New Mathematics Counts Sec 2: Chapter 2 Algebraic Fractions, Equations and Inequalities (Enrichment Worksheet 2)

Equations
You shall work in pairs, playing the role of your teacher and set questions for a class test on
equations.

Materials needed:

A stack of self-made cards (numbered from 2 to

12) to serve as a random number generator

Procedure
Step 1: Decide on the role (‘Judge’ or ‘Worker’) that each of you will be playing between
yourselves.

Step 2:‘Judge’ draws four cards to obtain four integers, a, b, c and d, such that:
1. Each integer lies between 2 to 12 (end values inclusive),
2. a ≠ c.

Working:

a = _____________ c = _____________

b =_____________ d =_____________

Step 3:‘Judge’ to form an equation, ax +b = cx + d using the values of a, b, c and d.

Working:

_______x + _______ = _______x + _______

Step 4:‘Worker’ to try out the equation to check whether it is workable. (Note that the answer
may be a fraction.)

Working:

Use the following space to solve the equation.

Step 5:‘Judge’ to verify answer by substituting the answer into the original equation.

Working:

Use the following space to verify the answer.

Step 6: Exchange roles and repeat Steps 1  5 until a list of ten questions are formed.

Step 7: Swop list of questions with that of your classmates’ for them to try the questions out as
a test.

DISCUSSION:

Notice that one of the conditions posed in Step 2 of the activity is that a  c. Why is it important
that a  c? What will happen if a = c?
