GAINING INSIGHTS
1. Can you distinguish the difference between the various art traditions?

Yes, there were many differences between various ethnic traditions. For example,
traditional art refers to art that existed prior to the colonial era; this type of art depicts
the ancestors' cultural values, and indigenous materials such as bamboo, rattan, and
cogons were commonly used. While the Spanish colonial tradition mostly focuses on
secular or directly related to religious art forms, this is due to the fact that at the time,
it was the friars/priests that led every city, and their major goal was to propagate
Christianity throughout the country. Finally, the American colonial tradition is more
focused on modern art and encourages people to be creative and experiment with
many art forms, which leads to the contemporary art tradition that we practice today.

2. What is contemporary art?

Contemporary art is an art form that emerged in the 21st century; it is an

experimental and free art form. Rather than focusing solely on the appearance of their
art, most contemporary artists pour their hearts into creating works that address a
subject or communicate a message. This type of art form is likewise culturally based
and significantly affected by technology.
