EXPO 2020
Welcome to
Tire Technology
Expo 2020!
W e have quite a number of exhibitors who remember our first Tire Technology Expo held
in the South of France at a rather epic venue adjacent to the beach in Cannes. It was
and remains the home of the Cannes Film Festival, which of course each year attracts
the world’s most famous film stars and celebrities. With the Côte d’Azur sea sparkling
in the Mediterranean sunshine, a fabulous golden sandy beach to our left and superyachts to our right, it
was a great start. However, it was deemed too glamorous for the tire manufacturing industry. People politely
told me it sounded far too much like a jolly vacation destination than a place for the serious world of tire
design and manufacturing. What followed was a switch to Hamburg and various rotations into Cologne and
Stuttgart, followed by an eight-year term in Cologne before we headed north to Hannover, which has proved
to be our best destination so far.
During the years – 19 by reference to the calendar and 20 by reference to this being the 20th staging of
the event – Tire Technology Expo has grown to become the #1 event of its kind in Europe and probably the
world. It offers a unique combination of conferences and courses, an incredible array of exhibits that come
typically from 300 leading industry suppliers, plus the Gala Dinner and Tire Technology International Awards
for Innovation and Excellence, making for a truly all-embracing industry celebration. The event includes the
best in the business at both a scientific and a commercial level, and incorporates leading-edge suppliers
who are helping to push the frontiers of efficient and sustainable manufacturing using the latest chemicals
and materials and manufacturing innovations, which are all on show today. Tire Technology Expo is an event
that embraces knowledge sharing and contract signing in equal measure. Although this year’s preparations
have had a few extra challenges for us to deal with, it is always a great pleasure for the team and me to bring
this show together. With your support and participation I hope to see it arrive at its 40th anniversary in due
course. Sincere thanks to everyone who has contributed to the process so far.

SPLICE MEASURING
HF TireTech Group will launch the HF Q GUARD – which it claims sets
a new benchmark in precise splice measuring – at Tire Technology Expo
2020. The company says that HF Q GUARD also sets new benchmarks
in quality control and traceability in the tire production process, ensuring
tires are built to the highest quality and safety standards.
With this innovation, HF is anticipating market demand for the
highest quality; safety and the reduction of accidents caused by
defective tires; material and cost savings in the production process;
traceability in the production process and beyond; big data – the digital
twin of each tire delivers all the information needed; and less downtime
due to quick reactions and adjustments in the production process.
Don’t miss an exclusive live presentation of HF Q GUARD at 17:20,

Accurate and repeatable weighing of chemicals
and additives is crucial to tire production. To avoid
human error, Color Service has developed
a fully automatic dosing system that eliminates
manual weighing.
The system produces bags from a roll of EVA
film and marks them with all key information. It
then weighs and doses the chemicals into the bags
and seals them so that they can be delivered to
the mixer platform or directly to the mixers. All steps
are recorded and can be tracked through a digital

February 24, 25, 26, 2020
This course will be held concurrently with Tire Technology
Expo 2020 in Hannover, Germany, on February 24, 25, 26, 2020 –
commencing one day before the expo and main conference.
This course covers the computer modeling of tires within a full vehicle system. It is aimed at engineers and
researchers working in both industry and academia. The subject matter will be of primary interest to vehicle
dynamicists, for whom the tire is the primary force and moment generation element on the vehicle.
Tires are not especially complex but are deeply counterintuitive; practitioners require an understanding of tire
behavior and the range and capability of existing models in order to generate full system models to predict the
dynamic performance of a vehicle – both for comfort and for active safety.
The course will start with an overview of the force and moment characteristics generated in the tire contact patch,
progress through the way in which these are captured through laboratory testing, and complete with the empirical
models for usefully accurate representation. Aircraft tire models will also be covered, as will the development of
physical tire models to predict the interaction of the tire with road obstacles and terrain for durability analysis.

This course will be held concurrently with Tire Technology

commencing one day before the expo and main conference.
The course will be delivered by Lars Netsch of TÜV Süd, who has considerable knowledge of the
current tire regulations in Europe and beyond. These are particularly critical as tire labeling and new
type approval regulations are introduced. An indication of the future in terms of tire regulations will
be given, along with a brief outlook on the impact on tires of the EU’s chemical regulation, REACH.
