Seatwork #1: Issue in STS-picture Interpretation

1. What is the issue or problem depicted in the photograph?

- The issue that I think was too much usage of mobile phone and addiction to social media.
According to the experts, it takes about 21 days to break or form a habit. Hence, a longer
and daily usage of mobile phone might form a new habit to us which make it difficult to
remove or change.
-
2. How does this particular issue or problem impact them well-being of human today?
- Health issues like insomnia which staying awake until late night. Radiation from gadgets
could also cause the production of our sleep hormone melatonin which makes it difficult to
sleep easily. Have you experienced that your parents told you that too much gadget could
make you somehow, brainless or stupid? In fact, yes it is true because according to research
studies, too much exposure to multiple screens could change the structure of our brain
leading to low cognitive function. Computer vision syndrome, experiencing blurred vision,
redness and eye strain. However this is not a permanent syndrome, but still we can protect
our eyes by using anti-glare glasses.

This might be cause of road accidents, like driving with your phone or crossing the road
while speaking over the phone, or maybe walking the street while using your mobile phone
just like in the picture. According to a study published in the Journal of Community Health,
around 21,760 pedestrians at five busy intersections in Manhattan, almost half of the
people crossing the road were wearing headphones, looking into their electronic devices
and talking on the phone.

Lastly, brain cancer, it is shown in a study that the you more you spend on your phone could
increase the risk of glioma or cancer of the brain which could be a brain tumors, benign
brain tumors and parotid gland tumors.

Mañana habit, this is popular to us, particularly students. We tend to say “mamaya na”
especially to school works until, unconsciously, we forget and all of our task get piled up
which makes it difficult to meet the deadlines.

3. Why is it important for people to study and learn about STS as an academic field, especially in
addressing the issue or problem depicted in the photographs?
- First, help us understand the relationship between the sciences, technology and society, its
history, and importance to us. This can be our foundation and background when trying to
formulate new inventions or study that could help the future students. And this subject
addresses the different reality issues, or negative impacts of science, technology and
society. Lastly, help us to be innovative, analytical and have creative thinking in facing
different phenomenal problems
