With the release of Oil Wars we here at NDNG want to bring you a nation that would fit in with the
Iranians, Iraqis and Israelis which are featured in the new release. The Turkish Army list was brought to
us by Andy Thompson and we cannot thank him enough for his hard work.
Turkey occupies a unique place in both location and history. The nation straddles both Europe and the
Middle East and Turkey’s history plays into the story of both continents. After its neutrality during the
Second World War Turkey started to align itself more with the west and joined NATO in 1952. During
the Cold War Turkey was one of two NATO nations that shared a border with the USSR and its place as
the southern and easternmost flank of NATO was important for many strategic reasons. One should also
not forget that Turkey shares a border with other hot spots of the 1980s, such as Iran, Iraq, and Syria
and was one of the few regional nations that shared a good relationship to Israel.
The Turk Ordusu (Turkish Army) in the mid-1980’s was a force made up of conscript soldiers with a
professional officer corps that were equipped and trained based on NATO standards. By the end of the
Cold War the Turk Ordusu was made up of 525,000 active duty personnel with an additional 950,000 in
reserve status. The Turkish armed forces were split into four field armies with each being assigned to a
geographic region.
Each Turkish Tugay (Brigade) was splint into a few Alay (Regiments) that were either armored,
mechanized infantry or leg infantry. The Armored Alay has two tank Tabur (Battalions) with one
mechanized Tabur while the Mechanized Tabur had two mechanized Tabur with one tank Tabur.
Modern equipment was always an issue with some of the Turkish units and some units were equipped
with tanks and personnel carriers dating from the 1940’s. The top line Turkish units were equipped with
modern Leopard 1A3 and M48A1/2 main battle tanks along with M-113 APCs.
During the 1980’s the Turkish army was embroiled in an internal conflict against the Kurds that still goes
on to today. This makes some of the better equipped units to have combat seasoned personnel who
have experience in fighting the Kurdish PKK.
During the 1980’s the average Turkish male had to serve at least 12 months in the armed forces and
those who avoided service were punished by law. Furthermore a Turkish reservist could be called back
to uniform until he reached the age of 41. Very few deferments were available and the majority of
Turkish males had some connection to military service. The daily life of the conscript was hard and many
of these soldiers were led by motivated and well trained Non-Commissioned Officers and Commissioned
Officers, whose orders were never to be questioned by the conscripts (much like every other
conscripted army). This is why they have a better Counterattack rating than other NATO armies but they
have a higher rally number due to the harsh discipline they endured.
The core units of the 3rd Mechanized Division are tank, mechanized infantry and armored cavalry
companies along with the support units found in a NATO division. You can field ether Leopard 1A3 or
M48A5 tanks for your armored companies. The standard mechanized company is equipped with M-113
carriers and each platoon can field a Milan ATGM to deal with enemy tanks and is supported by a GPMG
team. The Armored Cavalry Company consists of M-113 mounted light infantry that lack the Milan and
GPMG teams. Anti-tank support is provided by both M-150 TOW missile vehicles and jeeps that mount
M106 recoilless rifles. The Cavalry Company can also take the older M41 Walker Bulldog tank which
does have the Spearhead special rule.
The 3 Mechanized has good support with M108 artillery and a mix of heavy and medium mortars to
support your force. For defense against aircraft you can use the venerable M42 Duster and M-113
mounted Redeye SAM teams.
For airpower you can call on US A-10 and Cobra attack helicopters from Incirlik Airbase in Eastern
Turkey.
You can also take any NATO formation except for a Greek unit which Andy is also writing for you.
Oil Wars
Any look at map shows you that anytime during the 1980’s the Turkish army could have been in battle
against the USSR, Iran or Iraq. This makes the new forces in Oil Wars a perfect opponent for your Turkish
army. During this period the Turks did have good relations with Israel and a fight where the Turks and
Israeli’s fight together against the Iraqis or Syrians in the Levant is a big what-if battle I would love to
play.
In most cases finding the right models to field a Turkish army couldn’t be simpler as most of their
equipment was either American or in a few cases German in origin. See the table below for which
Battlefront products to use.
The only slightly difficult thing is the infantry, Battlefront does not currently make any infantry that are a
direct match for Turkish Infantry.
Turkish Infantry during this period were equipped with (and for the most part still are) the G3 rifle, MG3
Light Machine gun, M72 LAW Portable anti-tank rocket and the Milan Missile launcher. They also wore
the American M1 helmet.
The closest match is the West German infantry, but you will need to break out the snips and files and
make some changes.
The first thing to note is that Turkish Infantry platoons are a lot bigger than the West German ones so it
will take a few packs to make one Turkish Platoon. You will also have a few bits left over when you have
finished – good for making objectives with or for putting towards another Turkish Platoon (or if you
know any West German players they might be happy to take any spare Milan teams off you).
A full Turkish platoon is nine G3 rifle teams with M72 LAW launchers, one GPMG team and one Milan
team
The Milan team is easy enough, just build it as you would for the West Germans with one Milan launcher
and an assistant on a small base.
For the GPMG team just mount three MG3 figures on a medium base with a couple of assistants – or use
the GPMG from the Canadian Mechanized Platoon (TCA702).
Now for the G3/LAW teams. The first team is the command team so three figures on a small base. For
the other eight (or six if you’re doing a smaller platoon) you need four G3 or LAW armed figures on a
medium base. They West Germans use the Panzerfauste 44 instead of the LAW, the most notable
feature of the Panzerfauste 44 is the warhead sticking out of the end of the barrel if you carefully snip
this off just past the front hand. This is not ideal but from a distance and with the right paint job it
should look okay. You could also remove the site off Panzerfauste as well.
The other thing to change is the helmets, the West German helmet is modeled with camouflage netting
(it’s all bumpy) whereas the Turkish usually just wore a printed camouflage cover (its smooth). So you
will need to carefully file the West German helmets smooth.
Rather than using West German Infantry you could instead use Canadian infantry they come with M72
LAWS and smooth helmets. However they use the C2 rifle which you might be able to hide with the right
paint job and you would still need to buy the West German Milan teams.
Painting your Turkish Force
Turkish Tanks could use an irregular camouflage pattern of Dark Green, Dirty Tan and Medium Brown.
An easy way to describe this is to use the NATO Camo guide found in Leopard and substitute the Dirty
Tan for the Black Grey and use a lighter shade of brown vice the color recommended in books like
Leopard.
You can also paint them in Olive Green and you can use the directions found in Free Nations for
Canadian Tanks.
Vehicles are can also use the Olive Green colors found on Canadian Tanks from Free Nations or the non
camo paint scheme listed in Leopard.
Infantry
Uniform Olive Drab, Camo pattern helmet. Recommend using the instructions given for Canadian
Infantry in the Free Nations Book.
