Currently, more than half of the world population occupies urban areas.

This
urban growth occurred expeditiously in the last centuries, leading to a lot of
complications to the environment and the residents. As a consequence of this fact,
there were some management difficulties, such as lack of potable water, bad planning
of the sewer, of the environment, life and public health. Aiming to provide a better
quality of life, in which the environment is also benefited, the UN elaborated the SDG
11. Our group chose the SDG 11 because it is more viable to make changes in a
shorter period of time (until 2030).
The urbanization of shanty towns is a project developed by the Municipal
Housing Secretary that aims the reformulation of irregular allotments, aggregating them
to the formal cities. As a result of this plan, it will be possible to provide the slum’s
inhabitants a better lifestyle, with the implementation of asphalted streets, the
installation of basic sanitation programs, the access to public services, apart from other
plans. The project has already accomplished some actions in the communities, such as
the implantation of potable water, sewage collection, and constructions that look out for
an environmental restoration and a land regularization of the local, as it is informed on
São Paulo’s City Hall official website.
Recently, the global warming has aggravated as a consequence of burning
fossil fuels (petroleum and coal for example) and also the use of automobiles that emit
greenhouse effect gases. After looking for a solution, Paulo Emílio de Miranda and his
lab team created a hybrid bus moved by hydrogen and electricity, that does not pollute
the environment, since it works from an electric motor fed by high pressure hydrogen
and batteries. The vehicle can go 300 km without supply and it has the same capacity
of an urban bus. The main setback of the project was to raise financial resources to
materialize the prototype. However, the crew is already designing a ship also moved by
hydrogen.
The project headed by the Metropolitan Transport Secretary entitled as PITU,
aims the urban integration through better public transport conditions in São Paulo, for
instance buses and subways. One of the biggest setbacks that this project has been
facing is the overcrowding of the public transports, caused by high demand. Apart from
that, the majority of the vehicles have a decent quality, containing air conditioner and
safety. Taking into account the facts, the project has still a big path to go through,
although it has overcome some obstacles.
All of the projects aim a better integration of the whole population, and given the
fact that this improvement is related to social issues, it will certainly need time and
funds. Therefore, the project with the highest viability will be the one that requires the
least of these features, and it also has benefits for everyone. When considered all of
these aspects, it is possible to conclude that the project, PITU is the most viable, since
it has already been started and is already showing improvements in the city of São
Paulo.
