Option 3:

Would you identify one more time what you want? (Write down what they want.)

 My daughter wants to get her haircut ASAP. She does not want to wait a
week; she wants her haircut this weekend.
 My wife wants to wait 1 week and 3 days to allow for her hair stylist to do our
daughter’s hair.

Let me take each one of the wants you’ve identified and ask you about them so
that I make sure I’m getting the full picture. (Gain their consent to proceed; then
explore each want).

 My daughter would like her haircut as soon as it can be scheduled, and she
does not care who cuts her hair.
 My wife would like for our daughter to wait for her hair stylist, even though
she needs to be booked 1.5 weeks in advance.

What will be true after you get what you “want” that isn’t true now?

 My daughter is wanting to get a dramatically different haircut than she has

ever received. She would like for it to be done ASAP giving her time before
school starts up again in the fall. This would give her hair time to grow back
to a longer length before fall, and she feels every day that goes by is another
day it could be growing out.
 My wife wants our daughter to wait approximately 1.5 weeks for her hair
stylist to give her a haircut citing that 1.5 week will not be that much growth
for hair.

Continue to ask the “Critical Question”

 My daughter is afraid the haircut, being shorter than she is used to, will not
fit her face and she may not like it on her. What she is really concerned
about, is going to school with a haircut that she is embarrassed about. If she
gets it now, it can grow out and possible be re-styled with something familiar
before school starts. She ultimately does not want to be seen with a haircut
she would not feel confident with.
 My wife is afraid that if she takes our daughter somewhere else, they may
mess up her hair. There are two instances that other cosmetologists had not
done what was asked. She then had to take our daughter to her hair stylist
to get her hair fixed and in doing so had to cut her hair a little shorter.

After hearing what my wife was concerned about, my daughter could see why she
would be concerned. She had thought about this and told my wife that is why she wants
it done ASAP, because since she is not in school, she would not want it fixed. I also
suggested to call a friend that I had graduated high school with many people had said
she was a great stylist. She also holds a license to teach cosmetology, so maybe that
would put my wife’s mind at ease. They both agreed to at least try to get an appoint with
my friend from high school and not getting her hair fixed if she does not like it till
beginning of August.
