1. What is the importance of studying culture especially in Mindanao?


Its intrinsic value, culture provides important social and economic benefits. With improved
learning and health, increased tolerance, and opportunities to come together with others,
culture enhances our quality of life and increases overall well-being for both individuals and
communities.
In Mindanao it is a cultural tapestry, it is home to 18 Lumad tribes, 13 ethnic-linguistic Moro
tribes and 64 settler groups who have lived in the island for over a century already. People
in Mindanao with diverse ethnic background and cultural differences.
Peace would be achieved if people were able to experience and maintain their wholeness
as human beings. Peace is felt if human dignity is preserved.
Mindanao is the 2nd largest major island in the Philippines. It is located in the southernmost
end of the archipelago. Mindanao has 5 major peninsulas and five major mountain ranges,
some volcanic origin. There abundance of mineral resources such as iron, nickle, cooper,
silver, gold, coal and limestone yet it is the source of major agricultural resources in the
Philippines.
In Mindanao they must study the culture where it started and also the bridging cultural gaps.
2. In your own perspective, what is culture?
Culture is the characteristics, knowledge, behavior of particular group of people where in it
seen the growth of a group identity by social patterns and unique to the groups.
