Visual Information, entails the use of visual media in the form of photographs, motion pictures, video recordings, graphic arts, visual aids, and other displays that use pictorial representations.

Manipulating is an act of controlling or moving something by using the hands.

I. IMAGE AND DESIGN CONCEPTS

Manipulating Text, Graphics, and Images to Create Information and Communications Technology Content intended for an Online Environment.

Image is a representation of the external form of a person or thing in art.

Images may be 2-dimensional, such as a photograph or screen display, or 3-dimensional, such as a statue or hologram.
They may be captured by optical devices – such as cameras, mirrors, lenses, telescopes, microscopes, etc. and natural objects and phenomena, such as the human eye or water.
Pictures that depict some real-world situations typically captured by a camera. Also called as raster images.
Graphics are visual images or designs on some surface, such as a wall, canvas, screen, paper, or stone to inform, illustrate, or entertain.
Examples of Graphics: photographs, drawings, line art, graphs, diagrams, etc.

Layout is part of graphic design that deals in the arrangement of visual elements on a page.

II . BASIC PRINCIPLES OF GRAPHICS AND LAYOUT

1. Balance – the visual weight of objects, texture, colors, and space is evenly distributed on the screen.
https://usl-tuguegarao.neolms.com/student_lesson/show/2730068?lesson_id=12417341&section_id=48935891 9/29/21, 8:13 AM
Page 2 of 11

https://i.pinimg.com/originals/3d/09/e9/3d09e9bafecd8e87d5c4e41cdae4d13a.jpg

Symmetrical balance occurs when equal weights are on equal sides of a composition. A wedding invitation is a good example of a composition that you’d likely want to be symmetrically
balanced.
Asymmetrical balance results from the unequal visual weight on each side of the composition. Asymmetrical balance is more dynamic and interesting. It evokes feelings of modernism,
movement, energy, and vitality.
Radial balance occurs when elements radiate from a common center. Rays of sunlight and ripples in a pond after a stone is tossed in are examples of radial balance.
2. Emphasis – used to make certain points of the artwork stand out. It creates the center of interest or focal point. The basic design principle of emphasis is used to either make certain elements of
a design stand out (such as through using contrasting colors, making an element larger, increasing the white space around it, etc.) or not stand out (like when including tiny “fine print” at the bottom
of a page). An area in the design that any appears different in size, texture, shape, or color to attract the viewer’s attention.

https://i.pinimg.com/originals/1e/96/77/1e9677f6e7b2b88b7f74247b27b1d69b.jpg

3. Movement – how the eye moves through the composition; leading the attention of the viewers from one aspect to another. Movement is the path the viewer's eye takes through the work of art,
often to focal areas. Such movement can be directed along lines, edges, shape, and color within the work of art.

https://micahsdesignblog.files.wordpress.com/2013/11/movement_dramatic.jpg

4. Pattern, Repetition, and Rhythm – these are the repeating visual element on an image or layout to create unity in the layout or image. Rhythm is achieved when visual elements create a sense
of organized movement. Repetition refers to one object or shapes repeated; Pattern is a combination of elements or shapes repeated in a recurring and regular arrangement; Rhythm is a
combination of elements repeated, but with variations.

5. Proportion – visual elements create a sense of unity where they relate well with one another. Proportion is the relationship of two or more elements in a design and how they compare with one
another. Proportion is said to be harmonious when a correct relationship exists between the elements concerning size or quantity. A good proportion adds harmony, symmetry, or balance among the
parts of a design. Visual elements create a sense of unity when they relate well with one another. Below is an example of a website following the proportion element f a layout.
https://visscom.files.wordpress.com/2013/04/principles_of_design_contrast_by_akumadorobo-d4ifqa0.jpg

6. Variety – this uses several design elements to draw a viewer's attention. The elements, or principles, of visual design, include Contrast, Balance, Emphasis, Movement, White Space,
Proportion, Hierarchy, Repetition, Rhythm, Pattern, Unity, and Variety. These principles of design work together to create something that is aesthetically pleasing and optimizes the user
experience.

