SET No.:...3.....
Time: 3 hrs Maximum Marks: 70

Note: Attempt questions from all sections as directed.

Section-A: Attempt any five questions out of six. Each question carries 06 marks.
[30 Marks]

1. In a bolt factory, the machines M1 , M2 , M3 manufacture respectively 20, 30, 50 per cent of
the total product. Of their outputs 3, 5, and 2 per cent are respectively defective bolts. One
bolt is drawn at random from the product and found to be defective. What is the probability
it was manufactured by machine M3 .

X e(tj−1)
2. If the moment generating of a random variable X is M (t) = . Find P (X = 2).
j=0
j!

3. The number of customers per day, Y, at a sales counter has been observed for a long period
of time and found to have mean 20 and standard deviation 2. The probability distribution of
Y is not known. What can be said of the probability that tomorrow Y will be greater than 16
but less than 24. Also find C such that P (|Y − 20| ≥ C) ≤ 0.09.

4. V ar(X) = E(X 2 ) − [E(X)]2 . Hence show that E(X 2 ) ≥ [E(X)]2 .

5. There are (2n + 1) tickets numbered 1 to (2n + 1). Three tickets are drawn at random. Find
the probability that the the numbers on the tickets drawn will be in arithmetic progression.

6. The joint pdf for the random variables X and Y are given by

k(x + y), 0 < x < 2, 0 < y < 2

fXY (x, y) =

0, otherwise

1
where k is a constant.

(a) Find the value of k. (2)

(b) Find the marginal pdf’s of X and Y

2
Section-B: Attempt any two questions out of three. Each question carries 10
marks. [20 Marks] .

7 a. A random variable X has probability density function

cx, if 0 < x < 2

f (x) =

0 otherwise

then for what value of c is f(x) a pdf of some random variable? What is the cdf X. Use the
cdf F(x) to compute P (1 < X < 2). (2+2+2)

7 .b For any three events A,B,C prove

P (ABC) ≤ P (AB) ≤ P (A + B) ≤ P (A + B + C) ≤ P (A) + P (B) + P (C). (4)

8 a. Suppose X and Y denote the proportions of two different types of components in a sample
from a mixture of chemicals used as an insecticide. Suppose X and Y have the joint density
function given by

2, 0 ≤ x ≤ 1, 0 ≤ y ≤ 1, 0 ≤ x + y ≤ 1

fXY (x, y) =

0, otherwise

Find P (X ≤ 12 , Y ≤ 12 ). (5)

8 b. What is the chance that a leap year selected at random contains 53 Sundays. (5)

9 a. A random variable X has the following probability distribution:

x 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
p(x) k 3k 5k 7k 9k 11k 13k 15k 17k

(i) Determine the value of k.

(ii) Find the cumulative distribution function of X (3+3)

9 b. For three events A,B,C such that P (A/C) ≥ P (B/C) and P (A/C) ≥ P (B/C), prove that
P (A) ≥ P (B). (4)

Section-C: Compulsory question [20 Marks]

10 a. The honor cards are discarded from two deck of cards and one card is drawn from each. Find
the expectation of the sum of the numbers selected.

heads. Find the cumulative distribution function of X.
