Each semester, the Education Undergraduate Society (EUS) hosts a variety of Professional
Development seminars for student teachers in the University of Lethbridge’s Faculty of
Education. This letter recognizes that Madison Rumjan has dedicated time to engage in
career-long professional learning (TQS #2) by attending the following PD sessions for the Spring
2021 semester:

Exploring Edwin: A new integrated teaching and learning platform from Nelson Education
On February 2, 2021, Sherri Ross and Beth Cormier presented an interactive session for
participants to explore how to use Nelson Education’s online platform, Edwin. Participants
expanded their understanding of how they can facilitate engaging lessons and assignments that
align with Math, Science, Social Studies and other subjects.

Hiring 101: Job Hunting as a Post Grad


On February 4, 2021, the former EUS president, Ben Beland, shared his experiences and offered
advice in looking for a full-time teaching job after graduating from the University of Lethbridge.
Ben’s session also included a question and answer portion for attendees.

Lessons I Learned in Prison about Teaching, Learning and Hope


On February 11, 2021, Dr. Chris Mattatall presented a motivational session on his experience in
teaching youth in prison. He explained the importance and impact teachers can have on their
students when they critically reflect on their assumptions, perceptions, and approaches to
teaching difficult students. Dr. Mattatall emphasized the fundamentals of building relationships
in the classroom when sharing his experiences in teaching.

Learning with Refugee Students


On February 23, 2021, Doug Checkley reflected on his doctoral thesis which focuses on how
teachers can best learn with refugee students who arrive in high schools. From his experiences,
Doug shared practical tips and considerations for how teachers can support and celebrate refugee
students.
Online Teaching Tools & Considerations
On March 2, 2021, Dr. Lorraine Beaudin offered an interactive session where participants
explored various roles, tools, and resources in web-based teaching. Attendees of this session
also participated in creating effective and engaging online lessons for students.

The PS III Professional Inquiry Project Symposium (Spring 2021)


On March 26, 2021, 17 intern teachers in their final professional semester at the University of
Lethbridge presented their processes and findings of their professional inquiry projects. This
semester’s symposium focused on the following topics:
● Indigenous content integration ● Wellness/mindfulness
● Multiculturalism and anti-racism ● Restorative pedagogy
● Increasing student engagement in literacy ● Classroom team building
● Increasing student engagement in numeracy ● Outdoor learning
● Resources for trauma ● Learning through dance
● The power of affirmation ● Critical thinking
● Large-scale interdisciplinary projects
