Language Focus:
Past Perfect Simple

1. The past perfect tense shows that something occurred before another action or event in the past. It can
also show that something happened before a specific time or period of time in the past. Look at these
examples from the text:
a. In the 1900 Games in Paris, swimmers climbed a pole, before which they had crawled over
and swum under boats…
b. On 17 January, they reached the pole, only to find that a Norwegian party, led by Roald
Amundsen, had beaten them there.
