Activity 1.2. Look for the short story The Necklace by Guy de
Maupassant and try to extract the elements of literature. List your answers
below.

1. Character/s:

Mathilde Loisel dreams of being rich and is self-conscious about her middle-class


status. She borrows Madame Forestier's necklace to wear to a ball but loses it, then
spends the next decade working to pay off the replacement, sacrificing her beauty
and youth.

Monsieur Loisel is Mathilde's husband and a government clerk. He procures the


invitation to the ball for Mathilde and helps to work off the debt for the necklace.

Madame Forestier is Mathilde's wealthy friend. She lends Mathilde the necklace and
later pityingly reveals that it was a fake.

3. Plot Summary:
Mathilde Loisel is the pretty and charming daughter of a family of modest means.
Her family is unable to afford a dowry and so she is married to  M. Loisel, a clerk who
works for the Ministry of Education. Because she is beautiful, Mathilde feels that she
has been short-changed in life: she is dismayed by the shabbiness of her apartment
and her humble maid, and she constantly dreams of luxurious apartments and lavish
dinners to escape the pedestrian reality of her own daily existence.
