He let out his last gasp and fell to the floor.

The hall remained motionless for a while, but then it began. Chaos, slaughter. There was someone amidst the crowd who
wielded the lords power and you could have it all for yourself, if you could find and kill the man.

My EXP bar went crazy.

[– ] I come home and sit down with a sigh. I can't believe I did it again. I let my heart run away and let an ex take advantage of
me again. How many times am I going to fall for her lies? How many times will I just do what she wants when she bats her
eye lashes at me?

Pouring myself a drink I sit in the dimly lit room. How many times have I sat here after getting my heart broken like this.
Twice? Three times? More than I should. I look around at the pictures of us, images of the "good times". A bauble here, a
thing she got for me because she thought I would like it. Always the best right before she cheats and breaks my heart.

I set the glass aside and stand with burning purpose. Enough is enough. Getting a trash bag I fill it with everything that
every involved the both of us. Pictures gone. Figurines eliminated. Even the pillows and lamp. Anything that every
reminded me of her in the trash. Throwing it in the dumpster I made a solemn vow to never fall for her tricks again.

As I walk back inside I feel a jolt to my system. My skin glows lightly and I hear the sound of experience earned. Confused
I pull up my ExpTrckr app on my phone. I just leveled up. 1500 experience points?! What on earth gave me that?! I swipe
to open the log and my jaw drops.

1500 points earned for killing future regret. I gaped at the words. I always knew you earned points for killing bugs and
hunting animals but this? Does it work like that too? My confusion turns into pleasure and a genuine smile crosses my
face. I wonder what happens when I kill my doubts...

[– ] Most days love my job. I'm a case manager for a health insurance company and I specialize in transplant patients. When
someone with serious medical conditions gets sick enough that they're a candidate for organ transplant, they are
reassigned from their main case manager to me. I talk to them and their families, coordinate with doctors, compile
medical records for review, hold their hands while they wait on the transplant list, listen to them cry when it becomes too
much for them.

Sip

That's what I keep telling myself. Most days I love my job. Most days I love my job. Most days...

Sip

Not yesterday. Yesterday I had to tell a family...can't think about it.

Gulp. Cringe. Cheap box wine burns.

Yesterday I didn't want to look at my boss. I logged my PTO request to take today off and left before waiting for a reply.

Since yesterday, life has been one attempt at distraction after another.

My EXP counter showed a pending EXP update when I left work yesterday. In the past I've seen it pend before big events -
- a transplant authorization goes through : 200-500 pending EXP. occasionally more. Once the patient makes it through
the surgery then the EXP logs in my bank.

This time it's a pending "update". Not a pending increase.

Sip

I can't sit in my house anymore. Yoga pants and some shoes later I'm about to walk out the front door but I'm not ready to
leave a half full glass of wine. Scanning the kitchen there's a disposable coffee cup from yesterday. I toss out the black
coffee, pour in my wine, and snap the lid on.

sip. Coffee flavored cardboardeaux merlot just became a thing. I laugh to myself and feel tears coming on.

Walk. Lock door. Leave.

It's a pretty day. It's stupid pretty. This is kind of day when you'd have class outside in college because it was too beautiful
to be indoors but you know you'll get no work done regardless of where you are. Birds sing and kids laugh in the distance.

I don't deserve this pretty day.

Let's walk to the park so we can feel more alone.

Sip

A woman walks toward me with a stroller. She's smiling. Of course she's smiling. Her expression changes from polite
courtesy to recognition.

She calls my name, asking if it's me.

Oh no. Please don't be the widow of someone else I failed.

She's crying now. Sobbing. Hugging me. She tells me how she knows me.

Five years ago her boyfriend was a case of mine. He was in renal failure and being evaluated to receive a transplant. His
job changed insurance carriers so I couldn't manage his case anymore since he was no longer a member with my company.
I assembled his documents from all his physicians and sent them to his new insurance company. I did some standard
follow ups and he got the transplant. Since then, he married and his wife and newborn were now on the sidewalk with me.

His case wasn't anything exceptional. I only got 200EXP for that one.

Apparently they have a photo of me and him from one of his hospitalizations framed on their mantel. She shows her baby
to me and says it's because of me that this is possible. She invites me to the baby's christening.

I accept.

We part.

Maybe today isn't so bad.

Sip

My EXP monitor increments +5 EXP.

Ha. I go to take a sip....

You know when you catch something in the corner of your eye and you react before you can think?

My coffee cup hits the pavement.

I take off running past the woman and her baby to the intersection in time to hear a crash and screaming.

Three cars. I smell gas. People screaming. Lots of people standing around.

Car 1 ran into Car 2 and hit the rear drivers side. Car 2 rear ended Car 3.

One man on the ground. Looks like he was ejected from Car 1. Car 1 has no passengers. Air bags didn't deploy. Probably
not wearing his seatbelt -- idiot. He's unconscious and nonresponsive. Weak pulse.

Triage Driver 1. Leave him. Move on to car 2.

Car 2. Driver with child passenger in back seat. Air bags deployed. Child is crying and the driver is dazed but getting out of
their vehicle and going around to open the child's doors. I ask if he's ok as I move to Car 3.

Car 3: Driver is a woman, in shock. Air bags deployed. No obvious injuries.

Car 2 is on fire. The dad with the child can't open the door and he's desperately trying. The window is busted out. I'm
smaller than the dad is so I climb into the back seat from the other side, unbuckle the child and hold him as someone
grabs me from behind and helps pull me out of the car. The Dad is next to me now and takes the child in his arms like he's
never letting go and we all move away from Car 2.

I look at Car 3. She's been helped out and is standing but shaking.

Manage to get the dad and child to sit on the curb next to the woman. This is no small feat for people in shock. I explain
I'm a nurse and quickly check them over. They seem shaken but ok. Evaluating the child is difficult but I'm trying my best.
The woman is getting more and more panicked. She's screaming looking at the ejected driver.

He's still face up on the pavement. I go over then kneel down next to him and check him. Very weak pulse. His neck is at
an odd angle compromising his airway.

5/16/2017 [WP] You gain EXP for everything you kill and you know when you gain EXP. Easy kills like bugs get you only a couple of EXP, tougher kills give more EXP. …
Here's my confession. I'm lingering at his body. I know I should try to help him. My medical training tells me what I
should do. But I can't describe why I just bring myself to help him. He's a moron who didn't wear his seatbelt. There's not
too much left of him after the asphalt scraped him up. Not worth the trouble, I rationalize.

There's not much I can do for him anyway so I tell everyone to back away from him because they've got their cell phones
out taking pictures. I go back to the woman who now is screaming asking if he's dead.

No, he's alive, I assure her.

Paramedics arrive and they take over. The police talk to me because I was there. Fireman start to clear the scene. They
load the ejected driver into an ambulance. In a few hours it'll look like nothing ever happened here.

The paramedics ask me to sit in the back of an ambulance. Apparently I cut my arms up getting the kid out of the car.
Adrenaline is wearing off. They patch me up. Someone brings me coffee and a blanket.

It starts to hit me that they may have smelled the alcohol on my breath. No one has given me a breathalyzer test yet. My
heart starts to sink. A drunk nurse at a car accident. This could end my career.

FML.

One of the police comes over to sit by me. The officer thanks me for my help and offers me a ride home. I politely decline,
trying to cover my breath with coffee.

That night I sleep like the dead and wake the next day. My EXP counter is pending again.

While I'm getting ready for work my EXP counter ticks up +1500EXP.

What. The. Hell.

All I did was brush my teeth.

Then my counter starts pending more updates.

+200 EXP pending *

I get to work and sit at my desk. I have a dozen messages waiting for me.

+200 EXP pending

And my boss wants to see me.

At least I brushed my teeth.

I sit it his office and he's beaming.

+200 EXP pending

He tells me that five of my cases are getting transplants today because an MVA yesterday resulted in a decedent organ
donor. They took the donor off life support this morning and the transplants are going through today.

+200 EXP pending

Most days I like my job. Today is one of those days. I love what I do.

This week I'll be at the top of the leaderboard again.

[– ] The rain outside is tapping on the window. You're sitting on the couch watching a movie on the TV. It's an action movie
about an arms dealer in the Middle East. Its depiction of the war was fairly accurate but the main characters are
unconvincing.

The movie reminds you of the war you've fought five years ago--has it really been that long? You remember your combat
buddies. The faces of the ones that fell are coming back quite vividly. Many bad memories, but it did good things for your
EXP rank. Life is comfortable because of your sacrifices.

The army has been good for you. Taught you some discipline. You weren't always such a stand up citizen. As a matter of
fact.. You were a pretty bad bully when you were younger. There was this one kid. He was so helpless and every time he
felt bad he just kept munching away at his candy bars. Thinking back at that time makes you angry. That kid was so
annoying but the things you did to him were inexcusable. The army managed to set you straight, and war was a good way
to get EXP.

