Avant-Propos
MERRA-2, « The Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications, Version 2, NASA », sont des don-

SOLAR ENERGY
Outer space solar irradiation map
Solar radiation that reaches the upper limit of the atmosphere depends mainly on the inclination of the sun radiation
with respect to the equatorial plane and distributed according to geographical latitudes. Its value increases towards
the equator. This parameter is also used to predict the global solar radiation on the surface of the earth. Indeed the
same amount of solar energy intercepted by the earth sphere is spread over a larger area in the high latitudes than
at the equator. Therefore, the available energy per unit area decreases from the equator to the poles.
The solar constant represents the amount of solar energy that would be received, per unit of time, one square meter
of surface on the edge of the atmosphere at normal incidence. It varies from 1320 W/m2 to 1410 W/m2 according to
the eccentricity of the Earth’s orbit, its annual average is equal to 1368 W/m2.

Wind farm of Kabertene. The first ever wind power plant connected to the network in Algeria,
located in ADRAR with a rated capacity of 10.2MW, SKTM .
WIND ENERGY
Preface
A better knowledge of the wind potential that can be exploited for energy production is an important step before any
wind farm installation and is therefore a prior to reach the objectives set for any wind program.
As the wind is characterized by its temporal and spatial variability, different statistical and technical methods in data
extrapolation are then applied for the wind resource assessment and the atlases establishment.
The different wind maps presented in this document were established using meteorological data in terms of tri-hour
wind speeds, collected during a decade over more than 70 measurement points. These maps are used to quantify the
local accumulation of wind in the different regions.
Avant-Propos

GEOTHERMAL ENERGY
Preface
Algeria, with more than 240 hot springs, has a high potential for geothermal energy resources. A cartographic repre-
sentation of the geothermal resources available on the national territory makes it possible to visualize and evaluate
the exploitable potential of this resource. This atlas presents inventory and temperature maps of the main geother-
mal resources of Algeria. It also provides maps of geothermal gradient, thermal conductivity, and heat flux. These
maps are based on oil drilling temperature data.
This document provides a valuable tool for assessing and supporting decision making for the exploitation of the geo-
thermal fields available in Algeria.
Avant-Propos

BIOMASS ENERGY
Preface
Bioenergy is based on the conversion of raw material in the form of biomass or waste into energy (heat, electricity,
fuel). There are four main modes of conversion: thermal, thermochemical, chemical and biochemical. The biomass
used in these processes could be provided from a multitude of renewable sources: lignocellulosic, agro-food waste,
sludge from wastewater treatment plants, municipal waste...
Avant-Propos
