Tawassul is the topic for debate now days due to many groups in our religion .

Tawassul or Waseela
According to many scholars waseela is permissible . Waseela or Tawassul is divided
into four categories. They are
1.First type: To make Tawassul with names and attributes of Allah(‫)سبحانه وتعالى‬
Proof : Allah ( ‫ )سبحانه وتعالى‬says in his Qur’an

And to Allah belong the best names, so invoke Him by them. And leave [the company
of] those who practice deviation concerning His names. They will be recompensed for
what they have been doing.(Al-A’raf 7:180)

So [Solomon] smiled, amused at her speech, and said, "My Lord, enable me to be
grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to
do righteousness of which You approve. And admit me by Your mercy into [the ranks of]
Your righteous servants."(An-Naml 27:19)
This type is permissible
2.Second type:To make Tawassul to Allah() because of one having performed a
certain good deed
Such as the Muslim's saying: "O Allaah by my Eemaan in You, and my love for You, and
my following of Your Messenger, forgive me..." or his saying: "O Allaah I ask You by my
love for Muhammad (‫ )هللا صلى هللا عليه وسلم‬and my Eemaan in him, that you rescue me..."
From it is that the person supplicated and mentions an important pious act which he has
done, and in which he feared Allaah(‫)سبحان هللا تعالى‬, the One free of all imperfections, and
did in obedience to Him, hoping for His reward and fearing His punishment, and giving
precedence to pleasing Him and obeying him over everything else
This type of waseela is good and accepted by Allah himself
Those who say, “Our Lord, indeed we have believed, so forgive us our sins and protect
us from the punishment of the Fire,”( Aal-e-Imran 3:16)
3.Third type:. Seeking the means of nearness Allah (‫ )سبحانه وتعالى‬by the
supplication of righteous man
Proof: Anas ibn Maalik, radiyallaahu 'anhu53 narrates from 'Umar ibn al-Khattaab,
radiyallaahu 'anhu, that when the people suffered from drought he used to ask
al-'Abbaas ibn al-Muttalib to pray for rain for them. He used to say: "O Allaah we used to
request our Prophet () to supplicate to You for rain (natawassalu ilaika) and You would
bless us with rain. Now we ask the uncle of our Prophet to supplicate to You

(natawassalu ilaika), so grant us rain." What the saying of 'Umar (Inaa kunnaa
natawassalu ilaika binabiyyinaa wa inaa natawassalu ilaika bi'ammi nabiyyinaa) means
is: We used to go to our Prophet ‫ )صلى هللا عليه وسلم‬and ask him to supplicate for us, and
draw nearer to Allaah by means of his supplicating for us, and now that he ( ‫صلى هللا عليه‬
‫ )وسلم‬has passed on to the company of the highest Angels and it is not now possible for
him to supplicate for us, then now we go to the uncle of our Prophet (‫)صلى هللا عليه وسلم‬, al
'Abbaas, and ask him to supplicate for us. It certainly does not mean that they used to
supplicate saying: 'O Allaah, by the status of Your Prophet grant us rain' and then after
his (‫ )صلى هللا عليه وسلم‬death say: 'O Allaah by the status of al-'Abbaas grant us rain', since
this supplication is an innovation having no proof or basis in the Book or the Sunnah,
and it was not done by a single one of the Pious Predecessors, may Allaah the Most
High be pleased with them all,
Some scholars agree a 3rd type of Tawassul, This is unanimously accepted
4.Fouth type: grant us rain', since this supplication is an innovation having no
proof or basis in the Book or the Sunnah, and it was not done by a single one of
the Pious Predecessors, may Allaah the Most High be pleased with them all, as
will be dis cussed in more detail shortly, if Allaah wills.
This include prophets, deceased, saints etc. This type waseela is not accepted bsa mam
Ibne Taimiyya is not supporting this Waseelah from Pious Aulia AllahWe all are aware
that some individuals and organizations/Group are Making it issue of Shirk and accuse
all those taking this type of waseela as Mushin. (maaz Allah). This is c amvery strange
rather an issue of grief and bereavement that our Group mentality has taken us far
away from Islam. Those who consider Tawassul as shirk are on very weak wicket. Has
no Support at all not even from Ibne Taimmiya Rahimullah.(May Allah help us on
understanding and wisdom)(Centre for promotion of islamic dawah , Education peace
and human values(2015) p.38)