III. INFOGRAPHICS

Information Graphics
Used to represent information, statistical data, or knowledge in a graphical manner usually done in a creative way to attract the viewer’s attention.
Visual presentations of information that use the element of design to display content.
Express complex messages to viewers in a way that enhances their comprehension.
Basically, using pictures, objects, and images in a way for the viewers to easily understand the message of a topic.

Reasons to use Infographics:

To communicate a message
To present in a way that is compact and easy to comprehend.
To analyze data in order to discover cause-and-effect relationships.
To periodically monitor the route of certain parameters.

Applying Different Principles in Creating an Infographics

1. Unity – the states of being united or joined as a whole.

2. Space – a continuous area or expanse which is free, available, or unoccupied.
3. Hierarchy – a system or organization in which people or groups are ranked one above the other according to status or authority.
4. Balance – an even distribution of weight enabling someone or something to remain upright and steady.
5. Contrast – the state of being strikingly different from something else in juxtaposition or close association.
https://usl-tuguegarao.neolms.com/student_lesson/show/2730068?lesson_id=12417341&section_id=48935891 9/29/21, 8:13 AM
6. Scale – an instrument for weighing. Scales were originally simple balances (pairs of scales) but are now usually devices with an internal
Pageweighing
4 of 11 mechanism housed under a platform on which
the thing to be weighed is placed, with a gauge or electronic display showing the weight.
7. Dominance – power and influence over others.

Elements of Infographics

1. Visual Elements – which includes color coding, graphics, and reference icons.
2. Content Elements – which includes time frames, statistics and references.
3. Knowledge Elements – which only consists of facts.

Tips in creating an Infographics:

Simplicity Rocks. Keep the infographic simple so it won’t be an eyesore to the viewers
Nothing takes effect without a cause. This just means that you need to show the viewers the cause of the topic before discussing the effect of said topic.
Draw your Boundaries. Just don’t overdo the pictures or images or it will look like a collage that looks like vomit.
Think in Color. Match the colors in your infographic like making the text in white in a dark background and vice versa.
Layout is not just Typography.
Make it Appealing. Of course, make it look good so it would attract and keep the viewer’s attention.
Be Verifiable. And finally, the facts in the infographic should be verified and confirmed that the they are indeed true.

To further appreciate the use of Infographics, you may refer to the examples below.

IV. BASIC TECHNIQUES OF IMAGE MANIPULATION

1. Resizing

This technique allows you to make an image smaller or larger. However, keep in mind that making an image larger than its original size generally does not make the image look good.
Resizing is different from cropping – this is merely a change in size while retaining the frame of an image.

https://usl-tuguegarao.neolms.com/student_lesson/show/2730068?lesson_id=12417341&section_id=48935891 9/29/21, 8:13 AM

2. Color Adjustment

This technique allows you to adjust the colors in an image. For example, you may want to modify the color intensity or even change colors for artistic effect.
3. Brightness & Contrast

There will be times that some images may be too bright, while others may be too dull. There are various corrections that can make your images look dramatically better.

4. Combined Text and Photo

The way that you combine text and image (including shapes) in a slide affects the message you convey and the visual appeal of the material. Combining texts with images or photo makes a
cohesive design as text and image need to work in relationship with each other.

5.Cropping

If you want to remove parts of an image, you can crop it. You can think of cropping like using a pair of scissors to cut out the parts you no longer want.

V. ONLINE IMAGE FILE FORMATS Page 10 of 11

Digital Image

A digital image is a numeric representation, normally binary, of a two-dimensional image. Depending on whether the image resolution is fixed, it may be of vector or raster type.

Image File Formats

Image File Formats are standardized means of organizing and storing digital images. are composed of digital data in one of these formats that can be rasterized for use on a computer display
or printer.

1. JPEG Joint Photographic Experts Group

"With the extension names .jpg or .jpeg" JPEG files are images that have been compressed to store a lot of information in a small-size file. Most digital cameras store photos in JPEG format.
JPEG files are usually used for photographs on the web because they create a small file that is easily loaded on a web page and also looks good.

2. PNG Portable Network Graphics

"With the extension name .png" These are images that support transparency designed to work in online viewing applications like web browsers, icons, graphics, and logos.