You try to shake the images of war out of your mind by focusing on the film as you feel a hot tingling in the back of your
head. It's been five years since you've felt this synthetic endorphin rush. The army implant has been dormant for so long.
The unforgettable feeling takes hold of your body. You're strong, competent. You've done something great and remarkable
and your peers are celebrating your existence. You chug your beer and let out a euphoric roar.

It's only when the rush subsided that you wonder what just happened. That was the rush of a kill. The combat terminal!
You need to know who died and how. You throw the junk that has gathered on your army trunk on the floor. The tablet
starts up with a ~plink~.. Thank God there's still some power in it. You navigate to your kill feed as you see a name you
haven't seen in 20 years.

[– ] Eh. Depends. Sometimes, a person dwells on the exact things a specific person has done to them. Especially if it was
constant and brutal. I obsessed over the horrible words of a specific classmate for years and years after graduating
highschool, before picking up my broken pieces and putting my confidence back together. So I can imagine that the
violent words of a specific person can be the sole reason they finally end it all, after obsessing over it their entire life.

But, if you could spread points out like that, maybe he got a lot of points for being the catalyst of this man's life of torture,
and other people got only a couple points for what they did. Maybe they don't know how or if the suicide points are
divided up between people, and only get the notification on the amount recieved, name, and cause of death.

[– ] I've never been one to care much about games. Though I owned one of those gray brick Game Boys as a kid, I'd largely
fallen out of gaming as my life grew busier with work, friends and family.

Smartphones changed all of that.

After the success of games like Minecraft and Candy Crush, not to mention augmented reality games like Pokémon Go, it
was only a matter of time before technology and real life began to intersect. A new app, promoted heavily as a Lifestyle
Improvement Solution by the federal government, offered Experience Points for all sorts of things. Suddenly, there were
people happy to volunteer to help out at various events, if only for a measly 4 EXP.

So too did people start going out and killing mosquitoes en masse, as every death, somehow, either through drones or
satellites or some sort of arcane paper pushing magic, was recorded.

Weekly and monthly quests that ranged from the easy (put your garbage and recycle bins out the night before pick up) to
the challenging (moderate exercise at least two hours, five days a week) to the outright impossible (find a new source of
platinum on your land).

Death was a big thing, especially after the Freedomites won the White House in 2024. They knew who the real problem
was, they said. Criminals. The homeless. People with mental illnesses.

The quests became darker and more dangerous.

Shave a homeless man until he's hairless and power wash him until he's free of vermin.

Make people who are going off their meds take them on threat of a beating.

Post videos of destroying someone's drug stash along with their personal information.

It got worse before it got better.

Gun restrictions were loosened, but only for people who registered Freedomite, and they only allowed you to join if you
could prove that you had three generations worth of white ancestors on both sides of your family.

It soon became a crime to have a tan.

Not literally, of course, but if someone looked at you and thought that you looked dark enough to be a criminal or one of
the unclean unhoused, you were in for a world of hurt.

Murder used to mean something awful. Now they have shooting galleries for the "elite" that feature the highest scoring
victims...or Freedom-Hating Criminals, as they have all been branded. EXP gained from taking these lives are minimal for
the very rich, as they are all at levels that most of us consider "beyond the pay wall."

It doesn't stop them from "keeping up appearances."

There are still quests, but they're all twisted. They tell us to kill, injure, maim. They want us to tear each other apart, and
for what? Many of us now refuse to play, though the app now comes standard on all phones; its red, unblinking eye seeing
all.

I hadn't played in years when, one morning, while sitting alone at home, I heard the telltale sound, like a slow slide
whistle, of my EXP bar filling. It went on for an hour- that terrible sound filling me with dread.

A cheerful trill sounded on my silent-mode-only phone, and I stared down at the cartoony envelope on the screen.

Hesitantly, I tapped it with my finger and confetti exploded around the screen

"Congratulations!" A cheery voice said, her false exuberance filling the kitchen. "You have been selected to receive 1500
EXP as part of our limited Citizen Run Event! The rules are simple. A lucky few are given large quantities of EXP to
protect with their lives...literally! Your name, image and location are given to all participants twelve hours after, to give
you a fair head start.

If you can hold onto your EXP until the first of the month, the change will be permanent. This is just another of the new
benefits that we have been working on implementing for your enjoyment as a citizen of our free and glorious country!"

I stammered out an expletive and dropped the phone to the floor as the shock began to wear off and a deep sense of horror
filled me.

"Now then, citizen." The recorded voice seemed to deepen, then, all traces of frivolity disappearing as it said one final
word:

"Run."

What a coincidence... If I was a betting man, which I'm not considering my circumstances, I'd say that it is my neighbor
and his skinny brother that will carry the thing...

"Man is this thing even going to get through the front door?" came from outside, barely comprehensible... It does sound
like the skinny brother. Everything is set now I only have to wait, and with my remote control I turn on the cameras right
outside my entrance. I might need this for court, after last time... they don't really think it is a coincidence anymore.

A few minutes pass... I can hear my neighbors have managed to get the piano up to this floor already, just in time.
Suddenly a siren can be heard in the distance, the police are here. You'd think by now whenever something big happens
they'd make a B line towards me, but I guess they still check to see who receives the EXP after a big event.

"Oh damn man! If the police catch my car in the front I'm going to lose it! Wait here I'll go move it!" from the hallway... it
was my neighbor. "Wait man you know I have to go don't just... damn it"

Looks like the skinny brother is indeed late.

As the siren gets closer and louder, the dog downstairs wakes up just in time and starts moving around on the sidewalk...
I'm guessing my neighbor is on the second floor, the dog is thus about to eat the peanut butter

I get out of my chair and head towards the kitchen window... Indeed the dog ate the slice and is waiting outside the door.
It took me a bit of effort to train him...

As my neighbor goes out, the dog goes inside the block, my neighbor dashes and gets in his car, driving off just as the cops
stop. They look up and see me, and start running towards the entrance...

I wonder if they think I am guilty because I was already expecting them... well, either way they shouldn't make it out...

As I head towards the outside door I can hear clunks coming from outside... the skinny is already trying to lift it up by
himself... that's a shame...

As I grab the door handle I hear just barely... "Stupid dog, move out of the way"

The cops sprinted on the stairs, they are almost here... I open the door.

"Hello officers! What brings you here this day?" I ask, trying to sound friendly...

"May we come in?" they say... Hmph, I found that answering a question with another question is always... rude...

The dog got onto the floor and is moving behind the officers starting to go up the stairs.

I gaze at them and say calmly "Well I am sorry officers but I am afraid that... there's not enough time for that!"

I finish my sentence just in time, as I hear a shout coming from the upper floor.

"AHHH! A DOG!" the skinny man says, losing his weak grip on the piano which proceeds to fall down making a huge noise
as it's wheels hit the stairs.

"Goodbye" I say, grinning as I close the door on the cops which are frozen in fear... I knew it was going to be useful at some
point.

The piano comes down crashing on them, a loud noise as it hits them and then the wall the was opposite of the staircase,
one of them dies instantly and the sanguine bar in the right of my peripheral vision starts to glow and increase again... it is
almost full.

The dog didn't stop due to the noise. Poor fellow is almost completely deaf, it barely even startled him. He's an old dog...
but he makes his way onto the last floor and starts howling.

I make my way slowly towards the kitchen, out of the multitude of pigeons that are flying down to get away from the
howls, a raven lands on my open window.

It then proceeds to fly inside and land on my table, starts pecking at the bread crumbs on the table.

"So... Death!" I say towards the crow, smiling.

The sanguine bar starts glowing again, filling up to full and emptying"

"Have I unlocked any new traits?" I continue.

The crow stops pecking and it's eyes glow red... We all receive experience points for the kills we made... it was just a
coincidence that I was the only one, as far as I know, to discover what the levels are used for...

A coincidence...

[– ] My life has always been a strange one. Sure, all life must end the lives of others to thrive, but I live in death. Every time I
kill, I grow stronger. My body, my brains, my skills: they all improve automatically. It is a horrid power. When I was
younger, it was easy to kill bugs, but empathy began to stay my hand as I aged. Even worse, I need to kill it myself for it to
count. Buying a steak does nothing for me unless I kill the cow myself. As time went on, I did my best to try to forget about
my strange gift.

However, one cannot escape their destiny forever.

My girlfriend and I were on hard times. We were arguing, fighting, and getting at each other's throats. She wanted things
to get more serious, she wanted to marry, she wanted kids. I wasn't ready for that yet. I was 20 years old, just starting my
career, and ready to do something with my life. Having a kid would tie me down and I couldn't let that happen.

One night, after a particularly bad argument, I went to the local bar for some drinks and to cool off. While I was enjoying a
shot of Jack, I got a surprise visit by a sweet, young thing looking for a good time and a good man. Maybe it was the booze
or maybe I was just a piece of shit, but I went with it. It's what I wanted at the time: easy companionship.

It turned from one night to a series of nights. I began to neglect my girlfriend for being "a nagging bitch." I wonder if I
could see the warning signs if I got a second chance.

