RECAP
Previously, the following are the Elements of Photography that were identified and
described:
• Light is the fundamental element of photography. It helps create the mood of
the photo, as well as bring emphasis to a subject.
• Color dictates the emotional impact and message of the photo.
• Composition is what is included in the frame. It helps grab the viewer’s
attention.
• Distance is how near or far the photographer is in relation to the subject.
• Lastly, moment is when all the elements come together in narrating a story
in the photograph.
LESSON
The 8 Elements of Film are plot, characters, point of view, theme, screenplay,
setting, sound, cinematography.
1. The plot is the sequence of events and story of the film. It can be presented in
three ways: linear, non-linear, and parallel.
• A linear plot has a beginning, middle, and end. It is told in chronological order
or in the order they happen.
• A non-linear plot tells the story in non-chronological order, such as jumping
through different timelines.
• A parallel plot follows multiple storylines that are connected through the
characters and/or events.
2. Characters are the people or personalities in the film. Their development, called
characterization, can be told through dialogue, the way they speak, their physical
appearance, their thoughts and feelings, the way they interact with other characters,
and their decisions.
• In the first person POV, the story is told through the eyes of a character,
usually the main one.
• In the second person POV, the narrator is speaking to the viewer or audience,
in which he/she often uses the pronoun “you”.
• Lastly, the third person POV has two types:
o The limited third person is when the narrator describes the stories only
through his/her perspective.
o With the omniscient third person, the narrator tells everything and
knows everything, including the other characters’ thoughts.
4. The theme is the main idea, subject, or message of the film. Examples of theme
are love, humanity vs. technology, friendship, family drama, good vs. evil, death,
perseverance, coming of age, justice, and revenge.
6. The setting is the time and place the story occurs. It has two types: integral setting
and backdrop setting.
• Integral setting is when the time and place are described in full detail. For
example, “in Tokyo, Japan in 1995”.
• Whereas backdrop setting is when the setting is unspecified. For example,
“once upon a time in a kingdom far, far away”.
7. Sound includes all dialogues and music. It greatly affects the mood of the film’s
scenes by enhancing and dictating the appropriate music for each.
8. Cinematography is how the film is done and told visually. It includes the camera
angles and movements, shot composition, focus, as well as the lighting.