3. GIF Graphics Interchange Format

"With the extension name .gif" These are images that support transparency provides image animation effects used for simple diagrams, shapes, and cartoon style images.
4. TIFF Tagged Image File Format

"With the extension name .tif" These images are the most common file type used in photo software (such as Photoshop), as well as page layout software (such as Quark and InDesign). It used
for large printing of images because it contains a lot of detailed image data.

It is very fascinating to know that the Online Environment is not just all about the User Interface and User Experience, but also for graphical designs. These Online platforms are used as
tools to develop ICT content. Line, where the two points are connected and this line is used to create rhythm. Shape is the intersection of lines that serves as the external outline of a form and shape
has height and weight. Texture is the look and feel of a surface. In two dimensioned forms, texture is essentially visual and adds richness and dimension to work. Space is the distance between
shapes and forms. It is the white or negative space referring to emptiness. Size is how big or small an object is. These objects are used to scale that referring to the process of making size
relationships. Value, it is the relativeness of light and dark of an idea or object.

These elements are all important, for they play their own specific role and they please certain types of viewers. Though not all viewers like a single type or element, then that’s the time the
other elements turn to shine. In fact, these elements are the ones used by the most popular websites of different fields and targeted users e.g., Google, Facebook, YouTube, Rappler, and many
more. In addition, there are also the so called infographics which are fun and interesting, just by knowing how you can deliver information in a graphical way. It might be in the form of animation or by
giving the viewers a test of logic by letting them find out the meaning within a graphic art.

What is an Online Platform?

The term “online platform” has been used to describe a range of services available
on the Internet including marketplaces, search engines, social media, creative content
outlets, app stores, communications services, payment systems, services comprising
the so-called “collaborative” economy.
Additionally, these are technologies that are grouped to be used as a base upon
which other applications processes or technologies are developed.
Online platforms support so many of the daily activities that we have become
dependent on them in our personal and professional lives.
We rely on them to buy and sell goods and services, to find information online, and to
keep in touch with each other. We use them for entertainment, news, transportation,
accommodation, finding jobs and employees, finding apps, and for many other
purposes.

To sum it up, an online platform is a base of technologies designed to run within an online environment and provides interactive online services to its different users.

COMMON ONLINE PLATFORMS

We have different Common Online Platforms that are widely used for different services.

Examples are Presentation/Visualization, Cloud Computing, Social Media, File Management, Mapping, Video Streaming, Digital Music and Podcasts, and On-Demand Service Platforms.

Now let's define them one by one so that we would know what are the uses and different services that these Online Platforms offer to their users.

1. Presentation Platforms

Allows you to present and share presentations, infographics, and videos with other people.
Use to communicate information clearly and efficiently via slides show, statistical graphics, plots, charts, and information graphics.

Here are the main factors to consider when looking for great presentation software:

Design library: It should offer many templates, images, and other media to create your presentation.
Features: Rather than just including standard slides, software should offer alternative formats to share presentation content and engage audiences.
Shareable: For easy collaboration, users should be able to share presentations with other users and allow simultaneous editing.
Simplicity: Most users aren’t design experts, so the software should be simple enough for any person to use, regardless of their background.
Cost: Find software that fits your budget so you can consistently create presentations.
Compatibility: Most people and organizations use multiple devices, choose software that’s compatible across devices in creating and presenting presentations.
https://usl-tuguegarao.neolms.com/student_lesson/show/2730068?lesson_id=12417341&section_id=49361898 9/29/21, 8:13 AM
Examples of Presentation Platforms: Page 2 of 13

a. Prezi

Is about as different from PowerPoint as you can get. Rather than offering a slide-by-slide presentation, it’s more of a visual and interactive mind map, wherein you interact with
different elements on a virtual canvas.