She was definitely able to see a set of warning signs herself and followed me one night. When she found us, she was
devastated. I tried to go after her, explain to her that I was weak, that I was sorry, but I couldn't catch her. She drove off.

As I was constantly hammering her phones with calls, desperately trying to reach her, I got 1500 XP: one for her and one
for our unborn child.

After lunch I headed back downstairs to the tier 1 bug farming room, where people like me could gain some exp without
any real training or talent. After nearing the end of my 1 hour bug squashing session I suddenly gained 1500 xp. I looked
around, nothing but bug guts everywhere, the usual. Curious as I was leaving the bug cage the outer door locked. The voice
on the com said that it was for the safety of the staff and other kids, and that the authorities would soon arrive.

I knew a 1500 xp gain was considered a tier 5 kill, a exp gain worth a humans life. But there were no individuals around. I
started to panic, slipped on some bug guts, face falling to the ground. As I raised myself up I saw spotted centipede, I got
closer to its remains, and realized it also looked like a spider and had big beady eyes and a hairy body. Realizing I had
killed something so different and alien scared the shit out of me but I relaxed, at least it wasn't a human and I wasn't going
to jail. But just as I had eased up when the police were unlocking the cage, another one of those came through the bug
dispenser and pounced onto the officer. Before I could realize what had happened he was on the ground. Blood was slowly
pooling around his head as he attempted to get up. His hand covered his right eye as blood was squirting everywhere.
Losing balance he put the hand covering his eye on the ground to support himself up. As he looked at me I saw the bug
burst out of his right eye socket, growing plump as it drank the juices from the eye. The next thing I heard was the blast
and ringing in my ears as the officer had shot himself in the head killing both it and himself. Guts everywhere, I didn't stay
to meet another bug, fuck that, I got up and ran the fuck home.

"Sigh, 0.1 EXP increase only a common green snail" The youth continued running north of his apartment to the center of
Waterway.

The people of this world have always been able to gain Experience Points from various tasks; Killing monsters, completing
quest, for filling an achievement or dream, etc.

When people gain enough EXP they Level Up, which in turn gives them a small increase in a variety of attributes, but also
the best reason to Level Up is to gain a Skill Point which can be spent on increasing an ability or skill, i.g. Magic, Weapon
handling, Elemental affinity, ect.

Naturally people lose their retained EXP when they Level Up and more EXP is needed for the next.

As the time passes, the sun now begins to slightly descend under a circular two-storey arching building.

A person stands in front of the entrance, Grumble Grumble Where is that little sod? A middle aged woman with a tall and
toned physique, a few visible grey hairs standout against her vibrant red hair.

Her face goes from scornful and angry to a look of relief as a young red-faced boy appears across the horizon.

As the youth who is wincing and gasping for air approaches the woman, he manages to mumble out " Half an hour early,

"You still need to win your match today for our bet, Jason." His teacher couldn't help but reveal a slight smile as she
looked at the youth, even if Jason isn't a genius or, excels at anything she has always been intrigued by him for a unknown
reason, "Quickly lets get you prepared".

Jason nodded as they both walked towards the entrance of the building, a 10ft black door with a red carvings of beasts
upon it.

His teacher reaches in her pocked to pull out a silver card and shows it to the door. A hologram comes from the door
revealing a picture and some details:

Name: Cassandra Ink

Warrior Title : Fire Ink
Occupation: Teacher
Level: 32
Age: 26
Background: Common
Noticeable features: Red Hair, Scarlet Eyes, Prosthetic Arm.

The picture is clearly of Cassandra, however it must have been taken a few years ago as she has ho visible grey hairs and
less wrinkles in the profile.

The black door swung open, but all Jason was thinking about was the details he didn't notice about his teacher "Only 26?
Fire Ink? Prosthetic arm?" before he could delve deeper in thought he was snapped awake by the light nudge from his
teacher.

Jason began to look in his pockets for his own silver card, and nothing, he checked again, and again,"Err.. I forgot my
membership card" A panicked look appeared across his face as he looked up at his teacher with remorseful eyes.

"Only you could somehow ruin today, at least I came prepared." Lights suddenly flashed on from a distant white car, and a
slight humming noise from it that pleased the ears, as driving itself in front of Cassandra.

She jumped in the drives seat and opened the side door for Jason. The tranquil and soothing humming from the engine
quickly changed to a ferocious roar as Cassandra shoved her foot on the gas.

It only took them few minutes to get to Jason's apartment, but for Jason he wasn't sure if he would survive, as Cassandra
was driving like a lunatic nearly double the speed limit, zigzagging and driving though red lights.

Jason was sure he didn't die then at least the police would catch them, to his surprise not one police car was on the road.

As Jason opened his door to the apartment he imminently began opening draws, flipping cushions and looking
everywhere. A flash of relief crossed his face as he ran toward the bathroom cupboard.

A silver card next to his toothbrush, as he was about to grab it his tattoo suddenly began to glow, but this time was
different from every other time he could somehow feel a terrifying strength in the pit of his stomach, like a creature so
powerful it could rip open the sky itself, his body felt like it was on fire and the pain became overwhelming.

Jason's head began to spin incapable of bearing the pressure he began to passed out as his face hit the tiled floor.

The last thing he saw was the tattoo on his right hand, the glow was disappearing and he could make out the words.

[– ] Part 2

The last thing Jason could remember was overwhelming heat of his body, the cold of the bathroom floor and the words
Divine Bloodline tattooed on his right hand.

But now he wasn't anywhere recognizable , he is in what seems to be a complete dark void . However it gave Jason the
feeling familiarity and comfort that washed away any pain he previously felt.

As Jason looked around the void he notice a tiny flame.

As Jason looked around the void he notice a tiny flame.

So warm, so beautiful, so welcoming.

Unknowingly he moved towards it, the warmth welcoming bliss it gives but as he slowly got closer it snarls and roars like a
cornered beast.

As Jason scoped up the tiny flame in his hands he could feel the scorching heat but it didn't hurt him, it continued to
wrapped around his body kindling him penetrating deep into his body, it warmed every cell with complete bliss.

As the flame completely covered Jason's body the feeling of rebirth popped into his head.

As the flame gradually dispersed into his body, a powerful but cold and pure voice swept accost the blank void.

"I have awoken at last, come see me child"

Complete darkness still filled the void until suddenly, a golden light appeared off in the distance. As Jason got near the
light it became bigger and bigger, he was shocked to discover it was gigantic red dragon.

The red dragon had four large wings, five claws and was covered with red scales with small golden embers covering them.
It had two large horns sprouting from its head in a sinuous manner.

When Jason stopped looking at the red dragon he noticed he was in a ancient dinning hall with a ceiling as high as he
could see and tiles more fabulous than diamonds.

As Jason could now see more clearly that before he was shocked again to see dragon was over a hundred meters long.

The cold and pure voice came from the dragon again, this time shacking the hall, " Quite lucky for me to awoken in the
blood of the only remaining family descendant"

Jason could come to terms with this he blurted out, " Are you real or, is this a dream"

"Maybe you are dreaming, I cant decide that for you" the dragon replied, " As for if i am real, you could say i have been
apart of you since your birth"

Jason is only 14 years old he couldn't keep his thoughts or excitement in check, he asked" Why do i have a dragon apart of
me anyway?"

The red dragon replied " I am not just a any dragon, I am a dragon who has absolute over fire, I am of the seven children
of the dragon god, the being who help forge the heav-"

As the dragon was talking its gigantic body shuttered and turned transparent.

Jason is dumbfounded, "Whats happening to you?"

The dragon said in a solemnly tone "I gave you all my energy before and not my current form is fading, one thing you must
learn now that i have awakened, all of my power is sealed inside of you and some of seals are now weakening which will
break soon, however your body isn't strong enough for more energy it cannot withstand anymore."

“Will, will I die? Jason asked.

"Yes" The dragon replied.

"Then what can I need to do?” Jason said, he's never had to worry about the thought of dying at a young age.

"You should now have my the power, which will be a good propelling point for your future to become stronger" The
dragon replied in calm and soothing voice.

"what abou-

As Jason was about to ask a question to the red dragon as the hall dispersed and everything distorted around him.

When Jason opened his the next moment he was welcomed by the sight of the bathroom floor and a silver card next to
him.

His body was soaked in sweat, and he felt an unspeakable pain. He also clearly felt that his high body temperature had
begun to cool.

Was it a dream or not a dream?

No, it was not!

Calm down, calm down, i need to be calm He said to himself.

Suddenly when Jason began to take a deep breath he heard a distant car horn coming from outside.

[– ] Nobody took me seriously, who had ever heard of a grown adult with less than 100xp? No one, that's who. Here I am in
my late twenties with only the odd accidental insect death that can never be avoided. It wasn't that I wanted to avoid
gaining xp though, it's that I just couldn't bring myself to be around death of any sort. I was a joke. The lily-livered insect
lover. Wouldn't harm a fly, literally, look at his xp.

That all changed last week though. I had been exhausted due to all the changes recently. Long hours, little sleep, I was
whacked. A rare five minutes to myself, sat on the porch to enjoy the nice sunny day. A cold soda in my hand before I had
to get back to the chores of the day. Suddenly the tracker pinged.

