Lesson FILIPINO ARTIST ROLES AND
CONTRIBUTIONS TO
CONTEMPORARY ARTS

INTRODUCTION

Good day dear student! How are the two weeks of learning at home? I hope you have
gained a lot from the lessons that we had for two weeks. We are now on the third week of
our lesson in Contemporary Arts. So, sit back and relax as you learn while having fun!

Contemporary art is the art of today which is produced by artists who are living in the
twenty-first century and is composed of a dynamic combination of materials, methods,
concepts, and subjects that challenge traditional boundaries and defy easy definition
because of its diverse and eclectic attributes. Despite the very lack of a uniform, organizing
principle, ideology, or ‘ism’, contemporary art can also provide us an opportunity to reflect on
contemporary society and the issues relevant to ourselves, and the world around us, giving
us a glimpse and partaking a part of a cultural dialogue that concerns larger contextual
frameworks such as personal and cultural identity, family, community, and nationality.

In your previous lesson, you learned about the various contemporary art forms and
their practices from the various regions as well as the various contemporary art forms in the
Philippines. This module will provide you with information and activities that will help you
understand the contributions and roles of Filipino artists in this generations flourishing of
contemporary arts.

Most Essential Learning Competency

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. explain Filipino artists’ roles and identify their contribution to contemporary arts;
2. research on various contemporary arts of the Filipino artists

Artists

Figure 1. THE ROLES OF ARTISTS

Artists manage and create a sense of community. There are many roles that
an artist fill. But, in provinces like here in Romblon, having local artists brings a sense of
pride to the community. It also sets examples for young people who might be considering
careers in arts. Artists support their communities by teaching arts and crafts.

Philippine Artists and their Contributions to Contemporary Arts

As arts in the country progresses, many exceptional Filipino artists emerge and
become well-known. Through their great artworks and their contributions to their specific
fields, these artists aid in promoting arts in and out of the Philippines. The government
recognizes their remarkable inputs in the development of Philippine Art. The Republic of the
Philippines through the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the
Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), and conferred by the President of the Philippines

NOTABLE FILIPINO ARTISTS AND THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS TO CONTEMPORARY

ARTS

ARTISTS IN THE FIELD OF VISUAL CONTRIBUTIONS

ARTS (PAINTING)

On May 30, 1892, declared as the first

National Artist in Painting in 1972 and the
so-called "Grand Old Man of Philippine
Art", was born in Paco, Manila. Lighting is
the most prominent element of Amorsolo’s
painting. Amorsolo used natural light in his
paintings and developed the backlighting
technique Chiaroscuro, which became
his artistic trademark and his greatest
contribution to Philippine painting. He was
a portrait artist and known painter of rural
(Wikipedia.com) Philippine landscapes. His significant
Fernando Amorsolo works are Planting Rice, Dalagang Bukid,
The Mestiza, and Maiden in a Stream,
among others.

He was a Filipino artist best known for his

abstract paintings. He was born on April
28, 1911 in Manila, Philippines and has
taught himself to paint. He is one of the
Thirteen Moderns, who paved the way to
art modernism in the Philippines.
Compared to classical paintings, his works
were more radical and more poetic. He
developed a new style of abstraction
through his use of fierce and striking
colors. His works proved that abstract
(Wikipedia.com) and non-traditional style of painting can
Hernando Ruiz Ocampo also result to nationalistic art. His major
works were Genesis, Calvary, Slum
Dwellers, Fiesta, and many more.
He popularly known as BenCab, is an
award-winning painter and printmaker
who was tagged as a master of the
Philippine contemporary art. Primarily
figurative, Cabrera's work often depicts
woman and occasionally men wrapped in
swirling, bundled fabrics and capes. The
most popular subject of his painting was
“Sabel”, the woman scavenger roaming
the streets of his hometown when he was
young. Sabel depicts poverty and
inequalities in the Philippine society. He
has been noted as "arguably the best-
(Wikipedia.com) selling painter of his generation of
Benedicto Cabrera Filipino artists." His major works were
Madonna with Objects (1991), Studies of
Sabel (1991), People Waiting (1989), The
Indifference (1988), and Waiting for the
Monsoon (1986).
He was considered as one of the
Philippines' most distinguished muralists.
He created enormous canvasses that
chronicled the mythical world of the
Filipino and its history, often seeking
inspiration from tradition, folklore, myths,
legends, and customs. Francisco painted
murals showing the historical past of the
Philippines. Most of his subjects depict the
life in his hometown and highlight the lives
of the farmers and fishermen. The
significant elements in Francisco’s
(Wikipedia.com) drawings were their lines and shapes that
Carlos “Botong” Francisco seem like cut-outs and their lush tropical
colors. Francisco is one of the so-called
“The Triumvirate” along with other
modernists Galo Ocampo and Victorio
Edades, who introduced modern art to the
country. His major works include Blood
Compact, The Martyrdom of Rizal,
Bayanihan, Sandugo, Portrait of Purita,
and First Mass at Limasawa.
He is one of the Thirteen Moderns, who
promoted modern arts in the country. He
was a neo-realist whose important
contribution to modern art was his
refinement of cubism in the Philippine
context. He indigenized cubism and
produced artworks showing local
temperament. Some of his major art
pieces are The Beggars, The Stairway,
The Ritual, The Survivor, Gadget I and II,
(Wikipedia.com)
Flight, Struggle, Peace, Bayanihan,
Cesar Legaspi
Façade, Ovary, Idols of the Third Eye,
among others.

