Let’s Learn
LESSON 1: KNOWING ABOUT HUMAN CULTURAL AND
SOCIAL VARIATIONS
What is this lesson?
To start learning the lessons, you have to read and understand some important words.
A. Culture – refers to that complex whole which include knowledge, beliefs, arts, morals, laws, customs, and any
other capabilities and habits acquired by man as member of a society. (Edward H.Taylor)

Two types of Culture:

1. Material culture - composed of tangible things like food, tools, dress, accessories andothers.
2 .Non-material culture – composed of intangible things such as habits, ideas, religion,
language and behavior

Cultural Variation – refers to the differences in social behaviors that cultures exhibit around the world. In the
Philippines differences in social behaviors are influence with cultures in a specific places and tribes. So with
the different people in different countries they have also different norms and values that exists within their
groups.

Example of Cultural Variation in Dress Styles

Indonesia Philippines Thailand

Examples of Cultural Variation inDances

Philippines Malaysia
Comprehension Check!

What is cultural Variation? What are the two types of culture? Describe the culture in your country.

It alludes to the various social habits that people from various cultures display. In the Philippines, social
differences are influenced by the cultures of particular areas and tribes. As a result, just as people
differ among nations, so do the norms and values that exist inside their respective groupings. The two
types of culture are Material culture and Non-material culture. The traditional Filipino and Spanish
Catholic traditions are mixed with elements from other parts of Asia and America to create the culture
of the Philippines. Filipinos value their families, are frequently religious, and enjoy art, fashion, music,
and food. Filipinos enjoy having a good time and are friendly people. Together, people will frequently
sing, dance, and eat. The annual calendar is crammed with festivals, many of which combine costumes
and customs from the nation’s pre-Christian past with the Catholic beliefs and philosophy of modern
day.

Social Differences

Social Differences – refers to the situation where people are discriminated based on economic status, social characteristics
and qualities. These may include race, ethnicity, gender, and professions. In spite of these differences people continue to do their
responsibilities as members of society. These are the common social differences among people in the world;
 Gender – refers to the biological characteristics that distinguish a male from a female
 Gender Roles -refers to attitudes and behaviors that the society expect a person based on his/her sex
 Socio-economic class- the high income, the middle income and the low-income class
 Ethnicity-whichreferstotheethnicgroupwhohavecommonculture, language andhistory
 Race –which refers to the group of people who shared inherited physical characteristics such as skin color, facial
features and body structure

Social Change
Social change -refers to any significant alteration over time in behavior patterns and cultural values and norms. This change is
brought about by modernization and the impact of globalization that resulted to cultural change among Filipino people.

Example - Filipino way of courtship:

Traditional way of courtship Modern way of courtship

Political Identities

Political Identities - refers to political position based on the interests and perspective of social groups with which people
identify. In the Philippines, we participated in choosing the political leaders through election and being a democratic country. They are
mandated by law to lead the people and implement good governance for the common good of all Filipinos.

Comprehension Check!
What is Social Differences? What is Social Change? What is Political Identities?
-Social Differences alludes to a circumstance in which individuals are treated unfairly because of their
social standing, personal traits, or economic circumstances. Race, ethnicity, gender, and vocations are
a few examples. Despite these distinctions, individuals continue to fulfill their obligations as members
of society. These are the widespread social divisions that exist among all people. Social Change
describes any major shift in behavioural patterns, cultural standards, and values across time.
Modernization and the effects of globalization, which led to cultural shift among Filipinos, are to blame
for this change. Political Identities alludes to a political sta nce based on the objectives and viewpoints
of social organizations that individuals identify with. As a democratic nation, the Philippines took part in
the selection of its political leaders through elections. According to the legislation, they must guide the
populace and enact effective governance for the benefit of all Filipinos.

They have a round face and tan-brown to
dark brown skin. They are mostly short

responsible for their children's physical
features or structures, which is related to
gene transmission.
Indian They have various shades of brown skin,
silky straight black hair (mostly on
females), and big brown round eyes for
the most part. Indians have mostly round
to oval faces.
Korean Koreans have fair skin, smaller eyes, and
longer noses. They now have a slim waist

unrealistic because they are so strict.

Column A Column B

e. Race White

3. Explain the advantages and disadvantages brought about by modernization as part of social change.

ADVANTAGES: In terms of healthcare, technical advancement, and economic growth, modernization has
become essential to survival. Modernization improves not just business but also human life. It is
the cause of man's moon landing and his continued ability to expand his knowledge of the
cosmos. People are able to travel, communicate, and work together because to the plethora of
technology tools for improving the standard of living for everyone in global society. These
techniques of instruction and learning also have a tendency to increase our awareness of our
physical health and fitness. The knowledge of fundamental ways to stay healthy and fit during
an emergency is also less widespread in developing countries with limited access to educational
resources. Modern technology aids in lowering a company's cost and resource utilization from
the perspective of industrial advances. Industrial development increases production and income
with automated machinery.

DISADVANTAGES: Despite the many advantages that modernization brings to society, some issues have
negative effects on both people and the environment. Some significant problems that add to the
drawbacks of modernization are connected to risky reversals. States that have adopted
contemporary means of subsistence have reduced environmental pollution. However, the
society that is currently developing is still dependent on traditional fuel and resource sources.
Despite being aware of the impending environmental disaster, powerful nations don't guarantee
a long-term solution to such nations.
