Objective

I am looking forward for a challenging project in the form of a summer internship (during the period
May-July 2005), where I can exercise my engineering and interpersonal skills and that gives me an
opportunity to learn new things and explore future career possibilities.
Educational Qualifications

May 2006: Expected Bachelor of Technology in Department of Materials and Metallurgical

Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, India.
March 2000: Earned All India Senior School Certificate with a percentage of 92.6% from the I.S.C
Board from La Martiniere College, Lucknow.
March 1998: Earned All India Secondary School Certificate with a percentage of 90.4% from the
I.C.S.E Board from La Martiniere College, Lucknow.
Research Interests

Materials processing and characterization, Powder Metallurgy, Liquid phase and solid state
sintering, structure-property correlation, alloy design and nanocrystalline materials.
Projects Undertaken

1) Investigated the effect of Yttria Alumina Garnet Addition on sintered P/M 316L and 434L
Stainless Steel under the guidance of Dr.A.Upadhyaya (I.I.T.Kanpur).
Stainless steels produced by powder metallurgical processing are widely used for automotive
applications. P/M stainless steels consolidated through solid-state sintering contain porosity. The oxide
and carbide dispersion that is done to enhance the wear-resistance further reduces densification during
sintering and degrades both the mechanical properties and wear-resistance. This study aimed at
enhancing the sinterability of oxide dispersed stainless steel composites by supersolidus sintering and
composition modification through alloying additives.
2) Investigated the effect of sintering temperature on the Pore Size Morphology in the Fe-2Cu-
0.9C alloys under the guidance of Dr. A. Upadhyaya (I.I.T.Kanpur).
Pores are an intrinsic property of all the conventional sintered powder metallurgy products and play an
important role in defining the mechanical properties of materials. Microstructural defects, especially,
porosity with irregular morphology acts as a stress concentrator. This study was implemented to
determine how different sintering temperatures influence the pore morphology. Different stereological
parameters were determined through image analysis to quantify the morphological change with
temperature.
3) Worked on a project for Crompton Greaves Ltd that required the study and analysis of the
Chromium-Copper alloys used in Vaccum Interrupters, under Dr. A. Upadhyaya (I.I.T.Kanpur).
Crompton Greaves Ltd. has an established technology for processing of Cr-Cu contact; however, it is
proposed to reduce the failure probability of the contacts during high voltage operation (through
sparking/arc damage). The Aim of this project was to Design and Study the properties of Cr-Cu alloy
such that it may become suitable for use in High Voltage Vaccum interruptors that were being
employed by the company.

1
Lab Experience

 Familiar with all aspects of powder processing including powder synthesis, powder
characterization, die-compaction and sintering. Experience with the powder metallurgy
processing of metal & ceramic. Have hands-on experience on experiments of liquid phase
sintering and supersolidus sintering and microstructural quantification and its correlation
with the mechanical properties.
 Well versed with all material characterization tools: Scanning Electron Microscope, image
analyzer, hardness tester (bulk as well as micro-hardness).
 Presently doing a lab course on “MME330: Phase Transformation and Microstructures”.
The lab provides good skills for sample preparation and study of various metals and alloys.
 Also doing a lab course on “MME310: Mechanical Properties of Materials”. The lab
involves testing of different materials for Mechanical Properties, (fatigue, creep, hardness,
strength etc.).
 Did a lab course on “TA 201:Manufacturing Processes”, the lab provided an enriching hand
on experience with different types of moldings, welding, casting, forging and also the
experience of doing jobs on lathe, milling, and drilling machines.

1) “Microstructure and Mechanical property of evolution of Sinter Hardening of Ferrous

alloy 737SH by M.Das, A.K.Jain, A.Dutt, V.Tripathi, A.Upadhyaya” , to be presented in
PM2TEC2005, Montreal, Canada and subsequently published in the proceedings Advances in
Powder Metallurgy & Particulate Material 2005
2) “Pore Evolution of Ferrous alloys by M.Das, A.K.Jain, A.Dutt, A.Upadhyaya”, to be
submitted in November 2004 to International Journal of Powder Metallurgy.
3) “Pore Evolution during Sintering of Fe-2Cu-0.9C Alloys,” has been accepted for
conference Presentation at the Annual Technical Meeting of The Indian Institute of Metals (IIM)