I looked at it puzzled, I hadn't moved a muscle, just sat there facing the sun with my eyes closed. 1,500xp? How had I
gained that fuc... shit. My newborn had still been in the car.

[– ] Before you draw any conclusions, you gotta realize that I was a pretty sad and pathetic person back then. You can judge
me all you want, but you know you've been me at least once in your life, losing restraint of your emotions and doing things
you regret. Nothing can excuse what I did, but maybe hearing me out with some empathy might help your understanding.

See, three years ago I was a very petty person with a very serious online gaming addiction. I had barely any actual life XP,
and instead of improving that, I looked to other mediums to prove my worth. Although I was only good enough to be
considered "above average" (to those who know gaming, I was barely platinum) I cared nothing more than to raise my
ranking, feeding a very delusional dream of becoming a professional player, even though I lacked the mentality and
discipline to actually make it. This led to a lot of frustration, which I have never been able to internalize very well. I think
this traces back to my dad's aggressive personality and how much I idolized him.

Anyway, like you may have already assumed, I raged a lot, both at teammates and at adversaries, without measuring
viciousness at all. I would stop at nothing to make whoever was my target feel like a worthless piece of garbage, so that I
could not only take out my anger, but also elevate myself, feel that rush of adrenaline and dopamine that came from being

https://www.reddit.com/r/WritingPrompts/comments/6b9ro1/wp_you_gain_exp_for_everything_you_kill_and_you/ 22/36

superior. This shitty attitude has led to me being banned several times from several games, even though I always managed
to crawl back in so I could get my fix. Obviously, seeing how I'm wording all this, I'm not about that life anymore.
/r/stopgaming has helped me find new hobbies and my therapist helped me find the empathy to stop being a toxic person,
but the motivation for this didn't come from me wanting to be a better person.

It came out of despair and regret, from me doing a horrible, horrible thing.

That fateful day, I was on a hot winning streak, getting closer and closer to leaving the ditch that is platinum. I got into a
promotional series, and had won two games. One more win was between me and Diamond League, one more win until I
got that intense rush of emotion and could finally brag and talk down my friends who didn't believe me.
And then I got matched with violetpixie.
I should have known right from the pre-match chat that it wasn't gonna work. They used ellipsis way too much, said they
weren't going to perform well in the role assigned to them, and asked a teammate to switch. They didn't respond, either
afk or not wanting to bother, but that simple thing is what set everything in motion.

It was a shitshow. Violetpixie got outclassed by their opponent in multiple factors, getting way too behind to make any
contribution to the team. I was doing very well, so I thought that I could compensate for that and carry the game. I was
focused on my game until their opponent started messing with it. They had fed off of Violetpixie too much. They were too
strong for me to deal. I got killed, my advantage cut off, and suddenly MY opponent started getting strong. Violetpixie had
ruined the game, and were constantly apologizing and trying to justify themselves, to which I responded with the typical
swearing and threats. It was mild then, because I still had two more chances to win that promo series. We lost shortly
after, and I pressed Play Again, determined to swing my luck around.

I got matched with violetpixie again.

I didn't notice until it was too late, because they were very quiet, and seemingly had gotten the role they wanted. Getting
into the game, I told myself that history was not going to repeat itself.

They still sucked. Dare I say, they played even WORSE in their favorite role than they had last game. I was not about to
have this guy ruin my chances, so I threatened to dox them if they didn't stop dying. A false threat, of course (I don't know
how to dox, ddos, whatever), but it worked. They were incredibly agitated, but they stopped dying, taking any kind of risk
whatsoever. Problem was, the character they chose was incredibly bad at being passive, and out of fear, they didn't engage
when it really mattered, and we lost again.

I was furious, swearing I would find out where they lived and ruin their life, make sure that all their family and friends
hated them and dumped them to die in a ditch. I really should have stopped there, stopped after they replied "they already
do". Instead I used that information as ammo, threatened them one last time, and queued for another match.

I got matched with violetpixie again. This time, I tried to get them to dodge, tried to discredit them to all our teammates,
see if I could turn them against the guy who had single-handedly ruined the last two games and was being my gatekeeper
to diamond. I insulted them, threatened them, even looked their IGN up to see if I found their real name to back my
threats up. The very last thing I told them, before they dodged the game, was the following:

"Kill yourself already so you stop ruining other people's fun, dipshit".
"ok"

They left the lobby, and I was incredibly anxious to get in game and finally end those promos. In that rush of adrenaline I
got from pushing someone down, I absolutely dominated the game, talking smack to my opponents and pushing them to
surrender. I won. I was in DIAMOND now. I had the momentum to push to Master, I had to, nothing could stop me now.

Nothing but those 1500 EXP that showed up on my tracker 5 minutes after I won that match.

If you take anything from my story, I would like it to be "don't be a dipshit". It isn't people's fault you have anger issues,
and everyone's fighting a battle we don't know about. I would like to apologize deeply to violetpixie and their family, and I
hope my story stops at least one person from pushing someone over the edge.

As the ceremony started I noticed a group of three people who looked particularly distressed; a woman and two kids. I
imagined it was the immediate family. As the pastor read the last rights and gave a prayer, I was given the go ahead by my
supervisor to lower the casket. I wouldn't begin to dump the dirt until after the crowd had left.

It took about 45 minutes to refill the hole since our machinery had broken. Man I hadn't done physical work like that in a
while. I was tired beyond belief. An idea popped into my head after my shift had ended. I felt like going home and opening
a bottle of 25 year old whiskey I was saving. Man that stuff was amazing. I managed to finish half of the bottle in one
sitting. Naturally I passed out.

The next morning I woke up and I was relieved to have recieved a phone call from my supervisor telling me to go ahead
and take a day off. He didn't give a reason why even after I called him back to ask. He only said "something happened, but
I'll keep you updated." I didn't think anything of it.

I went to turn my TV on to see if any soccer games were on. I like to watch the beautiful game. I flipped to my normal
channel for soccer, but it seemed nothing was on. I then decided to start browsing channels and when I came across the
news channel it caught my attention. A story was being talked about and it was centered around the cemetery I work at. I
was confused but on the edge of my seat.

The news reporter had stated "A tragedy has struck here at the Arlington National Cemetary when it was discovered that a
man recently buried had still been alive." I was frozen in my chair. I couldn't move except to turn the volume up. I kept
telling myself "there's no way. It has to be someone else. It...cant be...me?"

After some time went by, the reporter said the man's name. "Captain John H. Miller..." fear had surged through my body. I
had just buried that man! "After an autopsy occurred it was found out that Captain Miller had suffered from poisoning
after ingesting some puffer fish. It had imitated him being dead and convinced everyone else that he was. The immediate
family then arranged his burial where after being buried he suffocated." She said he had died around 3am.

I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I reached for the bottle of whiskey I had the night before and opened it to finish it off
in an attempt to calm myself and take my mind off of what happened. But as I was drinking it I noticed my watch. It had a
notification on it. I put the bottle down and opened the screen on my watch. It was an eEXP-4ALL notification. Fear once
again struck my body. In an attemot to overcome my fear i opened the notification. I had gained 1500exp...at 3:23am.

[– ] There I was, sitting in my designated chair at home, making memes and singing along to this old game I used to play
which tells you how good you were at singing the song it gives you.

"OH DAMN! THIS IS MY JAM!!" I exclaimed having heard the first few chords of my favourite song. As I began singing
along I noticed a small fruitfly near my arm, laying on the armrest, still singing along I casually swept my arm out,
propelling the fly into my range for a devastating kick.

I have to say that I'm getting pretty good at this, if I say so myself. A few minutes passed and as my song strung out its
final chord I heard another...

"Huh?"

I hear an overdramatic voice from my TV speakers shout, 'WOW! You totally destroyed that song, wanna go again?'

[– ] The sniffle where always hell, I could never quite get rid of it. Being a scientist I should have been able to cure this
disastrous disease, it plagued so many it never killed but it was damn hell.

The exp was something you learnt from a child, bugs where easy, serial killers where terrifying, scientists like me? We had
a whole different exp, we killed germs, genes, diseases, you could tell the scientists apart the evil from the good, the mad
from the sane. It'd magical and insane people walking round with trillions others with 5 or 6.

My lab is a little messy I will admit that, but I don't mind it, finding a cure for this doesn't need tidiness, it needs energy,
cultivation, a sense of home away from home, that's what it was for me. I left that damn disease soaking in a few liquids
deciding to leave, walking home was always pleasant in the early hours, the silence was comfortable after all the thinking
45 minutes wasn't that anyways.

Walking in it took two seconds before the mystical numbers appeared and I realised finally I'D CURED THE COMMON

[– ] When the EXP Metre was first introduced in our country, the Moralist faction jumped right on it. Almost immediately, the
Moralists released a public statement that they approved of the device, and hoped that consciousness of loss of life would
render people “more conscientious in regard to the consequences of their actions.” Less than two hours later, the
Pragmatists, who took this as a snide remark directed at their own methods, also released a public statement accusing the
Moralists of disrupting the Party through their thinly-veiled denouncement, and warned them that if they did not cease
and desist, they would report them to the Inquisition for threatening the stability of the state.

