The event honors the recipients of the National Artists in the field of Architecture and its Allied Arts,
namely Juan Nakpil, Pablo Antonio, Leandro Locsin, Ildefonso Santos and Jose Ma. Zaragoza,
most of whom were past presidents, Gold Medal of Merit Awardees and Honorary Fellows of the
Institute.

2. What are their contributions in the country and to contemporary arts?

The rank and title of National Artist is conferred by means of a


Presidential Proclamation. It recognizes excellence in the fields of Music,
Dance, Theater, Visual Arts, Literature, Film and Broadcast Arts, and
Architecture or Allied Arts. artists play a role in presenting and educating the
public about our history and identity. Many artists are doing work, artist
collectives are thriving, and the market is strong. The discourse is higher. One
of the aims of PCAN is to consolidate and harness the resources of Philippine
contemporary art.”
3. How significant are their works in connection towards the progress of our culture in the
Philippines?
Because of the national artists, it shows everyone our culture, and the abilities or talents of
every Filipino citizen. FILIPINO artists play a role in presenting and educating the public
about our history and identity

Explain Filipino artists’ roles and identify their contribution to contemporary arts. (Give at

1.  Visual Arts
Benedicto Cabrera

Though colourful and meaningful his masterpieces are, the National Artist for Visual Arts
Benedicto Cabrera, or BenCab, dreams of leaving a legacy not only of them but of his prized
collection of Philippine contemporary art and ethnography. “This is why I put up the BenCab
Museum, to house this collection so it can be shared for generations to come,” says the award-
winning artist. Established in 2009, the museum in Baguio City has since been run and managed
by the BenCab Art Foundation, Inc, a non-stock organisation that supports activities related to the
arts and environment. “Visitors have been enjoying the collection [at the Museum] for 11 years
now. I can say that my legacy is pretty much established,” he says.

Fernando Amorsolo (1972)


This man is the country’s first ever National Artist. He is known for infusing lighting technique into
his works, making most of his designs bright and sunny. Amorsolo is best known for
his illuminated landscapes, which often portrayed traditional Filipino customs, culture, fiestas and
occupations. His pastoral works presented "an imagined sense of nationhood in counterpoint to
American colonial rule" and were important to the formation of Filipino national identity.

2. Literature

Sionil Jose

Sionil Jose is one of the most celebrated authors in the Philippines. He is best known for his
novels and short stories that depict class struggles in Filipino society. Among his most
notable works is The Rosales Saga, a five-novel series that paints a picture of 100 years of
Philippine history.

Carlos P. Romulo (1899-1985) was an author and the foremost diplomat of the Philippines.
He was the only Filipino journalist to win the Pulitzer Prize and the first Asian to serve as
president of the UN General Assembly (1949). He also gained prominence as America's most
trusted Asian spokesman.
3. Film and Broadcast Arts

Ryan Cayabyab

His musical output consists of several masses, award winning film and television scores, short
symphonic works, ten full-length Filipino musicals, a major opera, full length ballets, solo and
instrumental works, orchestrations of Filipino folk, popular and love songs, three one-man
(he provided all 16 voices) 

Francisco T. Mañosa

His contributions to the development of Philippine architecture led to his recognition as a


National Artist of the Philippines for Architecture in 2018. Although he was popularly known
as the architect of the Coconut Palace, his other notable works include the EDSA Shrine, the
Davao Pearl Farm, and Amanpulo resorts.

4.  Architecture, Design and Allied Arts

Pablo Sebero Antonio


Born at the turn of the century, National Artist for Architecture Pablo Sebero
Antonio pioneered modern Philippine architecture. His basic design is grounded on
simplicity, no clutter. The lines are clean and smooth, and where there are curves, these are
made integral to the structure.

Juan F. Nakpil

Juan F. Nakpil, architect, teacher and civic leader, is a pioneer and innovator in Philippine
architecture. In essence, Nakpil's greatest contribution is his belief that there is such a thing
as Philippine Architecture, espousing architecture reflective of Philippine traditions and
culture

Look for a person in your baranggay who is an artist in any form of art and answer the

1. What pushed you to do art?

He told me that as a painter, no one pushed him to paint, he said it was just a hobby, but
many were amazed at his work, and because people bought it, he began to become more
interested in painting.

2. What are the hindrances you faced in doing art?

He said he was short of time to paint because of household chores, and he lacked of painting
equipment.

3. Is doing art a career or a passion?


He said it was his passion since childhood

4. What are your contributions in our baranggay as an artist?

As an artist, he is the one who paints in the schools in our barangay, and he is also the one
who paints on our stage.
