ESTIMATION OF WEIGHTS OF CONSUMBALES AND
CARGO THROUGH EMPERICAL FORMULAE:
The following are the weights that we need to calculate for the cargo holds
spacing and estimations.
 Weight of the heavy fuel (Whfo)
 Weight of fresh water (Wfw)
 Weight of diesel oil (Wdo)
 Weight of lube oil (Wlo)
 Weight of bathing and washing water (Wbw)
 Weight of provision (Wprov)
 Weight of stores (Wstores)
 Weight of the crew and officers (Wcrew)
 Weight of the cargo (Wcargo)
1.WEIGHT OF THE HEAVY FUEL OIL:
Heavy fuel oil is the fuel for the most of the commercial vessels. It is denoted as
WHFO. The fuel oil releases energy to rotate the ship propeller or the alternator
by burning fuel inside the combustion chamber of the engine or to generate
steam inside the boiler.
WHFO = SFOC x BHP x time of voyage x constant addition of fuel
SFOC = 163.81 g/kW.hr
Constant addition of fuel = 1.5
Engine power = 8605 kW
Time of voyage = 19.73 days
WHFO = 1001.2 tons
2.WEIGHT OF THE FRESHWATER:
Freshwater is often required as coolants and for drinking purpose. We assume
that a person uses 10-20 litres a day. Since the voyage is 19.73 days, we get the
weight of the fresh water.
WFW = 8000 litres/1000 = 8 tons
3.WEIGHT OF THE BATHING AND WASHING WATER:
It is often considered as 60 litres per person per day. If we assume there are 20
crew and the voyage as 19.73 days, we require 24000 litres. On converting to
tonnes,
WBW = 24 tons
4.WEIGHT OF THE DIESEL OIL:
Diesel oil is required for the combustion and other machinery purpose. It is
approximated as 30 percent of the weight of the heavy fuel oil tank.
WDO = 0.3WHFO
WDO = 300.36 tons
5.PROVISION WEIGHT:
It is utilized on the behalf of luggage or the belongings of the crew. On an
average, 6 kgs per person is allocated. For officers, it increases to 8 kgs. If we
assume 15 crew and 5 officers, Total weight of the provisions is 0.13 tons.
Wprov = 0.13 tons
6.WEIGHT OF LUBE OIL:
Lubricating oil is given by the same formula that of the heavy fuel oil with
different SLOC. SLOC is given as 0.95 for lubricating oil.
WLO = 5.8 tons
7.WEIGHT OF STORES:
It is the summation of all the weights stated above and collectively considered
as the weight of stores.
Wstores = 1339.49 tons
8.WEIGHT OF CREW:
On an average, if we assume that each one weigh 90 kgs, the total weight would
be 1.8 tons.
Wcrew = 1.8 tons
9.WEIGHT OF THE CARGO:
The leftover weight is allocated to the cargo.
Wcargo = DWT - Wstores - Wcrew
Wcargo = 61658.71 tons
TANKS AND CARGO Weight in tons
Heavy fuel oil 1001.2
Diesel oil 300.36
Freshwater 8
Bathing and washing water 24
Provision weight 0.13
Lube oil 5.8
Stores 1339.49
Crew 1.8
Cargo 61658.71

VOLUME ESTIMATIONS FOR THE CONSUMABLES:

1.HEAVY FUEL OIL:
Density = 0.99 T/m3 and safety margin = 3%
Volume = 1041.65 m3
2.DIESEL OIL:
Density = 0.9 T/m3 and safety margin = 3%
Volume = 343.74 m3
3.LUBE OIL:
Density = 0.9 T/m3 and safety margin = 3%
Volume = 6.63 m3
4.FRESHWATER:
Density = 1 T/m3 and safety margin = 3%
Volume = 8.24 m3
5.BATHING AND WASHING WATER:
