LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEETS in MATHEMATICS

Grade: Five Week: 4 Quarter: 1

I. Objective: Finds the common factors, GCF, common multiples and LCM of 2-4 numbers
using continuous division.

II. Presentation of the Lesson

Factors – are numbers we can multiply to get another number.

Common factors- are factors that are the same for two or more numbers

Greatest Common Factor (GCF) – the largest factor or divisor among the common factors
of the numbers

Multiple – is a number that can be divides by another number without remainder

Common Multiples – are numbers or multiples common to two or more numbers.

Least Common Multiple (LCM) - the smallest multiple common to two or more
numbers

A. FINDING THE COMMON FACTORS AND THE GREATEST COMMON FACTOR (GCF)

Mrs. Cruz has 30 erasers and 90 pencils. If she puts it into small packs
with the same number of erasers and pencils without leaving one. How
many packs can she have?

We need to solve for the GREATEST COMMOM FACTOR (GCF)

How do we solve the greatest common factor (GCF)?

In your previous years you learned about Listing method.

Let us list down all the factors of 30 and 90.

30 – 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 10, 15, 30

90 – 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 9, 10, 15, 18, 30, 45, 90

Common Factors – 1, 2, 5, 6, 10, 15 and 30

The Greatest Common Factor (GCF) of 30 and 90 is 30. Therefore Mrs. Cruz will have 30
small packs.

Another way of solving GCF is using CONTINUOUS DIVISION METHOD or the LADDER
METHOD. It is done with repeated division until all given numbers are not anymore
. divisible by one common divisor other than 1.

30 90 Write the numbers horizontally

Divide the numbers by a common prime number then write the quotient
2 30 90 below
5 15 45 Continue the process until there is no common prime divisor
3 3 9
1 3

2 X 5 X 3 = 30 Multiply the common divisors.

The Greatest Common Factor (GCF) of 30 and 90 is 30.

B. FINDING THE COMMON MULTIPLES AND LEAST COMMON MULTIPLE (LCM)

Christian and Kyle play with their action figures at Kevin’s house. Christian goes to
Kevin’s house every 5 days while Kyle goes there every 15 days. If both boys will go
to Kevin’s house today, after how many days will the two boys play at Kevin’s house
on the same day again?

➢ We need to solve for the LEAST COMMON MULTIPLE (LCM)

➢ To find the LCM we can use Continuous Division.
5 15 Write the numbers horizontally

Divide the numbers by a common prime number then write the quotient
5 5 15 below

3 1 3 Continue the process until you get 1 as quotient

1 1

5 x 3 = 15 Multiply the divisors to get the LCM.

The LCM of 5 and 15 is 15. Therefore, Christian and Kyle will go to Kevin’s
house after 15 days.
Example 2: What is the LCM of 8, 12, 20 and 24 using continuous
division method.

Divide the numbers by a common prime number then

2 8 12 20 24 write the quotient below
Continue the process until there is no common prime
2 4 6 10 12 divisor.

2 2 3 5 6 Continue dividing until you get 1 as quotient.

3 1 3 5 3 Note: If the given number is not divisible by the

5 1 1 5 1 prime divisor, bring it down.

1 1 1 1

REMEMBER:

➢ Continuous division is a process of solving for the GCF or LCM of a set of

numbers. It is done by repetitive division ( with common prime factors as divisor)
and multiplying all common divisors to get the GCF or LCM.
