DESCRIPTION
N-1250/PLUS in the sample reacts with ferric iron
in ELIMIN-OX™ Reagent 2 to produce ferrous ion
in an amount related to the N-1250/PLUS concen-
tration. This solution then reacts with ELIMIN-OX
Reagent 1, which forms a purple color with
ferrous iron.

SAMPLING
1. This is a low level test and is very susceptible to
contamination. Care must be taken to eliminate
sources of air dissolution and other interfering
species. A cooler equipped with a copper
cooling coil should NOT be used. Trace levels of
copper catalyze the reaction of N-1250/PLUS
and oxygen. As a result of copper contamin-
ation, any N-1250/PLUS present in the system
may be consumed prior to analysis.
2. Reaction glassware should be scrupulously
clean. For best results, isolate this glassware to
be used only for this test. If glassware is con-
taminated, it can be cleaned by rinsing with
1:1 HCl (460-S0726) followed by several iron-
free distilled water rinses. Hinckley and Schmitt
distilled water is acceptable for use.
3. Periodically clean the DR 900 sample cells with
a warm solution of distilled water containing
1.0 mL of Fe-4 (460-S0734) per 25 mL water.
After soaking, rinse the clean cells with a few
mL of 1:1 HCl (460-S0726) followed by at least
3 rinses with iron-free distilled water.
INTERFERENCES
Substances that reduce ferric iron (such as other
oxygen scavengers) can interfere. Substances that
strongly complex iron may also interfere. The fol-
lowing substances may interfere when present in
excess of the stated amount.

Light can also interfere with color development. Keep
reacted samples in a dark area during the waiting step.
Note: Any Ferrous iron will cause a positive interference
and can be blanked out by performing the procedure on
the sample, omitting Step 5. Subtract this result from the
sample’s N-1250/PLUS result to determine the sample’s true
N-1250/PLUS concentration. Do not use this iron blanking
procedure to quantify Fe+2.

Special Notes: Analyze sample as soon as it is collected. The temperature of the sample should be 72-82°F (22-28°C). Do
not use a copper-based sample cooler as copper interferes with this reaction. If the temperature of the sample is not in the
proper range, correct the result as follows:

Fill one sample cell to the
25 mL mark with sample.

be the blank.

ELIMIN-OX Reagent 1
Powder Pillow to each
sample cell. Swirl to mix.
Note: For accurate results
use pillows from the same
manufacturing lot.

Add exactly 0.5 mL ELIMIN-
OX Reagent 2 to each cell.
Mix. Place both cells in the
dark.
Note: A purple color will
slowly develop if N-1250
or N-1250 PLUS is
present.
Immediately start
TIMER 1
A 10-minute reaction period
will begin.
Notes: Both sample cells
must remain in the dark
during the 10-minute
period.
Temperature and reaction
time affect the results.
Be sure these factors are
controlled as described.