I myself found all these intellectual factions themselves to be far more of a threat to the stability of the state and the Party
than any denouncements or devices, so I was unaffiliated -unaffiliated, that is, other than my allegiance to the Party itself,
of course. At any rate, the events which I am about to relate are in defence of my own actions, ascertaining that my choices
were entirely for the good of the state and that I resent the accusation of dissension.

The Moralists were not entirely wrong in their statement. Many people think very little of smashing an insect or hunting
animals, or even killing rebels, but the EXP Metre changed this somewhat. The Metre would only go up by one or two
points when smashing a bug, but over time, these points would accumulate. Most people don’t care, but some have been
known to be disturbed by it. Of course, on the flip side, I hear that some people believe that the higher the Metre counts,
the more powerful you become.

I don’t see that myself. I’ve been the lieutenant governor in my district ever since Governor Ephraim “appropriated” me
from my office downtown, and I take over as governor whenever he is not around, which is most of the time. I must say, in
such a polarised locale as mine, walking the middle ground has its price to pay. The Moralists and the Pragmatists have
both had their moments of anger towards me, sometimes violently. When that happens, I deal with them as the law
demands. My superiors and the Legalists don’t completely hate me as a result. What all this comes to, though, is that I’ve
seen my EXP Metre tick upwards as the years go by too, and I don’t feel any stronger. Sometimes I get a rush of
adrenaline, but I hardly think that’s any reason to go ballistic, figuratively or literally.

About a fortnight ago, I was sitting in my office after repeatedly kicking the hornet’s nest. It seemed a Moralist colleague of
mine convinced me that to be more direct and tell nothing but the absolute truth in my next speech to the masses. As it
turned out, that was a hilariously bad idea because the truth is not popular. After restoring order, I found that my EXP
Metre had gone up by almost 500 points. A bit taken aback by this sudden development, I rang for my Centurion, Titus.
While waiting for him, I looked past the many flags outside my office window at a distant statue of the Imperator, the
leader of the Party, and introspected. My sudden increase in EXP didn’t matter to me, no. Killing didn’t bother me if it was
in a just cause. But that was exactly it, my EXP increased dramatically that afternoon and I didn’t know why, so I had to
make certain that I hadn’t inadvertently committed a terrible crime before feeling bad or seeking absolution. When
Centurion Titus finally came up, I was about ready to throw something at him. I had learned my lesson, though, as the last
time I threw something at him, it was my globe and that was inordinately expensive to replace.

“Centurion!” I barked out, angrily. “Would you care to explain what’s happening out there?”

“Nothing now, my lord,” said Titus, proudly. “The mission has been completed. Order has been restored.”

“Why has my EXP Metre gone up by nearly 500 points in the past two hours?”

Before Centurion Titus could answer, my adjutant yelled the answer from his office: “If I may, my lord, I seem to
remember reading that the EXP Metre counts what people call ’assists’ as well. If you are not directly responsible for a
death, but only indirectly, you gain half the number of points.”

Suddenly I knew what had happened. I turned back to Centurion Titus and said: “Centurion, I told you to restore order,
not make a bloodbath!”

Centurion Titus was unfazed. “I did what I had to do, my lord.”

That ironic echo of my own words hit me like a dagger in my stomach. I paused, shook my head, and gave a long sigh as I
sat down at my desk again. “Explain yourself, Centurion.”

5/16/2017 [WP] You gain EXP for everything you kill and you know when you gain EXP. Easy kills like bugs get you only a couple of EXP, tougher kills give more EXP. …
“Certainly, my lord. You instructed me to restore order after that rousing speech of yours. The Cohortes Urbanae joined
forces with our men and we nearly did it when someone threw explosives at us. You may not have noticed from here, but
they set the town square on fire.”

“Oh. That’s what the smell was, then?”

“Yes, my lord. They’re still out there putting out the last of the fires now. But I digress; the mob had gotten violent. The
only way to stop them before they harmed the city more was through lethal force. Rest assured, we only had to kill about a
hundred of them before the rest saw reason and surrendered.”

“Oh no... Governor Ephraim is not going to be happy about this...”

“I understand, my lord, but it was necessary. The mob was well-armed. Someone supplied them with automatic weapons
and explosives. I advise that we get an investigation going. In addition, if I may be so bold...” Centurion Titus looked about
to see that no-one else was listening, “...the Governor only cares about presenting the Imperator with generous taxes. He
cares nothing for the people, only that corpses don’t pay taxes. My lord, do what is right and stick with the upstanding and
it’s hard to go wrong.”

At this point I had had enough and was unwilling to listen further. I decided to let it slide and dismissed the Centurion.

I could not have foreseen what was going to happen. Barely a day later, Inquisitor Obadiah came into my office and asked
me a simple, yet jarring question.

“Salve, Lieutenant Governor,” he said, calmly, without even bothering to sit down. “Where is Governor Ephraim?”

This question surprised me. “Ave, my lord. Uh, he told me that he was going to the Assembly up North when he left a few
days ago. Isn’t he there?”

“Forgive me, sir, but I am the one asking the questions here. I will not ask again. Where is Governor Ephraim?”

I was about to say that I knew nothing, but then I remembered Centurion Titus’ words. I had long nursed suspicions about
the Governor’s frequent trips and vacations. Perhaps, perhaps... ah, but he was out there, and the Inquisitor was right
here. The last thing I wanted was more trouble, so I rapidly spun my chair around, opened the filing-cabinet, and pulled
out the relevant document to the Governor’s latest trip. Handing it to the Inquisitor, I said: “He only told me what I just
told you now. This is my piece of the puzzle. It’s all I have.”

“Thank-you, Lieutenant Governor. Vale.”

As quickly as he came, he left. Mildly disgusted, I sipped my morning tea and wondered if many Inquisitors were taught to
keep their manners. Oh well, I thought. Mustn’t judge them too harshly, they’re very busy people.

A few days later, a little less than a week ago, however, I returned home to my wife and children after work, and no sooner
had I sat down on the couch when I felt a surge of adrenaline so strong that I gasped and fell to the floor. My wife, Lucidia,
dropped her pot in alarm and rushed to help me up. I was not frail like the noodles we had just lost, though, so I was up in
a few seconds. After thanking her for her help and assuring her I was alright, I looked with shock at my EXP Metre, which
had risen a whopping 5000 points! I looked around frantically, trying to hide my alarm. One, two, three... no, all the
children were alive and well. Lucidia was hurt, but only her feelings, for she was still cleaning up the mess. Going to the
door of our house, I looked out. Everything appeared to be in place. Shrugging, I didn’t think any more of it. Not, that is,
until I finished helping Lucidia clean up and got back to the couch to turn on the television. The moment I saw the latest
news report, I gave a loud exclamation of surprise and shock. Lucidia rushed over to see what was happening. The state
news reported that Governor Ephraim had been executed by the Inquisition for treason and corruption. The report went
on to tell how Inquisitor Obadiah had exposed Ephraim’s operations, proving that he had employed the gangs and rebels
in the district, arming them and allowing them to operate in return for a share of the profits. He would then sink many of
those profits into the most expensive commodities to buy political favours, live well, and give the district the appearance of
prosperity. Furthermore, he also used his authority to execute anyone who came close to uncovering him under false
charges. It was then that I realised what had truly happened. Governor Ephraim was not incompetent or lazy, he was a
cold-blooded monster. He picked me out not because of my loyalty to the Party or because he thought I’d do a good job,
but because I’d be an oblivious simpleton who would run things so he could continue undisturbed.

As I felt the anger rising to my head, Lucidia put her hands on my shoulder and said: “Well... my dear Governor Joshua...
what are you going to do?”

I straightened up. “I’m going to do right and fix this mess of a district. But first, I’m going to pin a medal on that Centurion
Titus. He did what was demanded of him, and he knew that there was dirty work afoot. He is a model citizen, exactly the
kind we should all strive to be.”

[– ] 'Welp, that's that then.'

Zaraso dismissively contemplated as he sunk further back into wooden chair and glumly watched the green numbers on
his EXP Counter tumble upwards. It was like watching one of those bill counting machines.

Zaraso's wasn't really all that happy. He should have been, he had spent the last 10 years working towards precisely this
moment. He had spent 30 years trying to one up everyone in his village by killing everything. He had killed countless rats,
untold deer and, on one occasion, he had added a freaking grizzly to his list. But he had still been miles behind the old
timers, those old farts who had fought in the war. Zaraso knew there was no competing with that- at least not in the usual
way.

So Zaraso had gone up into the mountain and woed to return only when he had claimed the most elusive of prizes. There
had been countless before that had sought this kill, but all had failed. Zaraso was determined; there was no stopping him.

'It really is beautiful, or it would have been if it wasn't all so....underwhelming.'

