TASK 1: Read the passage below and match each word/phrase in column A with the most
appropriate word/phrase in column B. (0.2 pt * 10 = 2 pts)

A. The word ecotourism is a combination of ecology (the study of systems of living things) and tourism.
The International Ecotourism Society defines ecotourism as “responsible travel to natural areas that
conserves the environment and improves the well-being of the local people.” This means that
walking through a rain forest is not really ecotourism unless it benefits the area, perhaps by providing
jobs to the local residents or by conserving the wildlife. Countries are slowly recognizing that it is
possible to make money while preserving their natural resources.

B. Unfortunately, people in the industry sometimes exploit the “ecotourism” label in their drive for
profit. This band of ecotourism is not always conducted in the most reasonable way and may damage
the very environment it seeks to protect. One concern is that the overwhelming number of visitors to
these natural places (especially in the high season) has a negative effect on the ecosystem.
Ecotourists tend to seek out places with the rarest animals and plants; even if they take care not to
disturb the environment, their presence could not pressure on the most frail of living things. Another
problem is the interaction between animals and humans. At one national park in Costa Rica, wild
monkeys feed on garbage left by the visitors and even aggressively steal food from tourists.

C. While tourists can have a negative impact on ecosystems, the same areas might have been totally
destroyed by industries such as farming, logging, or mining if the ecotourism industry did not exist.
Tour guides can also be educators who train people to love and care for the environment. By visiting
these beautiful rain forests and seeing rare animals, visitors get a sense of their value and will
hopefully take these lessons back with them to their home countries.

D. It is easy to be critical of the ecotourism industry, but it is important to be positive as well.

Ecotourism can never be “pure” – we cannot expect zero negative effects on the ecosystem. It is also
unrealistic to think that humans will not go anywhere accessible to them. If protection efforts are
maintained and intensified, those remaining places of undisturbed nature may be stressed, but at least
they will not be destroyed.

TASK 3: Read the passage below and decide if the following statements about the reading are True
or False (0.3 pt * 10 = 3 pts).

A. There are more than 37,000 known species of spiders in the world in a wide variety of shapes and
sizes. The largest spiders in the world live in the rain forests of South America and are known by the
people who live there as the “bird-eating spiders.” These spiders can grow up to 28 centimeters in
length - about the size of a dinner plate, and, as their name suggests, have been known to eat small
birds. In comparison, the smallest species of spider in the world is native to Western Samoa. These
tiny spiders are less than half a millimeter long - about the size of a period on this page - and live in
plants that grow on mountain rocks.

B. Some people like to keep spiders as pets, particularly tarantulas, which are native to North America
and can live for up to twenty-five years. Most people, on the other hand, do not like touching spiders,
and a significant number of people are afraid of them mainly because of their poison. However,
despite their bad reputation, only thirty of the 37,000 known species of spiders are deadly to humans.
Spiders actually provide benefits to humans by catching and eating harmful insects such as flies and
mosquitoes.

C. The main thing that makes spiders different from other animals is that they spin webs to catch the
small insects they feed on. The unique silk of a spider’s web is produced by special organs found in
the lower part of the spider’s body. It is light, elastic, and strong. Additionally, it is completely
biodegradable. This means that the web will completely decompose and eventually return to nature
over time - making it perfect for uses such as making fishing nets. Some people have tried to raise

spiders commercially in order to collect the silk these spiders produce, but no one has ever really
managed to make a go of it. The main reason why these businesses never stand a chance is because
it takes 670,000 spiders to produce half a kilogram of silk, and all of these spiders need living insects
for their food.

1. As stated in paragraph A, spiders in the world are of different shapes and sizes.

2. According to paragraph A, the largest spiders in the world can eat the other creatures.

3. It is mentioned in paragraph A that the smallest spiders are found in Western Samoa’s mountainous
areas.

4. Paragraph B implies that tarantulas are known for their longevity.

5. As mentioned in paragraph B, many people think that spiders are poisonous.

6. It is stated in paragraph B that around one-tenth of spiders worldwide can kill people.

7. The word “It” in paragraph C refers to “the spider’s body.”

8. It can be inferred from paragraph C that spider webs can be very useful.

9. In stating that “no one has ever really managed to make a go of it,” in paragraph C, the author
means that few people have made profits from raising spiders.

10. The passage is mainly about how spider webs are made.

TASK 4: Read the passage below and choose the best answer to each question (0.35 pt * 10 = 3.5
pts).

A. Heidemarie Schewermer, a 63-year-old German woman, has lived without money for the last ten
years. At the age of 54, Heidemarie quit her job as a psychotherapist, gave away all her money and her
flat, and threw away her credit cards. Today, apart from a few clothes (three sweaters, two skirts, two
pairs of shoes, and a coat) and a few personal belongings, she does not own anything.

B. It all began as a one-year experiment. In her home city of Dortmund she set up a “swapping circle”
where people swap services without using money, for example, a haircut for a mathematics class. To
prove that this could work, she decided to give up using money for a year. However, when the year
ended, she continued and has not used money since then.

C. At first, she house-sat for friends who were on holiday. She stayed in their houses in return for
watering the plants and looking after their animals. At the moment she is staying in a student residence
where she can sleep, have a shower, or use a computer in return for cooking for the young people who
live there. She also “works” as a psychotherapist. “Before I treated very wealthy people, but now I help
anyone who turns up. Sometimes they give me something in return, but not always.” Heidemarie says, “I
can live thanks to my contacts. A lot of people who know me understand what I’m doing and want to help
me. When I need a bus ticket, for example, or a new tube of toothpaste I think, ‘Who can I ask? What can
I give them in return?’ If I want to go to the cinema, I might offer to look after somebody’s children for
the afternoon.”