ARTISTS IN THE FIELD OF VISUAL CONTRIBUTIONS

ARTS (SCULPTURE)
He was a master sculptor who introduced
classical sculpture in the country. His
works, though classical in style, are still
identifiable Filipino. He was known for
creating monuments and bust figures of
Philippine heroes like Andres Bonifacio
and Jose Rizal and Philippine presidents
like Manuel Quezon and Ramon
Magsaysay. He was the one who created
(Wikipedia.com) the UP Oblation, which became the
Guillermo Tolentino representation of the academic freedom of
the university.

He is the Father of Modern Philippine

Sculpture, and the youngest awardee to
receive ONA at 46 years old. Abueva has
helped shape the local sculpture scene
in the Philippines. A master in both
academic representational style and
modern abstract who made use of wide
range of materials in his works like different
types of hardwood, stones, and metals. He
was also the sculptor who started the
trend in mixing different materials, like
(Wikipedia.com)
metal and stone. Among his notable works
Napoleon Abueva
are Nine Muses, Kaganapan, Stations of
(January 26, 1930 – February 16, 2018)
the Cross, Sunburst, and The
Transfiguration. Some of his major works
include Kaganapan (1953), Kiss of
Judas (1955), Thirty Pieces of
Silver, The Transfiguration (1979).
Abueva introduced in 1951 of what he
referred to as “buoyant sculpture” —
sculpture meant to be appreciated from the
surface of a placid pool.

He is a visual artist from Sulu, who

articulated the Muslim culture and art in
the country. He preserved, promoted the
Philippine indigenous art through the use
of ethnic themes in his paintings and
sculptures like the Ukkil, Sarimanok, and
Naga. Imao empowered cultural groups to
take part in promoting equality and in
building a better society. His artworks
include murals like the industry Brass
Mural of the Philippine National Bank,
(Wikipedia.com) Industrial Mural of the Central Bank of the
Abdulmari Asia Imao Philippines, and the Mural Relief in
Filmmaking painted in the Manila City Hall.

ARTS (ARCHITECTURE)

Juan F. Nakpil, architect, teacher and

civic leader, is a pioneer and innovator in
Philippine architecture. In essence,
Nakpil’s greatest contribution is his belief
that there is such a thing as Philippine
Architecture, espousing architecture
reflective of Philippine traditions and
culture. It is also largely due to his
zealous representation and efforts that
private Filipino architects and engineers,
by law, are now able to participate in the
design and execution of government
projects. He has integrated strength,
function, and beauty in the buildings that
are the country’s heritage today. He
designed the 1937 International
Eucharistic Congress altar and rebuilt and
enlarged the Quiapo Church in 1930
adding a dome and a second belfry to the
(Wikipedia.com) original design.
Juan F. Nakpil Among others, Nakpil’s major works are
May 26, 1899-May 7, 1986 the Geronimo de los Reyes
Building,Magsaysay Building, Rizal
Theater, Capitol Theater, Captain Pepe
Building, Manila Jockey Club, Rufino
Building, Philippine Village Hotel,
University of the Philippines
Administration and University Library, and
the reconstructed Rizal house in
Calamba, Laguna.

He pioneered the Modern Philippine

architecture. A prominent feature of his
designs is the use of natural light and
cross ventilation. According to Antonio,
buildings should be planned with austerity
in mind and its stability forever as the aim
of true architecture; that buildings must be
progressive, simple in design but
dignified, true to a purpose without
resorting to an applied set of aesthetics
and should eternally recreate truth.
Antonio’s major works include the
(Wikipedia.com) following: Far Eastern University
Pablo S. Antonio Administration and Science buildings;
Manila Polo Club; Ideal Theater;Lyric
(January 25, 1902 – June 14, 1975)
Theater; Galaxy Theater; Capitan Luis
Gonzaga Building; Boulevard-Alhambra
(now Bel-Air) apartments; Ramon Roces
Publications Building (now Guzman
Institute of Electronics).

His designs usually feature themes of

floating volume and a mix of both
eastern and western aesthetics.
He reshaped the urban landscape with a
distinctive architecture reflective of
Philippine Art and Culture. He believes
that the true Philippine Architecture is “the
product of two great streams of culture,
the oriental and the occidental… to
produce a new object of profound
harmony.”
From 1955 to 1994, Locsin has produced
75 residences and 88 buildings, including
11 churches and chapels, 23 public
(Wikipedia.com) buildings, 48 commercial buildings, six
Leandro V. Locsin major hotels, and an airport terminal
(August 15, 1928 – November 15, 1994) building.
Locsin’s largest single work is the Istana
Nurul Iman, the palace of the Sultan of
Brunei, which has a floor area of 2.2
million square feet. The CCP Complex
itself is a virtual Locsin Complex with all
five buildings designed by him — the
Cultural Center of the Philippines, Folk
Arts Theater, Philippine International
Convention Center, Philcite and The
Westin Hotel (now Sofitel Philippine
Plaza).

Santos pioneered landscape architecture-

an allied field of architecture in the
Philippines. His work in the Makati
Commercial Center incorporated
fountains, sculptures and landscapes to a
shopping area.
His works included hundreds of parks,
plazas, gardens, and a wide range of
outdoor settings that have enhanced
contemporary Filipino life.
Santos, Jr., who grew up in Malabon,
made his first mark with the Makati
Commercial Center where he introduced
(Wikipedia.com) a new concept of outdoor shopping with
Ildefonso P. Santos landscaped walks, fountains and
(September 5, 1929 – January 29, 2014) sculptures as accents. Santos, Jr.’s
contribution to modern Filipino landscape
architecture was the seminal public
landscape in Paco Park.
Santos, Jr.’s most recent projects were
the Tagaytay Highland Resort, the Mt.
Malarayat Golf and Country Clubin Lipa,
Batangas, and the Orchard Golf and
Country Club in Imus, Cavite.