Zaraos exhaled in exhausted, deflated triumph. It had taken him 10 years, but he had finally done it. He eyed the final
resting number: 7400 XP. His mind was went buzzing with mental calculations.

'So: a rat was worth a couple XP, monkeys had earned him 150 XP, and killing that grizzly sent his counter up by 800. And
this kill that required 10 years of constant mental chess playing, that had cost him all his relationships, that had very
nearly cost him his sanity.... was only worth 1500XP?!'

He collected his walking stick, wrapped his tattered shawl around his shoulders, said his goodbyes to his good friends:
eagle and snake, took a double take on his odd choice of companions and started making his way down the mountain.

He wondered how his village was going to respond to god being dead. But more so he was concerned about the cruel,
messed up algorithm The Counter was operating on.

[– ] Lily lie on her bed staring at the ceiling. Today was Peace Day, the one time a year when killing was illegal. It mostly
existed to pacify those who opposed the kill-all system.

She sighed. Her own exp bar was semi-decent. No matter how you lived, you always killed something. Stepping on ants,
accidentally hitting an animal with your car, hunting for survival; it happened.

Lily rolled over. She didn't particularly like this world, but that's the world she knew. Much like magic in the storybooks of
her childhood, it was something rarely given more than a passing thought.

But still...

She sat up and walked out of her small dilapidated house. Kill counts were the respect of everyone these days. Buying
property was one of the perks of that. It became kind of lie the new credit score.

Outside, couple walked with children in happiness. Dogs and their owners played fetch in the streets. Teens having fun
drove by in their banged up cars. Lone individuals, much like Lily, walked calmly without looking over their shoulders.
Lily joined them and meandered down the street. Without the tension in the air the green of the sparse trees seemed
barren and even the broken bottles on the sidewalk cast glitters about the road.

In front of Lily, another woman her age walked alone. Lily had seen her around before. She lived a block over. Quiet. A
gardener. Those were the two defining characteristics she knew her by. That's how it was here, "did you hear that the car
guy died last week?" "What about the woman who liked red?"

Lily examined her. She wore a loose blue dress that fell just below her knees. A brown satchel hung at her side with some
wildflowers poking out. Her ugly brown hair was done up in a loose bun. All in all, she looked normal. But to Lily, she was
beautiful. She was Lily, so normal and plain, yet still here. Unwilling or not able as of yet to be with someone, she lived her
days in seclusion. Every step the woman took, the beaded laces on her boots bounced, making a light clicking sound to
anyone who cared to listen.

Left, right, left, right. Click, click, click. The crunching sound of gravel under her boots mixed with the clicking as she
began to cross the street. At the same time, a teen couple making out in their white car rounded the corner. The circling of
lips, the clicking of steps. The pattering of Lily's own shoes on the pavement. The shuffle as the woman turned slowly, the
car barreling towards her. Her clicking slowing down. Lily's manic stomps. Squealing of rubber. Stomping.

Silence.

Just before the impact, the stomping met with the nearly-ceased clicking. The sound of smacking of skin against fabric.
Lily didn't care. The woman, the beautiful survivor, had to live!

Without enough force behind her strike, the woman tumbled directly into the car. The sound of splintering bone and
thuds of a human body shrieked with the roar of the car.

Silence.

She held the woman's hand, trembling. A click-clack and a stirring. A parting smile.

"It seems my old life has finally caught up with me."

She drooped and the clicking forever stopped. Lily stood, everyone around her string, murmuring. Death couldn't happen
today. It was forbidden.

And yet...

Lily looked at the counter for her exp in the corner of her eye, 1500 points slowly being added to the paltry 147. She
continued to watch it climb.

[– ] The gigantic claw narrowly misses my spine. I dive behind the cover of a tree. Moments later, the tree is ripped from its
roots and sent sailing toward the sun. A roar echoes in my ears, but I’m already running. Around rocks and down slopes,
with the creature in pursuit. Finally, I reach the edge a cliff. The drop is so steep that I can barely make out the individual
trees on the distant ground below. The stomping and trampling in the foliage behind me grows louder. I turn to face the
footsteps. The heels of my feet hang over the cliff’s edge. I take a deep breath.

Seconds later, the creature bursts through the dense jungle and finds nothing. It hesitates for a moment, before returning
in the direction it came from. I breathe a huge sigh of relief. The vine that I suspend from trembles violently. I barely
manage to pull myself back onto the edge of the cliff before it snaps and falls away. As my adrenaline recedes, I lie there
for a minute or two, thanking my lucky stars. Then I get to my feet and make my way back to the cavern I call home.

Along the way, I inspect the traps I’ve prepared in anticipation for tonight’s dinner. The reddening sky produces a softer
light that provides an almost peaceful feel to the place where I had just barely survived. Leaves rustle lightly from the
gentle breeze. Every step in the direction my abode seems easier now. A jovial mood fills my soul as I amble along with the
collected corpses that will serve me as sustenance.

I recline in incredible contentment along the slabs that line my cavern. A blazing fire and a full belly. But I also notice a
different sensation mixed in, one that I don’t truly understand. Loneliness, perhaps? It’s been many moons since I’ve seen
another of my kind. That’s not quite it though, I’ve gotten used to the solitary lifestyle. Anyone else would merely be a
burden. Maybe it’s something larger.

Suddenly, I feel an unbelievable surge of energy flowing through my bones. Blue flames emit from my body, rise toward
the ceiling, then disappear. Every breath becomes deeper. Each movement carries more power than I’ve ever experienced.
As soon as it hits me, I dart out the mouth of the cave. Fear seeps past my hardened exterior and drips into my chest. After
scrambling over boulders and through a thicket of trees, I discover the source of my instantaneous strength.

At the base of the swamp below me, an enormous claw protrudes from the marsh. My suspicions are confirmed.
Unceremoniously, I trudge back, steeling myself for what’s to come. A long time ago, I had set a trip line along the border
of this toxic wasteland. I never imagined that it would snare a dragon.

Dragons were extremely dangerous, to be sure, but that wasn’t the reason why I did my absolute best to avoid slaying one.
Although they live independently, their species shares some sort of special connection that alerts them whenever an
individual’s blood is shed. In my younger days, I frequently watched from cover as lethal monsters sparred, in order to
learn their characteristics and tendencies. Without fail, win or lose, anytime a creature lands a critical strike scarring the
scales of a dragon, the legion would arrive that same night. If the dragon died, they mercilessly shredded the murderer. If

the dragon survived with the wound, they would decapitate their own in order to eliminate any indication of weakness
within their ranks.

When I return home, only charred ashes remain of the fire. That flame, that dinner, that sense of pseudo-loneliness all
belong to the past. There is only one thing that matters to me now. Survival.

On the back wall of my abode, a giant battle axe is mounted. The only remnant of my lost tribe. I kneel before it and
invoke the blessings and protection of every higher entity I can came up with. Then I rise. In my entire life, not once have I
been able to lift the axe from its place on the wall. Long ago, I had dismissed the very notion. Now, I knew with certainty
that the time had come. I lifted it easily, like plucking a blade of grass. It felt perfect. The spirits of my ancestors
accompanying me into my final fight.

Axe in hand, I reach the mouth of my cave and stare into the night sky. It’s filled with wings.

[– ] It was an easy job. I could coast along at Steady Ed's Auto, go about my day, and spend my breaks grinding XP smashing
roaches by the dumpster with my breaker bar. Only a couple more levels to go before applying to State. I was never a good
test-taker, so I had to outrank people my age and let the intimidation factor do the rest. They didn't have to know how I
got there: one lousy point at a time.

well, it was supposed to be an easy job. Yet too many people ignored me, like I wasn't the professional. "I don't care if the
tires match, I only have money for one." "I know the rotors are almost gone, just replace the pads. I've got somewhere I
need to be; I can't wait for you to do the whole system." "My transmission's fine; I just came here for an oil change."

At first I thought I was actually helping people by pointing out everything I saw under the hood. I quickly figured out that
only a small part my job was turning wrenches. I was a salesman; my real job was to exploit the small fear that everyone
gets when their car starts making a noise they can't place. I'll make it seem like their two-year-old sedan will dematerialize
if they so much as take it off the lot for less than $500.

Well, not everyone wants to pay $500 for new oil. Some people get really mad about it, even. Some level 50s will wave
their scores in your face to try and show you that they'll get their way, or else. They used to scare me. I'm used to it now.
Three years of leather-clad weekend warriors telling me that I don't know how their engine works wears on you.

I used to take it out on the lug nuts, wrenching with all my might. Now I save it for the roaches. 249,250,251.... only a few
more weeks of this and I'm done.

Back from lunch, I found myself eye-to-chest with a level 53, the keys to his red Z06 sitting on the counter. "Full Synthetic.
No Extras." He barely made eye contact before walking to the coffee pot.

"Okay sir, I'll have it out as soon as I'm done with our free 50-point inspec-"

"Don't bother, kid. Just change the oil." Okay then. I grab the keys and ease Mr. 53's mid-life crisis into the garage.

