A. Chapter 5 - The Production Process and Costs
1. Problem No 13 :
You are a manager for Herman Miller, a major manufacturer of office furniture.
You recently hired an economist to work with engineering and operations
experts to estimate the production function for a particular line of office chairs.
The report from these experts indicates that the relevant production function is
Q = 2(K) 1/2 (L) 1/2

where K represents capital equipment and L is labor. Your company has already
spent a total of $8,000 on the 9 units of capital equipment it owns. Due to
current economic conditions, the company does not have the flexibility needed
to acquire additional equipment. If workers at the firm are paid a competitive
wage of $120 per day and chairs can be sold for $400 each, what is your profit-
maximizing level of output and labor usage? What is your maximum profit?

Explain :
Dijelaskan dengan persamaan MPL = b Ka L b-1 , a = ½ dan b = ½
MPL = 2 (91/2) (L -1/2)
MPL = 6 (L -1/2)
Dengan harga jual per product $400 dan upah tenaga kerja $120
V MPL = P x 6 (L -1/2)
120 = 400 x 6 (L -1/2)

L = 14. 400

L = 400
Sehingga, penggunaan tenaga kerja untuk laba maksimal = 400 tenaga kerja.
Sedangkan untuk tingkat Produksi (Q), dengan persamaan Q = 2(K ) 1/2 (L ) 1/2
Q = 2(K) 1/2 (L) ½
= 2 (9) 1/2 (400) ½
= 2 (3) (20)
 = 120
Tingkat Produksi (Q) yang dapat memaksimalkan laba adalah sejumlah 120 unit
Dengan Modal sejumlah $8.000 maka keuntungan nya adalah TR - TC
TR = P x Q
= $400 x 120
= $48.000
π = TR – TC
= $48.000 - $8.000
= $40.000
2. Problem No 15 :
You are a manager at Glass Inc.—a mirror and window supplier. Recently, you
conducted a study of the production process for your single-side encapsulated
window. The results from the study are summarized in the following table, and
are based on the eight units of capital currently available at your plant. Each unit
of labor costs $60, each unit of capital is $20, and your encapsulated windows
sell for $12 each. Given this information, optimize your human resource and
production decisions. Do you anticipate earning a profit or a loss?

Dari tabel dapat terlihat untuk mendapatkan laba yang maksimal maka
kombinasinya adalah 5 Labour dengan 90 output atau 6 Labour dengan 95
Output.
Sedangkan kerugian terbesar akan terjadi jika kombinasinya adala 11 Labour
dengan 30 Output.

B. Chapter 6 - The Organization of the Firm

1. Problem No 11 :
During the beginning of the 21st century, the growth in computer sales declined
for the first time in almost two decades. As a result, PC makers dramatically
reduced their orders of computer chips from Intel and other vendors. Explain
why computer manufacturers such as Dell are likely to write relatively short
contracts for computer chips.

Explain :
Semakin lama kontrak, semakin sedikit fleksibilitas perusahaan manufaktur
komputer seperti Dell dalam memilih pemasok Chips komputer. Untuk produk
 chips komputer yang sudah mulai banyak produsennya beberapa pemasok lain
dapat memberikan tawaran dengan harga yang lebih rendah di masa mendatang.

2. Problem No 13 :
The manager of your company’s pension fund is compensated based entirely on
fund performance; he earned over $1.2 million last year. As a result, the fund is
contemplating a proposal to cap the compensation of fund managers at
$100,000. Provide an argument against the proposal.
Explain :
Keputusan pembatasan kompensasi kepada manajer pengelola dana harus
mempertimbangkan kinerja dan manajer tersebut. Apabila terdapat penurunan
pendapatan atau ferporma pada keuangan perusahaan hingga 10%, maka
keputusan tersebut mungkin bisa diambil. Insentif atau kompensasi bonus sangat
bergantung pada kinerja perusahan dan juga disisi lain dapat menjadi motivasi
dalam peningkatan ferpormance kinerja manajer.

3. Problem No 15 :
The Wall Street Journal reported that Juniper Networks, Inc.—a maker of
company network equipment—plans to offer its more than 1,000 employees the
opportunity to reprice their stock options. Juniper’s announcement comes at a
time when its stock price is down 90 percent, leaving many employees’ stock
options worthless. How do you think Juniper’s CEO justified repricing the
employees’ stock options to the shareholders?
Explain :
Karyawan Juniper Networks, Inc yang diberikan hak kepemilikan saham
memiliki kepentingan tersendiri terhadap permodalan perusahaannya, selain itu
opsi saham merupakan suatu investasi jangka panjang di mana nilai saham yang
ia dapatkan akan meningkat apabila nilai perusahaan juga meningkat. Untuk itu,
ia akan termotivasi untuk memberikan kontribusi terbaiknya demi meningkatkan
nilai perusahaan. Tidak hanya itu, pemberian saham menjadi bentuk
penghargaan atau reward oleh Juniper Networks, Inc kepada karyawan atas
kontribusi yang telah atau akan ia berikan. Dengan adanya penghargaan ini,

karyawan akan merasa terdorong untuk meningkatkan kinerja sehari-harinya di
perusahaan. Sehingga penurunan harga saham hingga 90% dapat juga menjadi
peluang dan motivasi dari perusahaan kepada karyawannya
