Section-A: Attempt any five questions out of six. Each question carries 06 marks. (30 marks)
1. Given that f (x) = k( 12 )x is the probability distribution of a random variable X that can take
values x = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, find k and an expression for the corresponding cumulative
probabilities. (6)
2. An unbiased die is thrown two independent times. Given that the first throw resulted in an
even number, find the probability that the sum obtained is eight. (6)
3. In a bolt factory, the machines M1 , M2 , M3 manufacture respectively 25, 35, 40 per cent of
the total product. Of their outputs 5, 4, and 2 per cent are respectively defective bolts. One
bolt is drawn at random from the product and found to be defective. What is the probability
it was manufactured by machine M3 . (6)

X 0 1 2
Section-B: Attempt any two questions out of three. Each question carries 10 marks. (20
marks)
7 a. A lot of 8 TV sets includes 3 that are defective. If 4 of the sets are chosen at random for
shipment to a hotel, how many defective sets can they expect? (5)
7 b. The number of customers per day, Y, at a sales counter has been observed for a long period
of time and found to have mean 20 and standard deviation 2. The probability distribution of
Y is not known. What can be said of the probability that tomorrow Y will be greater than 16
but less than 24. Also find C such that P (|Y − 20| ≥ C) ≤ 0.09. (5)
8 a. An urn contains n tickets numbered from 1 to n. If r tickets are drawn at random, find the
probability that a partcular set of k tickets is (i) always included (ii) always excluded. (5)
9 . The joint pdf for the random variables X and Y are given by
k(x + y), 0 < x < 2, 0 < y < 2
fXY (x, y) =
0, otherwise

where k is a constant.
10 a. The probability that a contractor will get a plumbing contract is 23 , and the probability that
he will not get an electric contract is 59 . If the probability of getting at least one contract is 49 ,
what is the probability that he will get both the contracts. (5)
10 b. A coin is tossed until a head appears. Find the expectation of the number of tosses. (5)
10 c. Let X be a continuous random variable with p.d.f. given below. Determine a and F(x).
ax, 0 ≤ x ≤ 1
a, 1 ≤ x ≤ 2,
f (x) =
−ax + 3a, 2 ≤ x ≤ 3,
0, 3 < x
(5)
10 d. Let X be a continuous random variable with density function whose probability density
function is given by
be−bx , if x > 0
f (x) =
0 otherwise
where b > 0. If mX (t) is the moment generating function of X, find mX (−6b). (5)