The communication between me and the team is so rote that I barely even hear it. Bay 1 ready. Wipers on, off. Headlights
on, off. Left signal. Right Signal. Brakes. Going up.

The boys downstairs fire away. The oil's already draining as I get my clipboard, ready to pencil-whip the inspection. This
guy doesn't care, why should I? Lights - working. Brake pads - little wear. As I get to the rear, I notice a small bulge in the
sidewall of the driver's side tire. Looks like he hit a curb. I bet he doesn't give a shit. Tires - worn. Recommend
replacement. good condition.

15 minutes later, I hand off the keys, swipe the card and let Mr. 53 take his leave. As he walks out, Steady Ed taps me on
the shoulder.

"Slow day, Bill. Wanna take off early?"

"Sure, Ed. See you tomorrow."

I pack up and head out the back. Figure I'll use my extra time on the roaches.

252,253,254... What's that noise? 255, 256, 1757, 1758--

"Hey Bill? You still here? Come check this shit out!!" I hear Ed yell from the garage. I drop my wrench and rush to the
front, and in the distance I can see a red car in someone's yard, with the front end folded up against a telephone pole. Ed
lights a cigarette, chuckling.

"That idiot tried to race someone at the light, and his tire blew. Spun twice before he went off the road. I bet he was doing
80 or so when he hit that pole. Probably not walking away from that one, I reckon. Damn." "Hey Ed?" I mutter.

[– ] When you find out that you get EXP for every kill, it's not abnormal to become obsessed with the whole deal. Flies and
little insects that are in and around my house, sure that's fine. Hunting was a big thing for me for a while to. But at one
point, it wasn't enough. Started with a hitchhiker. Scraggly, rundown man who should've met his end a long time ago if life
was less cruel. No consequences, only benefits. Didn't have any tools so I stopped, got out and grabbed him. After jabbing
his eyes out, I began to repeatedly bash his head in with my car trunk. The EXP I received was fantastic. That was the
slippery slope that would lead me to continue this murder happy spree and I'd end up in prison. On technicalities and
lucky breaks, I got a short sentence. Nearing my release, I got stopped by a prison guard who asked to inspect me for
"contraband". After what was clearly an attempt of feeling me up, he pushed me over and began to take off my uniform.
"This will be quick" he said. Bubbling with fury, I reared back and attacked him to the point where it would no longer
classify as self defense. He was put in critical decision. When I got back to court, I was given it straight. The self defense
card, given the circumstances. could be used to get a minimal expansion to my sentence. However, if the guard died they
would have no choice but to regard the case as a murder charge. For 3 days, I stayed awake in my prison bed,
contemplating all the things I'd miss. Another anniversary. My child's graduation. My old colleague's funeral. I never was
a religious man but the aspects of my life forced me to believe that there was something out there, watching everyone.
Whoever or whatever that was, I prayed to it. I prayed for a sign, a turning of the tables. Something that would help me
out in this moment. And then my EXP rose...

Sigh

Another bug down, 1XP. Lovely, I'll never reach 10k, not at this rate. It started with the mice and rats, then the cats, fish.
It's a privilege to work at a slaughter house or deliver lethal injections. I never could do that, not intentionally. The look in
their eyes, the helplessness, betrayal, I cannot stand it. I document stuff, species that are near extinction, such as the
common rat, house spider, fly, bee, etc. It helps us understand the value of the kill, why some rats are more valuable than
others. Rare species have multiplier depending on the number of units left. White mouse used to be worth 2XP, now it's
200.

[– ] Tick... Tock... Tick... Tock...

As Timothy sat there rocking back and forth in his brown, tattered recliner counting the seconds until the 1 o'clock break.
His nine year old daughter Anna sat in front of him still in her teddy bear pajamas playing with her shopkins. He chuckled
under his breath as he wrapped his thick curly beard around his index finger. God bless Saturdays.

Hearing him chuckle she turned toward him and smiled as she tilted her head playfully. "Why are you smiling?"

"Oh... Never you mind. Just play with your toys, hun." He said, looking away toward the clock. I have him now. That son
of a... This is the last time he steals my soda from the fridge. All that vanilla extract... Oh boy. Last time Johnny does that
again. he chuckled again.

Tick... Tock... Tick... Tock...

He looked back at Anna smiling, a grin from ear to ear. "C'mon! What's so funny?" She insisted.

Suddenly, out of the corner of his eye he sees her experience bar skyrocket. "What the fuck?!" He shouted worriedly.

She flinched quietly as he gets up from his seat. "What, daddy?"

"Nothing... Nothing! I just forgot something in the kitchen. I'll be right back." Timothy hurriedly jumped from his chair to
the kitchen. He searched the shelves feverishly, grabbing the vanilla extract bottle.

In his hurry he neglected to notice Anna had followed him into the kitchen. Standing nervously be the waste basket he
brought out his phone and began texting Little Johnny, his coworker. "You there?"

No reply.

This isn't like him... He always texts me back at break time. He opened the half empty bottle of vanilla extract and took a
drink.

Salt. It was soy sauce!

Timothy turned around frantically, noticing his daughter digging in the trash can. "What... Did you do?" he said to her.
Johnny is alergic to soy sauce... Oh god. His face drained of color as a sinking feeling filled the pit of his stomach.

Anna looked up at her father, worry and fright had spread across his face. She pulled out, from the trash, a broken soy
sauce bottle. The plastic lid clearly cracked.

"Don't be mad... I broke the bottle... I found a new one though! I didn't..." her voice broke as she began to cry. She pointed
to the bottle in his hand. "I didn't mean to..."

"Shhh.... Shhh... It's okay, hun... Everything is going to be alright. Shhh..." He knelt down and embraced her.

Badoop!

Timothy looked at his phone. It was Little Johnny, he replied. "Sorry, dude. It's pretty hectic man! Boss man had to give
CPR to Janice in accounting. I guess she didn't make it. That's screwed up, man... Who puts soy sauce in a soda?"

Timothy knelt there, stunned, his daughter in one hand and phone in the other. Then, all at once he snapped out of it. A
sense of relief flooded him.

[– ] I was awoken by the blip. It was a familiar sound that I heard everyday at 10 PM which told me the amount of EXP I
earned that day. I despise these. You see, I am a vegetarian, and any time I earn more than 10 points, I can't feel anything
but guilt for killing innocent creatures. Also, in the age of modern technology where the brain beats the brawn, I think its
frivolous to gain EXP that only increases your muscle strength.

But right now, its 8 AM in Jakarta. The slight swishing sound of a ceiling fan and the constant clock ticks heighten my
anxiety and confusion. "1500 EXP", is what I heard. I was not ready for that. Maybe I misheard it. Yes, it has to be. This is
not the usual time, so I must still be groggy from not having enough sleep. I thought. But what if....gasp. I quickly got up
and ran towards my car. This is it. I crouched down with my nose directly in front of my brand new Mercedes-Benz
CLA250. An early celebration that I bought. Hmph I stood, with the front bumper of my car scratching the concrete
underneath. There was a mini earthquake when the car banged on the floor and I leaned on the wall shaking my whole
body in disbelief.

Buzz it was my phone. There were 12 text messages, multiple facebook notifications and an email. All of the messages were
of congratulations. Finally, I clicked on the envelop icon. It took a few seconds to load but there was a new email that had

[– ] The usual sensation washed over me, I had felt many times before. It was a rush of energy, dependent on how much EXP
you got. A number would pop into your head to let you know how much it was.

"1500.. my my."

I was in my living room when I felt it, it felt really good. I hadn't felt this much energy in a long time. I calmly walked over
to my couch and sat down, picking up the remote that lay on it. I aimed it up to my TV, and clicked the power button.

A few seconds of scrolling brought me to CNN, just as the 'Breaking news!' alert came up. Once the graphic went away, a
black male anchor came on and began to read the newest breaking news.

"Breaking news! CNN has learned that Senator Donahue of California, leader of the Americans for Economic Reform
Committee, was found dead in his Washington DC apartment. Senator Donahue was one of the key opponents against the
Americans for Prosperity act. Police have not yet determined a cause-"

That was all I needed to know. The plan was a bit ahead of schedule, but it was a pleasant surprise to say the least. It was a
pain to get him to drink that shot. I immediately pulled the cellphone out of my pocket, and dialed one of the contacts I
had saved.

"Hi, yes it's me. Go ahead and send some flowers to the widow with my personal condolences-"

I was cut off mid sentence by an another person entering the room and immediately talking. "President Grayson! The
press is pushing for a statement, what should we tell them?" It was my Vice President.

I stood up, buttoning my coat. "I'll handle it, don't worry." I said as I strode over to the door, VP in tow.

After all, what good president isn't persuasive?

[– ] It had been a long day. 8 hours climbing up and down ladders, my shoulders aching from holding my arms above my head
installing LED fixture retrofits in government buildings. If I had had a choice, I would have only done that for half a day
and spent the other half on something that kept my arms below shoulder level. But some group of Senators were making a
lot of noise about getting back into their offices, including one obnoxious guy from PEI who just had to get back onto the
hill ASAP. I guess he had had enough of walking the one or two blocks from the temporary offices nearby to go to
meetings, although he certainly needed it.