Convert your PowerPoint presentation slides into a dynamic user experience or create a brand-new “Prezi” from scratch.
All in all, Prezi is worth using for its features. The ability to show how ideas relate to one another using Prezi’s frames and zoom feature is far more engaging than PowerPoint’s
typical bullet-point slides.

b. Vyond
Across industries, video has been shown to grab attention and engage better than most media. Videos have been known to increase people’s understanding of a product or service
by drastic margins.
Vyond puts the power of video into the hands of everyone, everywhere. The platform provides anyone, no matter what their production skill level is, with the tools they need to
create powerful, dynamic media. With features that go beyond moving text and images, you can build character-driven stories or compelling data visualizations that engage
audiences and deliver results.

c. Zoho Show

As a PowerPoint alternative, Zoho Show is also a slide-creation platform, but with an interface that’s more basic, clean, and simple than PowerPoint’s.

https://usl-tuguegarao.neolms.com/student_lesson/show/2730068?lesson_id=12417341&section_id=49361898 9/29/21, 8:13 AM

Offering a free version, Zoho Show is perfect for any beginner with minimal design skills who needs to create a simple slide presentation but doesn’t want to pay for PowerPoint.
Zoho Show’s biggest advantage is its simplicity, potentially at no cost. If you’re a small team with little design experience, Zoho is a great alternative to PowerPoint.

d. Google Slides
Out of all the software options on this list, Google Slides is most like PowerPoint. It is formatted similarly and lets you upload and edit PowerPoint files on the platform.
There are a few key advantages that Google Slides has over PowerPoint, though: It’s free and online, so you can easily collaborate with just a browser.
Google Slides is like PowerPoint, but it’s still a strong–and free–alternative that allows users to collaborate through just a browser rather than requiring downloaded software.

e. Keynote

Just as PCs are often loaded with PowerPoint, Macs come with Keynote, Apple’s presentation software.

https://usl-tuguegarao.neolms.com/student_lesson/show/2730068?lesson_id=12417341&section_id=49361898 9/29/21, 8:13 AM

Like PowerPoint, Keynote is designed for creating slides, but it comes with the key advantages of visually stunning templates and a simple, clear interface.
If you’re an Apple user, Keynote is a strong alternative to PowerPoint, letting you engage audiences more with visuals than with endless bullet-pointing.

f. Haiku Deck

If you’re all about visuals, Haiku Deck is one of the most image-oriented presentation programs out there. It’s designed to create slides, just like PowerPoint, but the templates
encourage little text, so users can enjoy the stunning visuals in the background.
As a plus, Haiku Deck has an extensive library of free templates and images, so you don’t need much to start building a beautiful presentation.
If you’re trying to engage audiences more with visuals, and your presentation doesn’t need to load a ton of textual content, Haiku Deck may be the solution for you. By highlighting
stunning photographs and graphics, Haiku Deck presentations will quickly captivate your audience’s attention.

g. SlideDog

https://usl-tuguegarao.neolms.com/student_lesson/show/2730068?lesson_id=12417341&section_id=49361898 9/29/21, 8:13 AM

Sometimes, when giving a presentation, you need to show more than your PowerPoint—you also might need to display other files, like a video or a document.
Rather than having a clunky presentation where you keep switching to different formats, the software SlideDog allows you to gather all your files into a single presentation.
Assembling your media, SlideDog allows you to create a varied, dynamic presentation.
SlideDog is a bit limited by being only PC-friendly. For Windows users, though, it offers a unique opportunity to grab audiences’ attention with so many different media in a single
presentation.

h. CustomShow

For a sales presentation to a client, a PowerPoint looks a tad dull. You want the person to get excited about your business, but it’s tough to stir them up with the software’s generic,
bland design.
CustomShow is an enterprise presentation software that’s specifically geared toward sales and marketing teams.
It’s equipped with extensive editing tools to nail down every visual detail, so users can create a branded, professional look for their presentations.
For sales and marketing presentations, CustomShow is a notch above PowerPoint. With more customization features for branding and the ability to track presentations with clients,
CustomShow allows users to meet their sales-driven presentation goals better than PowerPoint’s more standard software.

2. Cloud Computing Platforms

Cloud Computing is an infrastructure and software system that allows for access to shared networks of storage, servers, and applications over the internet.
Cloud Computing processes data and is provided by a privately-owned cloud service or a third-party cloud provider.
Cloud Computing is the practice of using a network of remote servers hosted on the internet to store, manage, and process data, rather than a local server or a personal computer.

Examples of Cloud Computing Platforms
