Lesson4

For 20 pts. Create a program/ project that would benefit the Indigenous Peoples. Include the
name of the program/ project and the details entailed. Explain why you made such program/
project. Be guided with the criteria presented below.
TAMAPAKAN MINING

I Conlene Pontejo from Carmen Agusan Del Norte, studied at Agusan del Sur State College of
Agriculture and Technology. I acknowledge that mining is essential in procuring materials that
sustain our daily lives not only for the raw materials it provides but also for its possible impacts
on our economy. This enhance resident’s quality of life, supports local businesses and schools,
and contributes tax revenue to local government. The mining industry also has standards and
safety protocols. However pursuing the Tampakan Mining project means the displacement of
the indigenous peoples who call Tampakan their home, the poisoning of the water resources in
the area, and irreparable damage to the environment.
The Tampakan mining project would clear around 3,935 hectares of rainforest and this will
affect the source of their water supply which comes from the river. Mining rock minerals like
gold, silver andcopper will expose toxic rich in sulfides. The chemical compound will pollute
their source of water no matter how safe their disposal procedures are. The project are also
coincides with several fault lines.
Hence, the disadvantages will not only affect IP families and other tampakan residents, but it
will affect the whole of Mindanao.

I acknowledge that there are methods to rehabilitate damaged landscapes and methods to
dispose of toxic waste, but the land can never be restored to its pristine condition.

In our modern society, mining contributes to our technological, economical, and material needs.
But the Tampakan Mining Project threatens the displacement of IPs, the razing of old-growth
forests, and the poisoning of rivers, where do we draw the line?

That’s why we say No to Tamapakan mining