It didn't help that I had had to go back to the main floor yesterday to replace the safety cables on the fixtures that had been
installed earlier. Some fool at the factory had used the wrong sized ferule on the cables. The factory had only figured out
there was a problem when the guy's XP meter started showing an abnormal trend from a few near misses. Then one of the
first year apprentices had mixed up the bad batch of cables with the new ones, and I had to spend an hour sorting them
out while dodging furniture movers and decorators who were flustered about the US President's State visit.

At least I wasn't going to be on the hill for the next few days. The President had arrived earlier today, so the security had
shut down the renovations on the hill until his delegation had left. That left me with a few free days. I planned on spending
those days at home in front of the TV earning imaginary XP on my game console. Security was already insane all over the
city because of the visiting dignitaries. Only fools would be venturing out and risking becoming some XP points on some
Secret Serviceman's or Terrorist's XP meter. Maybe those groups saw XP as a good thing, but for us regular folks, big XP
gains were an indication we had messed up big time.

No, it was better sit in front of the tv and sit tight for a few days until things settled down. My plans for the immediate
future was to zone out watching the Sens play against the Bruins. Not my standard fare, but all my usual channels were
either focused on what the President would screw up next or had some terrible rerun. And I simply couldn't muster up the
energy to hunt through Netflix for something to watch or play a video game of any sort. Hopefully the game would be
more exciting than the last one....

....

"BONG!!!"

The loud sound woke me out of my hockey-induced nap. For a moment I had no idea where it came from, until I realized
there were digits floating in my vision. Not single or even pairs of digits either. It was four digits.

1500 XP

Shit! Somehow I had made an incredible fuckup while I was asleep. Something big that I had done, probably recently,
which had hurt or severely injured several people. Only thing was, what? I'd been installing lights and running electrical. If
I had fucked up the wiring and caused someone to be electrocuted, it would only be 70-80 points, max. I'd have had to
barbecue 20+ people after spilling gallons of water and not cleaning it up. Maybe it was the Prime Minister? Was he worth
1500? I would have thought it was more. So what had I done?

Before I had a chance to check my journal, the hockey game was interrupted by a special news bulletin.

"We interrupt this program to bring you a special announcement. A few minutes ago, as the current US President was
attending a Gala held in his honour at Parliament Hill, there was an incident involving an object falling from the ceiling
and falling onto a group of dignitaries, including President Trump. At this point it is unclear how many people are
injured, but it appears that President Trump or someone close to him was seriously injured. At this point there are
several emergency workers are on scene, and all nonessential personnel have been evacuated. We will keep you up to
date as more details become available..."

Quickly, I pulled up my journal, and there it was:

1500 XP earned as part of series of incidents and accidents which lead up to the death of US President Trump.

I don't think I'll be going back to the hill anytime soon...

I spent the day reading books, watching TV, and playing video games. I didn't get out of bed at all.

After hours of just sitting in bed, I got a notification on my phone. It was from the EXP App, which was an app that
recorded all of our kills. If you killed something small (like a bug), you would gain around 50 XP. If you killed a person,
you gained 600 XP. The experience points would give you buffs in real life, such as more strength, higher intelligence, and
more. After this app became a default app on all phones, the crime rate began to rise as more people wanted these amazing
benefits.

Anyway, the notification said that I gained 1500 XP. That confused me. How did I gain that much?

I looked at the log on the app, which was a list of when, where, and how I had gained XP. I looked at the most recent one.

" 4/13/17, 10:25 PM - 1500 XP Gained from killing time"

[– ] I could just feel it. The cold rush through the skull, the familiar pain. It was the most painful yet. But how could it be?
Dreading to know, I looked on my arm. 15 red cuts! I've never seen more than a few pink ones, barely penetrating the
body. I knew then what it means - my actions lead to killing 15 people. Only peoples' death is this shining red color. I've
seen it only once on Julia 10 years ago, but the intensity of this color, against your skin, is something you never forget.

How? I quickly turned the news - nothing. I tried to call Jake, but he didn't answered. 5 minutes later Jakes' wife called
me:

- John, is Jake there with you?

- No, why?

I heard her sobbing over the phone, trying to say something, but all I could understand was: "fire... studio.. leak", and then
the line disconnected.

I quickly came to the realization - the leak - a gas leak. And it all made sense - I'm so stupid! I've killed 15 people by
forgetting to turn off the stove back at the studio apartment, the one we rented as a interim office. F*ck, f*ck, f*ck!!! Jake
is dead, innocent people have died and it's all because of me!!!

I couldn't think straight, I couldn't breathe, I couldn't see in the mix of tears and madness. I don't know how I got there,
but the next thing I knew, I was in the police station, showing an officer my arm. I kept reiterating this story in my head,
so I wouldn't forget a thing. I deserve to be punished. I deserve jail. And the only way to insure it, is to tell the truth, the
whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

[– ] Initially there was outrage when the Purge/Exp system was implemented here in the States. But much like the outrage
when chancellor Trump started his 3rd term, it died down after a while. You see, the homeless population were starting to
become quite the burden. As many jobs were lost due to outsourcing to China and India, there was a massive influx of
people out of work and on the street. This caused problems such as higher crime rates and a genuine “aesthetic
displeasure” as the gold house put it. So, they developed a system where murder was legal, only if it benefitted the greater
good of the “commoners”. You were granted EXP for every successful hunt, and this lead to a higher social standing, better
quality mates, and even faster service at the new “mega hospitals”. But alas, the hunts lately have been few and far
between. I even thought I might not be lucky enough to have another one, until I saw him.

I noticed the vagabond week ago when I was performing my daily ritual of grabbing a coffee and scone from the local
Starbucks before work. Nowadays they stay hid in the dark alleys and culverts well, but I guess the half-eaten ham in the
dumpster was just too tantalising not to take. I’d imagine famine does that to a person.

As the days went on I stalked him like an “efficient” commoner does. Hunting has become a lot harder now than it was in
the early days. You don’t get ‘em just running up to you pleading for help anymore, oh no, you have to put in some work.
The “filthies” have become smarter, quieter, and slyer. But I'm smart too, and a soon as I saw him go for that ham, I knew
he could be baited.

Every morning I placed a large morsel of semi fresh food in that same dumpster, and every morning he would go for it. His
ragged form clumsily falling into the large metal bin and then just as gracefully clambering out. I followed him, and found
out where he was hiding.

Turns out it was the ideal place for me. I live just barely in the woods on the outskirts of a nice bustling little town. It’s
about 40 acres of nice treed secrecy, and I’d imagine in his mind, a perfect place for a filthy to set up shop. As I planned
for my special night, I mapped out roughly where his little jungle camp was, and where I’d enter the bush to flush him.
The west hand side was perfect, as it would send him running to exactly where I wanted, through my back yard.

He’s somewhere out here, I can smell him. As the light of the sun lazily dipped under the horizon, I felt an odd contrast to
my world. Everything around me was quiet and calm, but inside I felt a surge of chaotic energy. The feeling of adrenaline
coursing through me was deeply missed, it’s been too long since I hunted last. I made sure I had all the necessary tools and
attire. Lightweight boots for traction and speed, olive drab camouflage, a few roman candles to cause disorientation, and
my trusty bowie knife. I was set, and like a dog in the chute, that first sound of leaves crunching in the distance was my
starting bell.

Immediately I start sprinting towards the rustling. I had modified the candles so that I just needed to pull off a spark
inducing cap and it would light. As I was getting closer I could hear him start to run, and I pulled off the first cap. With
remarkable luck, the first ball of sparks just barely missed his head, the second one lit his mat of dirty hair ablaze. This
was getting more entertaining by the second. As I chase the burning man through the wilderness, I feel my foot wrench to
a halt. A sharp pain shoots up the outside of my right leg and my momentum throws me into the ground hard. The candle
continues to shoot balls of flame into the distance and in my daze, I see the small burning head of the man grow dimmer
in into the bush.

As I hastily get up I realize quickly that every step on my damaged ankle is excruciating, and the smell of burning hair is
quickly leaving my nostrils. A pang of panic hits and I know that if I have any chance of getting a kill, I need my shotgun. I
make a B line for my house and every step is causing me to get drunker and drunker with pain. By the time I crash open
my back door, my vision is a blur. As I reach for the gun rack behind the door I slip on a shoe and tumble down the stairs
into my dark basement. I hear a sharp crack and feel a white-hot pain shoot through my left arm. You’ve gotta be fucking
kidding me right? I blew it. I can’t believe I blew it. Just as I realize that my kill is lost and I desperately need to go to the
hospital, my EXP tracker sounds. The tiny beep snaps me out of my pain induced haze. I slowly realize what’s happened
and start laughing to myself. The laughing turns to tears and all I can manage to say is “thank Christ for bear traps” before
I pass out.
