WHAT HAVE I LEARNED SO FAR?

1. Indie films or Independent films differ from mainstream movies in several reasons.
Mainstream movies are films that is being produced by large production companies while
Indie film is being produced by smaller production houses with low-budget films. Indie
films also produces short films, documentaries, experimental films, and animations without
capitalization. It also has a little support of audiences compared to mainstream movies
where it is being released in first-run theatres with a wider audiences and more chances of
promoting their movies.

2. The Philippine independent cinema takes place on the year 1977. Where Kidlat Tahimik,
a Baguio-based filmmaker with his work "Mababangong Bangungot (Perfurmed
Nightmare)" which made him won the International Critics' Prize in the Berlin Film
Festival. Meanwhile, through Executive Order No. 770 in 1982, the Experimental Cinema
of the Philippines (ECP) was created. Its objective is to promote the local film industry in
general. The ECP was successful in funding art films such as que Gallaga's Oro, Plata,
Mata and Ishmael Bernal's Himala. Meanwhile, the ECP vanished in the year 1986.

REFLECT UPON

Independent films are films which contents are inspired by life situations where everybody
can relate. If we see the difference between Indie films and Mainstream movies,
Mainstream movies is way more profitable. It's also why Mainstream movies are still
relevant because it is made not just to produce movies, but to gain profits as well. Now,
why is Independent films are being produced more rather than Mainstream movies?
Maybe because it has no other intentions other than to show and inspire viewers through
the story of the film. In addition, filmmakers has the control to how the whole filmmaking
process will run and how the story will prevail. Independent movies do not focus on what
and where they will get profit, but to whom they will deliver the message of the story and
how it will be able to connect to the viewers' heart. And to ther people, Independent films
are way more sincere in their general objectives.

WHAT HAVE I LEARNED SO FAR?

1.Works of Brillante Mendoza that has been continuously making waves in various
international film festivals: Masahista, Tirador, Serbis, Kinatay, and Thy Womb.

2. The works of Brillante Mendoza are often focused on the life of ordinary people stuck in
an extraordinary situations, in a setting where they fight against love, death and life.

WHAT HAVE I LEARNED SO FAR?

1. Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF), Sineng Pambansa, Cinema Rehiyon, CCP's
Cinemalaya, CinemaOne Originals Festival (C1 Originals), and CineFilpino.

2. Film festivals opens a platform for filmmakers to promote their work as well as the over
all content of the film. They are also responsible on observing and guiding the whole
filmmaking process. Through these film festivals, actors, directors, writers and every single
person that is involved and participated on the film project will we able to promote their
film and target a wide range of audiences.

REFLECT UPON

Yes, but not as professional and well-done to what we see on our televisions today. I've
watched a lot of people and short films on other platforms such as Youtbe and Facebook
done by nonprofessionals or unlicensed individuals. Which means everyone can make a
film as long as they have the medium to do it. It may not be produced by large companies
nor be watched on theaters, but still, they can exhibit it. It can either be a representation of
their life or the things they are interested to.
GENERALIZATION

1. Independent film or Indie films is a type of film that is being produced outside the major
film studio system, and is being produced by independent entertainment companies.
Independent films includes shorts films, documentaries, experimental films and animation.

2. Independent cinema is being produced by independent entertainment companies while

Mainstream movies are being produced by large production companies. Independent
cinema is also not profitable as much as Mainstream movies. While mainstream movies are
being patronized by large number of audience, Independent films tend to a much lower
rate of viewership status.
