What is a smartphone?

A smartphone is a mobile phone or cell phone that runs a mobile operating system

(OS) and functions as a mini-computer. Smartphones also function as portable media

players, digital cameras, camcorders and GPS navigation devices. The OS equips the

device with advanced computing capabilities, runs applications and enables the device to

perform the following basic functions:

• Access Web pages and browse the Web using 4G and 3G data networks and

Wi-Fi support, along with mobile broadband, near field communication and

Bluetooth. Send emails and synchronize with multiple email accounts.

Why do I need a smartphone?

Most people would agree that they couldn't survive an hour of the day without their

smartphone, but realistically, a smartphone is not an essential element of living like water,

food and sunlight. Your life can still be managed healthily and happily without a

smartphone; however, a mobile device can variably and significantly enhance your life

(and keep it digitally relevant)(Pérez, 2014).

Our digitally dependent society relies on smartphones to communicate and stay in

touch. Unlike a regular phone, a smartphone keeps users connected through messaging

services, email, video calling and social networking applications, in addition to standard
text messaging and phone calls. A smartphone functions like a laptop for accessing and

browsing the Web. Keep up to date on the latest news and shop online, for example,

directly from your smartphone, anywhere, anytime(Figueroa Portilla, 2016).

What is the difference between a regular phone and a smartphone?

The usual phones were referred to as "dumb phones", which are usual phones that do

not remain equipped with a touch screen, high-speed data networks or Wi-Fi, or a mobile

operating system (OS). Additionally known as low-end, low- to mid-range cell phones,

several usual phones still have the ability to enter the Web and save song to play,

exemplifying, a smart phone is a cell phone compatible with a mobile operating system

with advanced computing functionalities. A smart phone is created to have a high -

resolution touch screen and a sophisticated client interface. With a single touch or swipe

on the touch screen, you can access the Web, display Web pages, e-mail correspondence,

watch tapes, play songs, take photos, shoot video clips, video clip messages, edit

documents, and keep in touch socially(Organista-Sandoval et al., 2013).

You can also enhance a smartphone's capabilities with apps. Smartphones often come

equipped with built-in apps, including an address book, calendar and weather. Millions

of apps are also available for download that can keep you informed about current events

help you manage your business, monitor your finances and plan your vacation(Organista-

Sandoval et al., 2013).

,
What are the main features of a smartphone?

The first distinguishing feature of a smartphone from other cell phones is its mobile

operating system (OS), such as Google's Android and Apple's iOS. Along with the

operating system, a smartphone commonly has a connection to the high-speed Internet

and an embedded browser to display web pages(Pérez, 2014).

A smartphone also functions as a portable digital media player to create and play

music playlists and upload photos and videos in a single interface. Use a smartphone as a

camera, video recorder and voice recorder to take photos, videos and audible notes with

a single touch or swipe of the touch screen. You can send them to friends and family and

share them on social networking sites(Figueroa Portilla, 2016).

Users have the ability to customize smartphones by downloading apps, which are one

of the most fun and superior properties of using a smartphone. From staying up to date

on the latest news and tracking finances to gaming and managing a business, apps have

the ability to enable the functionality of your smartphone to do seemingly

anything(Figueroa Portilla, 2016).
