PART I. INTERPRET AND SOLVE
Problem:
A tourism student with average height is longing for work as a flight attendant in
international airport aboard.

Interpretation:
Based on the situation there’s a tourism student has an average height longing
for a work as a flight attendant in international airport abroad but he need first to be
graduated in college and has a school diploma before he/she longing for a work and I
guess he/she won't be accepted the airport agency because he/she not graduated at
college

Solution:
First step in becoming a flight attendant is applying for a position with an airline. You'll
need to meet the airline's requirements for education and experience. You need to
complain all of the requirements. Flight attendant gives you a great opportunity to climb
a career ladder. Starting from a regular cabin crew member you could gain a Senior
Cabin Crew qualification as well as to become an Instructor for Cabin Crew training
afterwards. You could also change the airline from a small and less popular and move
to a large and widely known. The lifestyle of flight attendant destines you to always
meet new interesting and different people. In a result, you will make many friends all
around the world, some of them for life.
PART II. RESEARCH

Filipinos are known for tremendous hospitality, generosity, and different cultures
yet some cultural that are not in the good side. One of those cultural values is the
“Ningas cogon”. Ningas cogon from the Filipino word ningas meaning flare or burning
and Imperata cylindrica (also known as cogon grass or kunai grass) is a species of
perennial rhizomatous grass native to tropical and subtropical Asia, Micronesia,
Melanesia, Australia, Africa, and southern Europe. It is a highly flammable fire-adapted
species, and can spread rapidly by colonizing disturbed areas and encouraging more
frequent wildfires. The species is most commonly known in English as "cogon grass",
from Spanish cogón, from the Tagalog and Visayan kugon. The two words put together
is “flaming cogon grass”

Ningas Cogon (Lack of ambition/Initiative) is a Filipino trait that is characterized

by somebody who is very enthusiastic at the beginning. In the end, it will leave
unfinished. Ningas” is a noun which means flame, blaze or combustion, while “kugon” or
“cogon” is a grass which can be easily burned with its representation, the fast blazing of
cogon-, signifies Filipinos’ way of eagerness only at the beginning and immediate loss
of interest when it approaches its end which never happens. Just like a wildfire that was
easily extinguished.

Being “Ningas-Cogon” impedes our path in reaching our full potential. One of the
things this toxic trait affects is our progress. By exhibiting this kind of attitude, we cannot
ever establish the trust of important people, the people that play important roles in our
rise and fall our immediate supervisors at work, our teachers at school, our parents. In a
way, by being only driven for a short period of time when working on something, we are
also failing and betraying ourselves. Doing your best is always a requirement for
anything you do. Particularly on a job or any project and activities in school.

It is essential that you are at your best, and you can achieve that for a day. It’s
being consistent that is the challenge; being at your best on a daily basis. And to be at
your best, your mindset must follow as well. Performing in full capacity and maintaining
it are two different beasts. One thing is for sure, we need both. We need both to help
ourselves eliminate the “Ningas-cogon” that’s killing our success and keep that flame
burning.

According to Dr. Papa, A. (2019), "Procrastination or mañana habit and the

“ningas-kugon” syndrome are well-known characteristics that we Filipinos have inherited
from our colonizers".

In a study done by Bert Drona (2014), Ningas Cogon is said to be the result of a
lack of understanding of the root causes of the problems that arise during projects
leading to a lack of understanding in how to fix it, and, eventually, leading to leaving the
incomplete project as it is in order to avoid said problems. The problem may also be
rooted in the dependency of the Filipinos to others, such as in history when the
Americans had to liberate us from Spain after they had fought and even Japan
afterwards.

To summarize, Ningas Cogon is an attribution that has no place in the culture of

the Filipinos in that it may lead to discrimination towards us and our culture.

Negative effects of Ningas cogon in life.

You won’t be able to finish everything on time.
You will always be cramming and might have unwanted results and unbearable
mistakes because of hurrying.
You might become lazy and unreliable and people will see these as a hindrance
to connecting with you.
You’re bound to waste material, efforts, and time.

How to overcome Ningas Cogon Mentality?

Give and acknowledge more compliments and encouragements - this will keep
you from feeling hopeless and will give you the motivation to finish what you've
begun.
Avoid starting a goal/project if you know you know in yourself that you cannot
finish it.
Be aware of the consequences of ningas cogon mentality and reflect on these.
Ask help from somebody else, that way the work will be easier and there will be
lesser chances of not finishing it.
Make it a point that finishing what you started will reflect who you are and what
you have achieved.

Clippings of Ningas Cogon

“Senators hit Duterte admin's 'ningas-kugon' approach to pandemic”

Senators said the Philippine government's mismanagement of the coronavirus
pandemic has brought the country back to square one with the recent spike in cases.
Senator Nancy Binay slammed what she described as the "ningas-
kugon" approach of President Rodrigo Duterte’s administration to the COVID-19 crisis,
saying curfews and ordinances would be futile if government officials themselves are
violating protocols.
"'Wag sanang ningas-kugon – 'yung sa umpisa lang tayo masigasig, tapos
dedma na," said Binay in a statement on Monday, March 15. (Let's not resort to ningas-
kugon – where we work hard only in the beginning then become negligent later on.)

Examples of Ningas Cogon:

1. When there is a news article about a famous individual committing a crime. If
such an occurrence happens, the headlines can be seen in any newspaper, talk
show, and news channel. People all over the country are discussing, debating,
and arguing about the issue. Some people also spread rumors and gossip to
make the news scandal even worse. Politicians typically intervene to remind
people of their ability to settle the problem and pursue justice. Unfortunately, it is
just a matter of time before everybody loses interest, and the next major scandal
is just around the corner. Before you know it, the lawmakers have gone on to
other campaigns, and what was once a huge controversy has faded into the
background.
2. Your Instructor gave you an assignment that you were supposed to fix next
week; you didn't do it right away because you assumed it would be fixed the
following week; however, you had no idea how difficult the last part of your
assignment and you discovered it was a few days before the Deadline of the
assignment; therefore, you already started it but you didn`t finished it until you
still had time.
3. When it comes to finance, there are several instances where ningas cogon is
evident. A good example would be our savings and budgets. We are eager to
start sorting out our money by having a budget at the start of the day only to not
live up to it. We always say that we save money however we always wait for the
“right” time to begin with.
4. We owe someone money at first we are eager to pay the debt. However, as time
goes by, we lose interest in paying, resulting in interest and late fees that double
or even triple the original debt amount.
5. Every end of the year, each of us thinking of our New Year resolution one of this
is to go on diet and live a healthy life. An individual may pursue eating healthy
food and do some exercises for a month or so achieve the goal and then
eventually stop.
