Laboratory No.1: Environmental Concern and Engineering Solutions

I. Introduction

As population increases, millions of garbage coming from household and

industrial waste are thrown each year. People are also irresponsible in keeping

their waste without thinking its negative effect to our health and surroundings. Air

pollution, water pollution, and floods are just some of the problems we face. The

pollution caused by the garbage is the major problem that could result to major

health problems and economic issues. The more garbage pile it has, mosquitos

and other insects amass in place. It’s the main cause of bacterial diseases.

Moreover, dengue, malaria and other various diseases are also caused by it. To

reduce the amount of garbage, measures should be taken and communities

should strengthen the implementation of reducing garbage. People should take

actions and help one another to resolve this issue for the future generations to

come.

II. Picture
Figure1. The Philippines is looming with garbage problems despite the

passage of the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act or the Republic Act

(RA) 9003.

2007 first quarter data from the National Solid Waste Management Commission shows

that there are 677 open dumpsites, 343 controlled dumps, and 21 landfills in the

country. An additional 307 dump sites are subject for closure or rehabilitation plans but

without definite schedule for enforcement. About 215 additional landfills are being

proposed to be set up nationwide. About 1000 open and controlled dump sites exist in

the country. Prominent dumps all over the country can be found in Antipolo and

Montalban in Rizal; Baguio City; Calapan, Mindoro Oriental; Camen, Cagayan de Oro;

Mandurriao, Iloilo City; Obando, Bulacan; and San Pedro, Laguna.

III. Engineering Solution

There are no quick and easy solutions to the problems we face in connection

with our environment. Yes, every one of us know about the five R which we

called: refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose and lastly the recycle. But most of

the people didn’t do the proper waste. I suggest that we put a net under the
bridges or the stream because they are the most place where the people

throw the garbage, so I suggest to put a net so that the garbage must not flow

into the sea. If the garbage must bountiful we must call the National Solid

Waste Management Commission and they will take care of that.

IV. Conclusion

Earth is where humans and animals reside. Life wouldn’t function without the

necessities that the earth provides for us. The earth offers every primary

obligation that we need to survive. It provides water to drink and function, air

to breath and soil to grow vegetation. We should start making efforts to try

and save the earth. Saving earth is an activity which like a need of the hour. It

is essential to start thinking about ways to save the mother earth. Human has

always used the mother earth to fulfill our wants and gains. l So we need to

care our mother earth, so that we can maintain our mother earth beautiful and

smell goods.
