My name is Karen and I’m a firefighter. When I was little, I really admired firefighters because they’re very
brave. So as soon as I left school, I decided to join the fire service because I wanted to help people. The
training was tough but it was fun and interesting too. My mum and dad were very proud of me when I passed
my training. But, in this job, you have to take training courses all the time, to make sure you know how to
deal with every possible situation. It’s important because, as a firefighter, you are responsible for the lives of
other people.
You need courage to be a firefighter but you must also always remember that you are part of a team and that
you must never do anything that would be dangerous for another firefighter. You must never play the hero
and you must never forget that you work with other people, not alone.
We work eight-hour shifts and sometimes I have to stay at the station all night. If I’m lucky, I get some sleep
but if the alarm goes we have to get to the scene of the fire as quickly as possible.
My job is very rewarding but difficult. It’s great when we save people’s lives but very sad when people get
hurt.
