2. Define the following terms;

Culture- A culture is a way of life of a group of people--the behaviors, beliefs, values,


and symbols that they accept, generally without thinking about them, and that are passed
along by communication and imitation from one generation to the next. Culture is symbolic
communication.
Culture Is Everything- Culture is everything because in culture we have different
beliefs and traditions which is unique, Because that culture you can only see it in every
country or some ethnic tribes.
Material Culture- Material culture is defined as that segment of humankind's physical
world that has been purposely made or modified, consciously or unconsciously, by people
according to culturally dictated plans.
Nonmaterial Culture- Nonmaterial culture refers to the abstract ideas and ways of
thinking that make up a culture. Examples of nonmaterial culture include traffic laws, words,
and dress codes. Unlike material culture, nonmaterial culture is intangible.
Culture Is Learned- Cultural learning is the way a group of people or animals within
a society or culture tend to learn and pass on information. Learning styles are greatly
influenced by how a culture socializes with its children and young people.
Enculturation- Enculturation is the process by which people learn the dynamics of
their surrounding culture and acquire values and norms appropriate or necessary to that
culture and its worldviews. As part of this process, the influences that limit, direct, or shape
the individual include parents, other adults, and peers.
Acculturation- Acculturation is a process of social, psychological, and cultural change
that stems from the balancing of two cultures while adapting to the prevailing culture of the
society..
Deculturation- the process of divesting a tribe or people of their indigenous traits for
many native peoples brought involuntarily and reluctantly into contact with western
civilization, acculturation is all too often deculturation
Culture Is Shared- To be considered a cultural characteristic, a particular belief,
value, or practice must be shared by a significant portion of the society.

Culture Affects Biology- Neither culture nor biology is solely responsible for the
other. They interact in very complex ways, which biological anthropologists will be studying
for years to come.
Culture Is Adaptive- Culture is considered an adaptive mechanism because it
provides behavior patterns, strategies, and techniques aimed at helping people adapt in a
particular environment. ... While plants and animals adapt to their environment genetically,
for humans the most important adaptive mechanism is culture.
Culture Is Maladaptive- some groups find it difficult to adapt to certain culture
making it maladaptive. A hominid is any human, chimp, or gorilla in fossil or living form.
Culture Changes- Culture change is a term used in public policy making that
emphasizes the influence of cultural capital on individual and community behavior. It has
been sometimes called repositioning of culture, which means the reconstruction of the
cultural concept of a society.

Values of Anthropology:

 Anthropology broadens your horizon and changes your


perspectives.
 Anthropology is relevant.

Values of Sociology
 Sociology makes you a different person from the rest.
 Sociology helps us understand that individuality and in dependence are highly valued in
our society.
 As a discipline, Sociology involves the description and explanation of social structures
and processes
 Sociological research also reveals the multifaceted nature of social reality, its multiple
causes and multiple effects.
 By studying Sociology, we can become aware of underlying social dimensions in
political, economic and legal systems.
 Understanding social behavior and social processes are important in a democratic
country.
 Sociology tell us that health is a human right.
 Sociology tell us that religion and technology are also human forms of expressions.
 Sociology tell us that education contributes to the development of individual’s capacities
and for active participation in community life.
 Sociology provides valuable information about race and its impact to present

4. Explain the phrase, “Society and culture is a complex whole”.
Different societies have different cultures; however it is important
not to confuse the idea of culture with society. A culture represents
the beliefs and practices of a group, while society represents the
people who share those beliefs and practices. Neither society nor
culture could exist without the other.

ACTIVITY #2

1. As a student, how do you adapt to your environment? Give one


example on how you adapt to your environment?

I adapt in my environment by helping other people who is in need.


Meeting new friend is also my way adapting to my class, and also
socializing in group conversation helps me adapting to my class.

2. Culture was not designed by man to become what it has become.


What does this statement mean? What characteristics of culture is
this?

In order to better understand culture, it is useful to closely examine


its characteristics and their ramifications. In this section of the
tutorial, you will learn about the specific advantages that culture
gives our species. You will also learn about culture's limitations
and shortcomings.

3. Make a reflection/reaction regarding the topic of module 2/week 2.

This topic is essential to us students because it helps us become the


better version of ourselves it makes us understand other people, it
also help us to understand how different societies organize
themselves politically and economically.
