this painting and write a balanced/objective critique or review. (40 points)

Spolarium. 19th century. Juan Luna

Answer:

The oil painting was created just over twenty-five years after Raden Saleh's
arrest of Prince Diponegoro in 1884. The painting depicts two fallen gladiators
being dragged into the Spoliarium, a storage area in the Roman Colosseum. The
artist primarily made use of warm colors for his art work, with reds being the
central color that attracts most attention.
The Spolarium depicts an incident during the Roman Empire where bloodied
gladiator bodies, drawn as slaves, are brutally dragged away by men. A cheering
crowd can be heard shouting for violence from the left side of the painting, while a
woman is bent to the right and deeply in despair. According to some art experts,
the Filipino people are the fallen gladiators that are dragged into the painting. The
men pulling them are symbolic of Spanish rule, they say. It is believed that the
woman crumpled on the right side is the Mother Country or the Inang Bayan
crying for the Philippines.
