Abstract

In this paper, formal outline has been presented on the provided thesis 3: Corporal punishment

should be used in K-12 schools. The outline consists of three main points that are: pros of

corporal punishment, cons of corporal punishment in K-12 schools and the use of corporal

punishment in the context of Nepal. It presents how both the parties that argue for and against the

corporal punishment have put forward strong reasons for their side in the argument. Also, some

information from credible resources is included in the outline to support the mentioned three

main points. After the outline, there is an introduction stating the thesis statement and the

identified three points for the body paragraphs.

Outline

Thesis statement: People who state arguments for and against the use of corporal punishment in

K-12 schools have their own solid statements for it.

I. Pros of corporal punishment.

A. Corporal punishment is taken as a suitable option to bring some students on track when

used in tolerable manner.

B. It makes the students behave properly and be accountable for their actions.

C. Use of corporal punishment makes student be in discipline in the school premises.

D. Students tend to choose corporal punishment over detention and additional work from

school.

II. Cons of corporal punishment.

A. Some students become aggressive and violent as a result of corporal punishment.

1. It makes them to think that issues between two or more people can be solved

through fights.

2. They are more likely to hit and bully other students.

B. It is seen that in some students corporal punishment causes decrease in their ability to

grasp knowledge.

C. Punishments often dishearten the students rather than motive.

D. Students are left with long-lasting physical and mental health issues such as:

depression, anxiety and substance abuse when they are punished harshly.

III. Situation of corporal punishment in Nepal.

A. A study, “Adopting the Rights of the Child: A study on inter country adoption and its

influence on child protection in Nepal”, done in 71 child centers’ of Nepal showed

that parents usually punish their children by isolating them, making them do

household activity and hitting them with an object.

B. Most of the parents and teachers are not aware about the psychological impacts

caused by severe punishments on a child and the alternatives for corporal punishment.

C. The students are either penalized for their misbehavior or physically punished in the

schools of Nepal.

D. Another research done by ‘Centre for Victims of Torture’, in collaboration with

UNICEF showed that corporal punishment in public and private schools of Nepal are

common.

Introduction:

People who state arguments for and against the use of corporal punishment in K-12 schools have

their own solid statements for it. They present strong pros and cons for their side in the argument

that has made this matter a controversial topic for a long time now. One half of the people claim

that corporal punishment helps to keep students in discipline and the other half argue that it ruins

their mental and physical health. If we observe both of these claims closely then it looks like they

both are right. This debatable topic has lead some countries to ban corporal punishments in K-12

schools, whereas some countries still allows it but in moderation. In the context of Nepal,

corporal punishment is ordinary in K-12 schools. Students were harshly punished in the past but

nowadays the schools have been told to use corporal punishment in moderation by the governing

body.
